Not sure about what all monsters wetter from space, but didnât alien peopleâs from like planet X show up like all the time? There were definitely aliens in Destroy ago Monsters, and Final Wars.
The movie was great, but yet again the 3D ruined it. Well maybe ruined isnât the right word, but the 3D absolutely added nothing to the movie. Nothing but a money grabâŚ
I thought it was solid. I actually want to watch it again already. The scenes were that powerful I need to appreciate them some more
random thoughts and stuff
Spoiler
No lie I felt the pain the female Muto felt when she watched her eggs get wiped out. I respect how they managed to get an alien-like creature to portray that kind of emotion. Those animalistic displays of companionship between both creatures were also a nice touch
The MCâs dadâs death was a little on the anti-climactic side. I was just like =/
Radioactive flame breath gave me a raging hard on, no seriously, that was just godlike. They even gave his spines a blue glow beforehand. I was like âHeâs going SSJ? REALLY?â
The sky diving scene might be scene of the year for me no joke. I wish they didnât show it in the trailer the impact would have been sooo much greater to the point I mightâve just died from anxiousness
And they couldnât have gotten Godzillaâs initial appearance more perfect
Like most, my main issue stems from the crowdâs general disconnection with whatâs going on. Like me, Iâd be âMonsters? Wait MONSTERS?!â then Iâd ghost, needed a little more of that to feel more ârealâ. Itâs like thereâs no acknowledgement that they are fucking monsters. At the end particularly, the main guy looks directly into Godzillaâs eyes before it passes out, few minutes later it saves his life, and they just waved that scene by as if it had no significance. No sign of appreciation or respect at any point afterward. At least the token, philosophical, foreign guy gave props @ the end
Ghidora should definitely be the last, if they ever turn this into a series/era type deal. The whole Kaiju from space deal is pretty hard to do without getting real campy and/or ruining the âKaiju as a force of natureâ theme. Have him as being in a meteor that struck the Earth, possibly tied to some real meteor strikes in the past (Tunguska? the recent one in southern Russia some time back?) with the meteor either kept under observation by Monarch or some other military before something goes wrong and heâs woken up.
I like the design of the MUTOs as well. They were a good combination of new âAmerican Kaijuâ designs (pioneered by Cloverfield and Pacific Rim) and classic Japanese designs - with callbacks to Rodan, Gyaos from the Gamera films with some bits of Orga and even Gigan - but not exactly copying them and having their own original look as well.
MUTO faces arenât memorable. Thatâs the issue. Eyes are everything as is the familiar features seen in the animal kingdom. Maybe if they were given more of an inscect like appearance it would have worked but to me itâs just this triangular shape with teeth. I mean just look at the chibi version. It just looks like a thing. Not a bug or lizard or even a hybrid of both but just a thing.
Pac Rim monsters kinda sucked too since they mostly all shared a generic frame and color scheme. Which makes sense plot wise but they wonât be as memorable as past Kaiju and giant monsters.
I donât think that was the angle they were going with at all. What I grabbed from that scene is that Serizawa didnât want a nuclear bomb to go off to close civilization because HIS DAD AND TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE GOT BLOWN UP BY THE U.S. GOVERNMENT IN WORLD WAR II. Thatâs why Admiral Stenz had this âWell⌠shit, I feel bad.â kind of look on his face when Serizawa left.
Anyways, got back from the theater a few hours ago and I fucking loved this movie.
[details=Spoiler]I was a bit disappointed that Bryan Cranstonâs character, Joe, died early⌠because itâs Bryan fucking Cranston. It would have been nice to have him around a while longer because heâs such an amazing actor. Overall acting in the film was all right. There was enough human drama/interaction in the movie to have steady pacing between that and disaster happening everywhere. Like someone else mentioned, I did think it was a bit too coincidental that Ford happened to be in Honolulu when the male MUTO happened to be there chowing down on a submarine.
Speaking of the MUTO, I actually really liked their designs. I felt like they were complicated enough to be scary and threatening, but simple enough to be believable, living creatures that could have existed long, long ago (in a fantasy/sci-fi kind of sense). I was NOT expecting there to be two MUTOs (difference in size and physical characteristics per gender was a nice touch), considering not much was revealed in the trailers. If you go back and look at the trailers, youâll notice that they were âcensoredâ in such a way not to reveal too much. Two scenes stood out to me that were edited in the trailers. The first being when Fordâs wife, Elle, runs into the shelter and the doors closed behind her, you see Godzilla roaring⌠but the actual scene in the film is Godzilla and the male MUTO fighting it out. The second scene being the casino floor that the female MUTO crashes through; the âbreaking newsâ monitor shows the âearthquakeâ that happened in Japan but in the actual movie its breaking news of the female MUTO casually strolling through town. I loved the ânatural disasterâ approach the movie took, since the kaiju are pretty much forces of nature and weâre just in the way.
I loved the way Godzilla looked. Great redesign. He looked like a giant, hulking beast with tremendous physical strength. And yo. YOOOOOOOOOO. THAT ATOMIC BREATH. That shit had me so hype. When you first see that tail starting to glow, I muttered âoh shitâŚâ. And then the fatality on the female MUTO had me saying it again. Other people in the theater got pretty hype too. Oh yeah. That roar. Shit gave me chills every time.
I see some people giving the movie shit for not having enough monsters fighting, and I see their point⌠but I think the payout from all the build up was WELL WORTH IT. The final battle was really well done, and seeing San Francisco (SEE EVEN MOTHER NATURE HATES GAYS LIKE GOD, TAKE THAT YOU SIN FILLED CITY) in complete ruin and on fire after only a bit of fighting between Godzilla and the MUTOs was amazing. The halo jump scene was super cool too.[/details]
Iâll probably see the movie again sometime next week. I enjoyed it that much. I give it 9 atomic breaths⌠out of 10.
As far as a sequel goes⌠man, I might be in the minority here. Like, my heart WANTS a sequel, but my brain tells me that itâs going to be hard to execute properly without it being campy. I feel like the movie was so well executed that itâll be hard to top if a sequel was ever to be made.
My only gripes were when Godzilla was swimming and the fleet of ships/carriers were just chilling around him like escorts. I understand he wasnât out to kill humans, but being surrounded on all sides so closely should have prompted him to at least swat them all away. Just broke his character in that instance IMO. And of course the nuke being detonated so closely to the city was laughable, reminded of the DKR ending and how ridiculous that was.
Iâve read that Edwards has stated that if given the chance, heâd like to explore the whole âMonster Islandâ deal. Interestingly enough, the prequel comic actually has a âMoansta Islandâ where the Big G battles it out with another Kaiju.
The only problem I had with the carrier ships is how close they were to Godzilla when it was swimming. If he decide to rise at point then those ships would have been fucked.
Actually, the movie establishes that Godzilla doesnât think much of humans as a threat and wonât really go out of his way to harm them (save for the scene in the bridge where he was partly defending himself, partly just trying to get across it). Just like the end when he wakes up - instead of causing a ruckus, he just slowly walks out back into the ocean
Yeah I understand that part, you would think as an animal though heâd have a natural instinct to ward off so many things boxing him in. I donât know, the scene just looked a bit comical considering the humans had just made contact with him just a day or two prior and now they feel comfortable enough to get so close to him when destroying him with a nuclear bomb was on the table.
They should have saved a scene like that until after they established that heâs not really there to destroy humans, perhaps the second movie would have been a better time to show that. Iâm just nitpicking the scene because it stood out so much to me when I saw it.
