Even if it did fail solely because of racism somehow, then that would still be the film’s fault though just for having Leslie Jones’s character be who she apparently is in the film, especially since she apparently plays that type of (unfunny) character all of the time, which is a clear testament to her “acting” skills. So it’s not like they didn’t know what they were getting; as an aside, I still don’t understand how anyone finds most of SNL funny, but meh, humor is quite subjective I suppose.
That said, this does bring up the question I’ve been wondering for a while, even before Feig’s clear breakdown sign got posted: who is this film’s target audience beyond “womyn” (not a typo)?
I honestly can’t figure it out. This movie is not a continuation, so it’s obviously not old Ghostbusters fans. At the same time, it’s an all-female remake that’s trying to disguise itself as a continuation in trailers, so it’s not also people that would be otherwise interested in a more blatant reimagining beyond the swapping out of dicks for vaginas, funny for unfunny, and any elements of horror and personality for slapstick and informed attributes of intelligence. It’s not using any of the other Ghostbusters characters who hadn’t appeared in movies yet, such as the people the characters from the Extreme group, so it’s not appealing to any of those fans either. And given what Feig apparently recently said, it’s obviously not trying to appeal to “geek culture” as a whole, so who is left that might actually be interested?
I’m even more confused on this front than suddenly finding Chris Hemsworth actually good-looking. Please help.
A lot of the problem of this one is the style of comedy. The original movie has dry almost serious delivery of the jokes. This one seems definitely focused on a lot of “internet funny” stuff. That decision changed a lot of the tone of the movie; it also changed a lot of the approach the characters take in the script and for the performances.
I don’t blame any of the women who wanted to be a part of this. Actually I find it incredibly unfair to blame them for anything. They grew up in our generation. There’s not many people that would say no to the question “Do you want to be a ghostbuster?” Unfortunately they are caught in a situation where they are the faces of a disaster of which they have little control save for trying to make the best of it.
After watching the second trailer, I believe the reddit leak was true. I don’t plan to ever watch the movie, but I can’t wait for people to shit all over it. A shitting of biblical proportions.
I still can’t get over the Haunted Mansion looking ghosts. I want to give this movie a chance but it just doesn’t seem to want or care to appeal to fans of the original. Plenty of other summer movies I can spend my money on
Not appealing to fans of the original will be it’s biggest downfall. Sony wants this to be big as it’s one of the few franchises that they have. Paul Feig is doing his hardest to flush it down the toilet.
(This summer is looking quite weak movie-wise, at least off the top of my head. I honestly can’t think of anything that I remotely want to see until Doctor Strange comes out in November.)
Yeah, at this point the only thing that Sony is looking like the only positive thing it’s going to be able to say is it’s not as bad as Gods of Egypt and not quite as disappointing as Batman v Superman. That’s definitely high praise worth wasting spending your money on, clearly.
blames the women who wanted to be a part of this because there’s not shit you can do about it
Seriously, though, I couldn’t care less about any of the women in this, which is part of the problem personally. There’s no attachment for me here as far as casting goes–not that there usually is–other than Stupid Sexy Chris Hemsworth, which isn’t really my thing either since I’m not the type of person to watch something just because I find an actor or two in it vaguely attractive. If anything, then the lack of attachment is what makes the mediocre-at-best or horrible qualities of this movie shown in the trailers stand out even more.
At most, the only person among the group of actors I’ll blame is Leslie Jones just because, again, she apparently always act like that type of character and I personally find that type of “ghetto” character unfunny and actively annoying in most instances. So fuck her and the one-trick pony she rode in on. #YesAllMisogynists#YesAllRacists
People mad at an all woman cast (lol first reply to that tweet) are stupid as fuck, since it shouldn’t contrast from the movie at all since it’s a reboot and reboots are absolutely fine for changing things up. The problem, judging from these trailers, is that the humor just seems so… below the bar. Like everything we’ve seen from the trailers just seem like slap-stick, lowest common denominator humor outside of dick and fart jokes (fart jokes definitely seem on the table though). For a reboot of the franchise it doesn’t seem like they tried very hard, but we’ll have to see how the full release shapes up. Who knows, maybe we’ll all be pleasantly surprised… but I doubt it.
The fact that you can’t say anything negative about this shit show without being called sexist is fucking retarded, like yeah there are a handful of cvnts out there that are gonna hate it because of the cast but let’s not act like it’s the majority, especially when characters like Princess Leia and Ellen Ripley are regarded so highly when it comes to sci-fi/nerd culture. Me and my gf were discussing how the first movie, even with it’s ridiculous premise of there being ghosts and people going out to catch them, the humour was for the most part grounded in reality and that’s most likely why the film worked. The humour here is something you’d expect from an Adam Sandler movie, shit replace the main cast of Pixels with the new Ghostbusters cast and the video game characters with ghosts and I bet they end up looking pretty much the same.
I’d like to point out that from the very moment it was announced that there would be an all female Ghostbusters movie, that the entire Internet predicted what kind of movie it would be right down to the cast and comedy style. Sexism has nothing to do with that. It has to do with how predictably shitty Hollywood can be.
I am also thoroughly insulted that anyone with eyes and even the slightest sense of humor would dare insinuate that this movie is being shitted on because of “muh soggy knees” or whatever the fuck those multi-colored-hair-having black holes of attractiveness have to say.
I think that people hope that Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum get to be in the good one that acts as a sequel to 2 and takes cues from the video game which was part 3 in spirit
