Getting Into Marvel

Hey guys I’m new here. I used to play Mortal Kombat 9 but then I kept getting frustrated with all the bugs, glitches, terrible online, and excessive patching. Basically I’m looking to switch over to marvel and plan to pick up Ultimate when it comes out, since that’s supposed to be the patched version. I’ve tried AE before, and it was good, but I only had it for a weekend. I wanted to ask where is a good source to get information on the basic mechanics of Marvel, and I’ve been thinking of playing the team of Amateratsu/Storm/Wesker. Is this a good team? Anybody I should replace in order to get a team that works better together? Thanks in advance.

Here is the Wiki.

I suggest getting the official MvC3 guide. While a lot of the combos are outdated and incomplete being that it is a week one book, It is a good start.

As for team, I don’t play any of those characters but they are all solid characters. You will have to just get in the game and see how they work out together.

I suggest that you try out 6 characters and whittle it down or try using different combinations until you find a suitable team.

Check out the basics guide here.
And I suggest you just wait a month and pick up UMVC3 and the respective guide by Bradygames (same folks writing it).
If you already have MvC3, then there’s enough things to get you started on the forums.

Look up your character-specific threads; they usually have good mentions for team mates.
Storm/Ammy/Wesker can work well re: Storm DHC glitch into Ammy and/or Wesker. Wesker is a good anchor at that too.
But no more glitch in UMVC3, so every team will have to be looked at again due to balancing changes.

  1. Ignore the DHC glitch - it’s not in Ultimate so you’d be wasting your time

  2. Do not pick up the current MvC3 guide - it’ll be almost useless next month. There’s plenty in the SRK Hyperguide and the forums to get you the info you need.

  3. Don’t go into the game with your heart set on a specific team. Pick one character you like and build around them. Otherwise you’ll cause yourself a lot of trouble trying to piece characters together that may not fit.

  4. Last but not least - don’t worry about vanilla. Use the time to practice execution and get gameplay experience. Worrying about the specifics of vanilla will do you no good as there are a lot of mechanics that are getting changed.

Hey guys thanks for the tips. I checked out the wiki and it’s great, and yes I haven’t bought MvC3 yet I’m waiting for ultimate. I really like Storm and Ammy as characters so they’ll definitely be on at least one of my teams. As I check out the hyper guides I’m liking a bunch of other characters so I just abandoned a team idea and made a list of the characters I want to try when I get the game. Also can you explain to me what vanilla is? I’ve heard the term before but I still don’t know what it means.

Vanilla refers to the first game in a series. So the first SF4 is referred to as “SF4 Vanilla” or just “vanilla”. MvC3 is now considered a “vanilla” since there’s a new “updated” version of the game.

If you wanna get really picky SSF4 could be considered “SSF4 Vanilla” since we have SSF4 AE.
