"Give me a Sit-rep!" - Chris Redfield UMvC3 Thread

Yeah, you essentially have to do an air series as late as possible, throw the medium grenade on the first frame of landing (buffered), and then you have to time the super to juggle properly. You can just click the link to my channel in my sig to see the video. It should be the million damage solo combo.

So what is Chris’ mix-up game?

Throw. That’s it. Some sort of lock down assist into option select throw after they leave block stun. Chris virtually has no mix-ups that are unique to just him. He really isn’t that type of character unfortunately. It’s one of his biggest flaws since he doesn’t have a solid way to score damage.

Yea landing a hit can be the hardest part, he pretty much has to rely on the opponent making a mistake and running into something.

Now back from Winter Brawl 7. Went 1-2 in Marvel. Beat a Thor/?/Super Skrull player. ? = Can’t remember the other character. Thor & Skrull, played keep away and tossed out grenades like a madman will using Vertical Arrows to stop the flying nonsense.

Lost to JRosa (Morrigan/Doom/Strider). The MorriDoom was just something I can’t beat. Air Magnums, H Grenade Toss, Proning, just didn’t work out. I also didn’t play it patiently enough so I got scraped.
Then, I lost to one of my local players in the area. Green Ace was also in my pool but I didn’t play him though.

Played my friend and local player Oreo (Dante/Vergil/Rocket Raccoon) and we were pretty even as well. He was in UMvC3 teams and was on the “Dragonball Breakfast Club” team.

Eventually, I played IFC Persia (Fiancee’ of IFC Yipes) and her Wesker was on point. I will say that Flamethrower and Land Mines helped me out tremendously. We just about broke even. Yipes has trained her very, very well.

This weekend was mad rough. I kept dropping combos left and right it was just sickening. I wasn’t really nervous or anything. My ability to combo my opponents just stifled this past weekend. Quite embarrassing indeed. Yet, I haven’t played too much of Marvel lately. I have been occupied with major life changes that will take place in March.

On another note, I am considering dropping Spencer. I’m not progressing with him as I’d like to and my movement with him isn’t very good. Therefore, I am considering the following characters to replace Spencer:
Vergil, Dante, Trish, Viper or Jill. So far, I kinda like Trish and I can get an unblockable setup with Taskmaster using Swordmaster.

Thoughts?
Sorry that I didn’t get to see you there! Sounds like you ran into a tough pool.

My personal opinion - I think Spencer is Chris’s best teammate. I’ve deliberated over what the perfect Chris team would be and I believe it has to involve him. That being said, if he isn’t working out for you then you may need to clear your head and try some other various characters out. Out of your listed options I would suggest Dante since jam session is amazing for keepaway/combos, or Vergil since he’s effing Vergil. Also consider changing up the Task assist since vertical is not always the ideal choice.
I chose Vertical Arrows mainly to help Chris since he is vertically challenged. I would change Taskmaster’s assist if I had Dante’s Jam Session to deal with the vertical space. At this point, maybe it’s my execution or something but I feel as if I am playing with 2 characters (Chris/Taskmaster) even though I am playing with 3 characters. My Spencer is ass lol.

A damn shame I didn’t see you there ChrisD. We could have run some sets. I did play Densuo though and we ran some sets.
Maybe you should try out Task/Chris/Jam Session for a while and see how that works out. Land mine really helps Task’s keep away, or you can choose gun fire for more chip.

And yea I’ll stay updated here so I know who’s going to where and we can play some matches next time. I played Densuo at the last Curleh Mustache, fun times.
GcYoshi was also talking about dropping Spencer. In your case Needlecrash, your Spencer doesn’t have an assist unless Chris is still alive, so I can see why you’re struggling to compete with him. I’ll give you my opinion on dropping him for Dante, Vergil or Trish.

Dante’s Jam Session is an awesome assist for Chris (been running it since Vanilla) since it helps out establishing grenades so well and keeps your opponent at bay on hit or block. It also works really well for combos and will give your Chris some great damage. You also have a safe DHC with Devil Trigger. The thing you need to be concerned with while using Jam Session is it’s start up. It’s a defensive assist but not for close range and if you’re opponent has Disruptor or Tatsu assist, Jam Session will be a non-factor. Still, you’ve been using Chris without a close-quarters assist already so this shouldn’t be too much of an issue for you. Just something to keep in mind. Switching to Taskmaster’s Horizontal Arrows will also be pretty slick for Dante and will allow you to use Combination Punch assist for Chris if you so choose, to extend combos and have an invincible Crossover Counter.

Vergil’s Rapid Slash is an alright assist for Chris, and I say “alright” because it’s at its best when used in conjuction with a ‘Get Off Me’ assist like Tatsu or Plasma Beam. For lack of better words, it’s basically a complimentary assist for other more powerful assists Chris can work with. In your case, Rapid Slash would be tough to use in most situations due to it’s start up, but when it connects, it gives a ton of breathing room and will let you set-up grenades and gun fire. The issue I see with switching to Vergil is you would probably keep Vertical Arrows for Taskmaster because Rapid Slash doesn’t cover the air like Jam Session, but Vergil without a horizontal assist doesn’t let you abuse his dirtiest mix-ups. Still, Rapid Slash can add some major damage in the corner and Spiral Swords is arguably the best DHC in the game. Consider having him on anchor as well if you use him as he’s arguably the best anchor in the game too, haha.

