Can’t go wrong with VF (EVO or 5).
Quite a few people were addicted to the arcade version of SCII’s mission mode. It looked essential like SC’s mission mode but it had player score rankings, and once in awhile you got to fight the ghosts of a player’s profile, who played on the same cabinet as you.
Ahh yeah. I used to play that all the time on the SC2 machine at the Gameworks in Minneapolis, back when they had it. Good stuff.
Also, dunno how the AI stacks up, but I always thought the World Tour mode was a lot of fun in SFA3 for the Playstation
Also, what’s this about VF4 EVO? 1000+ hours of a quest mode sounds… intriguing
That wasn’t a mission mode; it was called Conquest mode. It was more like fights scripted to the other player’s AI like you said to “control territory” and keep your data intact.
They probably scraped it for the consoles because it would only be able to mirror the arcade experience with online play or some connection to a network.
Anyway, I like SCI mission mode a lot more than SCII’s and SCIV is a waste of time so it doesn’t matter how good its mission mode is. :smokin:
Didn’t SCIII have some crazy single player mode? A bit strategy-like? My memory is real fuzzy here.
Rumble Fish 2 is one of my absolute faves…but other then that 3rd Strike and Tekkens are great.!
I enjoyed Street Fighter Alpha 3 single player. The AI was decent and it was fun to fight Juli and Juni at the same time before Bison. The soundtrack also helps the single player experience. Oh, and I almost forgot World Tour mode.
Fire Pro Wrestling D for dreamcast for Fire Pro Wrestling R for PS2. Not really fighting games but if you like pro wrestling the AI is fantastic and also customizable.
One that kept me going for ages was Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2, the story made seemed to last forever and there was plenty of RPG elements to keep you going aswell as other modes to play.
You’re probably thinking of Chronicles of the Sword, it was one player where you basically created your own guy/girl and proceeded through a strategy like story.
- SCII and III are really good for one player experiences
- The PS2 Naruto games will suck up a lot of time as well especially NH3 (I put 125 hours in that game, about 80 hours of it was 1 player mode)
- Virtua Fighter isn’t bad with the quest mode and stuff
- Tekken 5 DR is an obvious choice
- Guilty Gear + really smart AI = WIN! B
- KOF XI and UM’s good for a lot of dream matches
The original Soul Caliber on Dreamcast has the best single player mode I’ve ever seen in any fighter (in terms of variety and content, not necesarily AI). The amount of missions, unlockables, and story to do in that game was just phenomenal. Not to mention apart from the Quest mode they also had the usual Survival and Time attack options.
As for AI, I would probably say VF5 on 360, never played Evo, but I hear thats even better.
Hmmm… I just realized I still have a copy of VF4 laying around somewhere. Gonna pick up VF5 as well. Thanks guys.
Pretty much. It’s probably one of the very few fighters actually designed for single player fighting as a primary.
Most of my favorites have already been mentioned, but I can think of a few more. Ummm…
Tobal 2
Fighters Megamix
Project Justice
I know it’s semantics, but God Hand and the DMC series are awesome single player fighting games to me. They have all the same elements (RPS gameplay, creative custom combos, require timing and execution) but all wrapped in a story and exploration. If you need a more fighting game setting, both games have arena type modes where you battle through increasingly tougher and tougher rooms.
Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution on PS2 and Virtua Fighter 5 Online for the X-Box 360.
Those have the best A.I. in a fighting game without question. Quest Mode, found in both games, is an endless series of matches mimicking playing against top level players in an arcade environment. The A.I. found in the game takes actual inputs from top Japanese players.
The A.I. doesn’t play on a top level but the A.I. is sold mid level and will give you a run for your money any day of the week. It’s the best A.I. you’ll find by a mile. Nothing comes close. It’s like playing against solid mid or high-mid level competition but against an A.I. and not a human opponent.
In VF4EVO and VF5 you are playing against the inputs of top Japanese players. They even programmed mistakes and ‘human’ errors into the A.I. to make them seem more realistic. Sega was so far head of the pack with Quest Mode. There is nothing else even remotely like it.
Tekken 5 DRO’s Ghost Mode is a far off second (or third) from VF’s Quest Mode. But really if you want to play a good single player mode then pick up VF4EVO (PS2) or VF5 (for the 360 and not the PS3 as the 360 A.I. is upgraded).
In a similar vein, is there any fighting games with GOOD create-a-fighter modes?
I used to spend hours just making dudes and trying them out in the old N64 wrestling games.
Uh…Deadly Arts?
As far as single-player experiences go, Soulcalibur III’s “Chronicles of the Sword” mode was fun as hell for me. I also think the story mode in Evil Zone is good for a laugh.
