i’m sure the lariat is still a good anti air and anti crossup. and it really was almost a free get out of jail card vs rufus rushdown game. jump cancelled lariat beats all of rufus options. can’t throw gief cuz of the jump cancelling, can’t jump back again cuz he’ll get hit by the lariat and i don’t think rufus can punish his lariat on block or even whiff after a dive kick sans ex messiah kick. rufus c.mk has no range to punish. c.hp comes out too slow and certain parts of his arm can still get hit by the lariat. same with c.hk. certain parts of him can still get it despite the fact that hes ducking, and his c.hk doesnt have enough range against a backward moving lariat.
thats the biggest problem with the lariat. you try to punish a blatantly missed lariat yet get beaten out cleanly because the lariat hits so damn low. this was never a problem in the old games.
i don’t use gief but this had me laughing. first of all, it doesn’t work on the ground but he really expects gief to grab people out of the air with a 720 motion, let alone shoryukens and hurricane kicks? not saying it couldn’t be done, but how practical is this?
people still can’t air throw shoryus or hurricane kicks reliably when its done with 2 buttons and one directional input.
air to air only 720 grabs have been implemented in other fighters before. duck kings LDM (leader super) in kof11 and the result was one of the most useless LDMs in the game. but at least duck king can still combo into it. i highly doubt gief can.
rufus can punish a whiffed lariat… and no you cant spam lariat to get out of rufus mix game… a good rufus can dive at you in a way to stuff your lariat… like A LOT of the cast… it ISNT a get out of jail free card against anyone half way decent.

I will main Zangief in SSF4. Offline and in player matches against good players from srk or other SF4-sites. Players that want to improve skill.
But:
Sometimes I play Ranked. Or even Championship. Because sometimes I simply don’t want to fight the same guy over and over or I just want to play 4, maybe 5 matches. Just for the fun. After a day of work.
And if Gief’s ways to get in have really gotten nerfed badly, then Dudley, Juri, Balrog, T.Hawk, hell, even Hakan, here I come.
Because I refuse to get taunted by Sagats, Seths, Akumas and Guiles that I chase around the stage for almost 90seconds. Gief can already be boring for me sometimes, when almost every match against these guys takes that long, with 80sec chasing-time and 10sec destroying time.
I’d hate to see all these scrubs hatemailing around that this “cheap bitch bastard Zangief got nerfed because he was soooo op in SF4”.
There were two things I loved about Gief in SF4:
Against good players, it was always challenging. You had so many ways to pressure your opponent, so many mindgames, so many ways to get in. You had to think about how to pressure a good footsie-based Ryu or Ken. Zangief had so many ways of punishing people for doing stupid things, your opponent had to think different to beat you.
Counterpicking, hatemailing, srk- and random fullscreen tatsu-spamming idiots had a hard time against Gief. Spamming j.rh, cr.rh was impossible, every whiffed fire-srk one step further down to hell. Players that were too lazy to adjust their gameplan got destroyed.
And I got to admit, I loved that. If they take that away from me… my inner bastard will die.

hard to tell any changes off one match especially when going against hakan.
Watching the stream today of the 1UP play it looked to me like GH damage was nerfed hard. When i saw people do his bnb combo it looked like the EXGH did about 1/2 to 2/3 the damage it should have been. So i think exgh will still combo but i dont think the damage is going to be any good. Non ex GH is one of the worse moves in the game and they nerf it come on.
Man, I’m in the training mode for 2 hours already. Got to step my Balrog game up. lol.

Ex-hand seems to do good damage against T.Hawk.
It does a little less than 1/7 (I used a ruler lol) of T-Hawk’s health of 1150. It did 180 before but it appears to be at about 160 or 155. Which isn’t that big of a nerf considering all reversal damage for all characters got reduced. I’m more dissapointed that Gief doesn’t get 1200 HP…
i agree. if its just a damage nerf im ok with that…
nearly all the characters got damage nerfs… sagat… ryu… bison… who knows who else is confirmed on a damage nerf…
anyways. with about 8 of the 10 characters of the new roster having 1000 or less hp… and stun… its sounds ok to me.
only thing i was slightly put off by was having less HP… i felt 1100 was TOO low. should have been 1150.
also, im hoping that his normals didnt get nerf’d damage or priority…

Yeah, after sleeping on the nerfs. I guess its not that bad. True they did nerf dmg on everyone else that was good. Lairat, I can deal with. I mostly use it as an anti air anyways so I can alter my game to not try and hit crouching players…no problem. The only thing that still bugs me is the nerf on GHand, they better not have changed its properties. I can always deal with a damage nerf too but geez, if they make it any slower fighting anyone runaway will be more annyoying than it already is.
As long as you can link lk to EX GH and as long as lp GH is still just as fast on startup and recovery.
EX Green hand does 160 damage in SF4, not 180.
After looking at the Zangief vs T-Hawk video, honestly it looks like the damage on EX Green hand is still 160. But maybie they made it to 150? 10 damage nerf is nothing.
BTW most of zangief nerfs are still unconfirmed. Exemple weaker standing far mp. That capcom blog say alot of bullshit to.
Ya I found that out latter. But I agree that the damage nerf might only be 10 from the looks of it. And Capcom Q and A said Zangief’s Skills will have a damage reduction, such as GH. I wouldn’t classify normals as skills. Perhaps Lariat does 10 less as well. If this is where the nerfs end then I will be happy.
I knew capcom would break gief becauseh he’s powerful against scrubs, and whether you like it or not, capcom no longer make true competitive games, they make fighting games to appeal to johnny xbox and a big kick in the face for anyone who spent years learning the finer points of the game and didn’tr rush off to become another spammy sagat or akuma.

Many of the other matchups are 10-5 or 10-6.
No other charcter in the entire game has as many unwinnable matchups as zangief, the air ultra will be useless or almost luck based once people get used to it or produce those horrible turtle games you say in 3rd strike where people just stay on the ground tapping their best normal.
My only consolation is they have another two grapplers in the game and DJ, so I’m not overly upset, but its clear to me Capcom don’t seem to possess the knowlede to make the required changes to the game anymore, if this is a precedent for SSf4, I would expect a VERY BROKEN game at about the 6 month period and like the old one, we’ll have to wait for Super Turbo for a decent version.
Play Gief against seth sagat seth and tell the game is balanced. Lol, clueless.
So all they done with gief is nerf him, give him a new ultra, and didn’t do any fundamental changes which make him look such a badly designed character in certain matchups.
