Good single player fighting games?

I’d have to agree with others and say that Virtua Fighter (Evo or 5) has a fun quest mode that keeps you playing the game for a really long time. Besides, Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution should be a part of any fighting game enthusiast’s collection.

Damn you Sega, I want to play VF5R =(

I’d have to say SC4 probably has the most “thorough” create mode for a decent FG.

Having several character profiles maxed out/fully completed takes a ton of time in that game. Unlockables are insane, and the AI can get pretty challenging sometimes.

:lovin: I wish I could rep you for this. Fire Pro D has a decent story mode, and FPR has Management of the Ring, where you run a promotion. That and it’s probably one of the most deep and customizable wrestling game on the market.

If you want a traditional fighter: GGXXAC+ US has a revamped story mode and some fun stuff, as does BlazBlue and SCIV. VF4EVO Quest mode is a good choice, and scrubbing out in MvC2 is fun even if you have nobody else to play with.

Lies. My dusty Dreamcast pads due to not playing anyone over the summer are proof of this!

I just want to say that is pretty cool to see some VF love here on SRK.

I have played many, MANY hours of Guilty Gear vs the cpu and it’s still pretty fun. It will never be as good as a real opponent though, obviously.

Soul Calibur III is basically made for the single player experience AND it has a great Create A Soul mode, but you have to buy/unlock a lot of the gear.

Still there’s Chronicles of The Sword which is an RTS/Warcraft type game, the Challenges, Tales Of Souls which is single player story mode, and straight up arcade mode as well. There’s quite a bit to do just by yourself and you can find the game for a decent price usually.

sorry for not being on topic but i’m curious as to how VF5 online netcode is.

VF5’s netcode is some of the best I’ve ever seen in a commercial product. I haven’t played in over a year, but the only time I remember it seriously hiccuping on me was during some USA-Japan matches. Every match I played against other Americans was fine. I’m not sure how active it is though. I figure that it might be difficult to actually find some games by now.

Virtual On Oratorio Tangram for the 360 (developed by the same team) has netcode that seems to be even better. Considering that 99% of that game’s playerbase is Japanese, good netcode is a godsend. I wouldn’t have played 1500+ matches without it. Seriously the best netplay experience I’ve had outside of GGPO.

Sega AM2 has netcode down pretty well. Not sure how it works but there doesn’t seem to be any significant input lag, and the game runs at constant full speed unless you and your opponent have a particularly poor connection (only happens to me in less than 5% of matches or so). The matchmaking interface for each of these games kind of blows though. It might take a while to actually get into a game (and VF5 is even a little more cumbersome in that you have to back out of a lot of menus just to change characters), but once you’re in a match it’s golden.

Blazblue seems to get a lot of high marks for netcode, but I haven’t played that online yet so I can’t say how AM2’s games compare.

there isn’t 1000+ hours of content PER SAY, you’ll just get sucked into it really easily.

Uhhhmmm, when I am at the arcade, I like playing third strike by myself.

My first single player game I liked was Inuyasha, feudal fairy tale (PS1) No joke! While the game itself was nothing special, the story that tied all of those mediocre battles together was actually kind of engaging (back before being an Inuyasha fan was legal justification for murder). There were different paths you could go down, you could take on opponents out of order, and some of your decisions changed up the scenarios a bit. Unlike some older fighting games where you had to learn about the story from instruction booklets or character conversations, this tale was fleshed out and it felt like a substantial part of the game (and without the cutscenes feeling like an burder, either). Sure, it’s crap by today’s standards, but this was the first time I felt like the fighting had a purpose behind it.

Right now, I would have to say HDR. Classic.

Virtua Fighter 4: Evo’s Quest mode is the best single-player mode against the AI. I spent a long time playing quest mode.

Lol, of all the games in my collection, someone decided to steal my VF4:Evo. They should have taken Tekken 4 instead.

A good single player fighting game is kind of an oxymoron. However, I have to say Alpha 3’s world tour mode is awesome. I always thought we should experiment with fighting game/rpg hybrids and as I suspected it was a lot of fun.

I’m going to have say Virtua Fighter 4 Evo or Virtua Fighter 5 for single player. Though I’m more leaning towards Evo since that Quest mode had better AI and more things to do in it like Quest Orders and the Iron man tournaments.
