Godzilla: King of the Monsters May 2019.Trailer out!

In the original one, didn’t Kong win?
I remember that last scene shows him walking away in the ocean but never shows Godzilla, making the impression that he was last guy standing.

I also recall that in the original, Kong was supposed to get stronger by lighting. I wonder if they are going to still do that.

I believe he has fight where he knock out one of Godzillas fins and fashions a axe out of it. I need to sit down and watch Kong-Skull Island before this drops.

I’m guessing Godzilla also looks a tad smaller? I mean, BOTH of them are standing on that aircraft carrier and it’s still floating?

For someone who’s unfamiliar with GZ and Kong, would you recommend the recent US films ?

Also is this the sequence to watch the films?

Godzilla (2014)
Kong Skull Island
Godzilla King of the Monsters (2019)
Godzilla vs Kong (2021)

The decision to have Kong coming out on top in the OG film was because Toho at the time believed that Kong was the more popular monster during that era and thus made Kong the victor.

However, in the modern day, this has obviously changed with Godzilla within the past 7+ years since the Kaiju has seen a huge rise in popularity, obviously due to the 2014 release which gave it tremendous credibility.

There after you have Japan release their own in Shin Godzilla for 2016 which won I believe Best Picture in Japan that year, along with the anime Godzilla interpretations and KoTM in 2019. Moreover, Japanese films, animes are incredibly mainstream today which has also greatly boosted Godzillas popularity.

I don’t know the exact “data” however with everything, I would believe that it has shifted in Godzillas favor in terms of being the more popular Kaiju/Titan or whatever you want to call it, or at worst, if you want to low ball it, they are at least equal now in popularity.

Not hating on Kong either, because having both the Big G, and the Big Ape on one film, and in a modern film, which is taken seriously and not some joke for laughs, along with a Big Budget to back it up, their is nobody who isn’t a Kaiju fan that wouldn’t be hyped for this movie.

Btw, the trailer is getting some serious hype as well, with people who aren’t even Big Kaiju fans whom are completely ecstatic over the trailer.

I think what might happen is Kong will have the upper hand and Godzilla will adapt and the tide will turn in Godzilla’s favor. Then the team up will happen.

Welcome to 2015.

Legit interested in a movie thing, or only interested when other people are discussing it…

I enjoyed Godzilla 2014 in hindsight, but as Godzilla movies go it very much feels like “Let’s not lose this license guys.” It’s a case of beautiful imagery in parts of the movie, weighed against the greatest case of cinematic blue balls when the movie refuses to let you enjoy big monster fights.

The original Godzilla is a metaphor for nuclear annihilation, and Godzilla 2014 is a meditation on natural disaster. Not quite the monster mayhem oldheads expect at this point.

Kong Skull Island exists to justify this “Monsterverse”. I have never been a Kong fan, and if I had to recommend a Kong movie I’d go with the Peter Jackson version. For me, that one was a lot of fun and well made; but it’s utterly divorced from the Monsterverse nonsense. Kong Skull Island isn’t bad - it’s just on the level of every forgettable Marvel movie (read: most of them), a well made product that has nothing to say and exists only to extract the maximum amount of money.

Godzilla King of the Monsters is a bit more in line with what oldhead Godzilla fans want, but still not great. I would suggest the novelization which expands upon the implied Monsterverse lore, and fleshes out the stupid human characters plaguing the movie.

That is the one consistent aspect between Legendary and Toho movies. Utterly forgettable human characters that the movies spend far too much time with. King of the Monsters reminded me a lot of Godzilla Final Wars, but with the volume turned way down and far less excellent dumb human characters.

Seriously, if you’re not going to have Don Frye aka actual Mike Haggar in your movie, what’s the point friendo?

Instead we get - dude that looks like Seth Macfarlane and Stranger Things. . .

As the original was a collaboration between a US and Japanese movie studios the movie has two endings, one for the US market where Kong Wins, and one for the Japanese Market where Godzilla Wins. If you buy the DVD/Bluray now you get both endings.