Trish’s Peekaboo assist is really slick for Chris’s neutral game as it allows you to throw grenades or shoot guns without worrying about air dashes or jump-ins. I ran this assist for quite some time before switching to Drones but I have to say, it was a fantastic assist for setting up grenades and confirms were easy with it. Unfortunately, if you use this assist, your team will have no combo extensions for Chris, even if you switch to Taskmaster’s Horizontal Arrows. This is tough for Chris because landing a single hit with him is hard enough, but two or three is quite a feat. Still, if you feel it’s worth the awesome neutral game, I’d recommend this assist. Safe DHC into either of Trish’s supers for different scenarios and Trish does quite well with a horizontal assist too. Consider using Land Mine assist for Chris if you pick up Trish and switch Taskmaster’s assist to Horizontal Arrows. If you don’t switch it, I’d recommend using Gun Fire to allow Trish to rush down.

I didn’t know that GCYoshi was considering dropping Spencer as well. It’s early in the game and I still have some thinking to do. Right now, I am thinking either Dante or Trish. I have been having a lot of fun with Trish lately and she isn’t bad. I need to play with Dante more though. Thanks for the analysis vsDenjin. This really helps me out man.
Yeah, I’m also dropping Dante since both of my assists have too much start up. I faced a few Akuma assists and got bodied clean since I had no answer. I’m considering using Akuma/Drones for certain match-ups. Hurts combos but combos don’t matter if you can’t land a hit. We’ll see though. No problem man.

I know I’ve said this before, and probably to you specifically, but if you give it a shot, I’m sure you’d absolutely fall in love with Iron Fist as an assist. He’s one of the worst characters in the game, but goddamn, he and Chris and the bestest of friends.

Went to a local tourney in Virginia today. I got my ass handed to me by my friend DJHUOSHEN. The phrase “getting scraped” means nothing to what I experienced tonight. I’ve been playing like ass man. I don’t like it. Trying to get even a single hit with Chris is daunting. It’s not like Wesker where I can teleport and just body someone. Just salty at myself for playing so shitty.

I think this maybe time for me to step back from Marvel for a bit. Twitch archive should be up soon (http://www.twitch.tv/cfas_live/b/373191898). My match starts at 24:00. This has just been a really shitty week for me in Marvel. Ugh.

On the other hand, I ran Chris/Trish/Taskmaster tonight at the venue. Trish’s Peekaboo assist saved my ass a few times. Just need to get adjusted to her normals as well. Looks like I may be keeping her after all lol.
what are some good incoming mixups with chris,

In a lot of cases dont use a mix up just throw fire grenades when they are about to come in, massive amounts of chip especially if they don’t push block it. granted the dash under and back is a good mix up, or a simple high low with a assist are good, but it is riskier than getting a ton of free chip

I was thinking crawling with prone and calling jam session. Arnt you invisible once they cross up? Since I want setups to get vergil

i’m glad you asked since i’ve been working on a couple of them. everyone goes for flaming grenades because they’re so safe. the problem with that is everyone sees it coming and can defend against it easily and some characters cannot be comboed off of flaming grenade hit. imo its a wasted opportunity for chris to land a hit that can kill since he may not get another chance…

here’s a couple off of a corner snap back:
-immediately Lp landmine, boulder punch H. the first hit of the boulder punch wiffs but the second crosses under and the landmine explosion will otg or make it safe.
-mp grenade, fH,s. this can cross under or not.
-immediately boulder punch H cancel into grenade launcher super so that the up grenade hits the incoming character. this can cross under or not and this is riskier and a bit more costly since it requires meter usage and/or xfc to make it safe.
-grenade into simple s launcher.
-jump forward into prone position. chris will cross under and be invincible to most moves.
-grenade M dash forward jump back jm,jh. grenade will hit
-grenade into simply jump m,h,s land h,s. hits from front but prevents airdashes
-grenade do nothing and throw before grenade explodes
-grenade dL,dM when they land to prevent chicken blocking

all cross unders if times right will put the opponent in front allowing you to continue to combo in the corner.

the easiest timing for these is after a snapback but he can also set it up after a kill. the only problem with chris’s incoming mixups after a kill is unless he kill with the last hit of his super he just won’t have time to set up some of these incoming mixups.

can you guys critique on my chris team,
used it this past weekend :http://www.twitch.tv/lnsflive/b/384595560
first 3 matches

I regularly do these and not much else. Don’t forget that is you get push blocked on the jump M you can dash in and air-grab afterwards. The timing is key but it’s very doable.
Never really thought about those other setups in detail. Dash under grenade launcher super sounds dangerous unless you have something like missiles covering you if it’s blocked I guess.

I always liked the idea of initiating some contact against someone in the corner because it’s not guaranteed I’ll get the hit but it is guaranteed that I can keep them pinned down for a couple solid seconds and go from there. I would only risk crossups against the tough anchors like Vergil and Strider and whoever else I don’t want to let live and start their game up.

some of those mixup are more useful than others and some shouldn’t be used at all, they’re just examples to show that chris has some ambiguous stuff that no one expects to come from him and also to stir some creativity from other chris players since no one has mentioned nor have i seen some of the stuff i’ve listed anywhere. i’m sure there’s a couple more out there.

another way to create a mixup situation but with another character on your team without using meter or risking an air exchange is to raw tag into the other character after a groudbounce magnum with chris and link in a snapback when in the corner. good if another character on your team has better incoming mixups.
