Did you read my post at all?
Huh. Learn something new every day.
OP is FAIL. Most groups (but especially internet nerds) develop their own slang and use it FTW. Sure, people stare at you funny when you say LOL in RL but they are just scrubs. QED GG no RE.
lolz
Like it or not, those chumps are part of the community as well. They may be asses, but you need to just take the bad with the good. I don’t think its your intention, but the argument here is starting to sound like you’re attacking the people who play online the vast majority of the time. Not saying that IS what you’re doing, but that’s how its coming off to me, a guy who has few opportunities to get out to stuff.
After viewing a stream of the NorCal Regionals yesterday, I fully understand OP’s complaint with “poserspeak”.
I’ve only been following the fighting game community for a few years, so I knew it would be wise of me to shut my mouth and witness the high-level players in action. However, the amount of mindless drivel that various viewers were spewing over the chatbox was irritating. For example, after the end of each match, regardless of how the loser reacted, there was a flood of “SALTY” comments. They were totally inappropriate and out of context. Another comment that was rehashed far too many times was “SCRUB”. It was ridiculous that anybody would even think of applying such a term to these players of such clearly advanced skill.
The only explanation I had for the chatbox being polluted with such nonsense was that the viewers who were spouting these phrases had such a tenuous grasp of MvC3 that they had nothing valuable to contribute, yet still wanted to “fit in”, and therefore resorted to typing any comments vaguely related to the fighting game community.
I feel no shame in admitting that I’m a massive greenhorn in the complex world of fighting games. Because of this, I realise it’s best for everyone if I were to just remain silent and wait until I’ve developed my knowledge of fighting games before opening my mouth.
That’s not my intention at all, though I do see your point. Did you read my earlier posts?
You’re a smart guy, smarter than most, sadly everyone isn’t like you.
Those are just stream monsters. They are the equivalent of field mice.
My thoughts exactly, and as Negative-Zer0 said above me, you can’t pay attention to the stream monsters, they’re all obsessed with SALT to the point where they say it just to be saying it. Do not try to rationalize what people are saying in stream chat or even understand it, because it’s pointless. Regardless of what stream your watching you can expect a few things to happen.
If Marn or any person that would be considered overweight comes on the stream, expect to see ‘‘a wild snorlax appears’’ and other remarks about their weight. Expect people to make fun of what the players are wearing or their physical appearance. When a girl comes on stream expect them to act like 2 year olds saying ‘‘show tits’’ etc. When someone loses a match shakes hands and walks off clearly content with a match, they are still ‘‘salty’’. If a top player loses expect someone to call him a scrub. Seriously, 98% of the chat is filled with trolls, and not the clever kind. So you have two options, endure it and try to ignore the trolls or hide stream chat like I do. I’ll never understand why being on the internet makes people act like that, and I would really hope people don’t act like that in real life.
And I’d just like to point out that the retarded stream monster salt obsessed trolls and the equally retarded people who leave comments on youtube videos calling top players free, while there are a lot of them, it does not equal the fighting game community as a whole. So people on youtube/stream chats that speak like that are trolls not posers.
Lmao… come on man…really?..
Most people who say ‘Salty’ or ‘Yomi’ and shit like that are being sarcastic. I know I am. If anyone’s being serious when they say that, well damn…
As someone who grew up playing the old school fighting games (I’m nearly 30) and just got back into the scene (haven’t played anything since MK4) it’s just a case of memetics. People latch onto little things and run them into the ground. There’s a band called Iron Monkey that put out an album called “Ruined By Idiots”. That sums up most instances of a meme. For example: a well placed momma’ joke can be funny. That friend of yours that says “That’s what she said”, or “Your mom’s a xxxxx”? That’s these people.
I was saying salty before it was cool.
I’ve never been bothered by what phrase or word is being used a lot in the community, I mean if you’re talking about people who spam stream chats then of course it’s going to sound stupid and grating. Hell I was at NCR all weekend and I didn’t hear overusing words/phrases like salty and bodied.
This has been my opinion.
John Crawley, duh. MEGAAAAAAA!!!
I’ve been around since B2 and never… oh… wait a minute… hides
Where I grew up (Philadelphia) we used to call people “salty” all the time, way before I ever heard it used in FG context. I still use it outside of the FG community as well, and I think a lot of older people on here are the same way.
Where’s the dislike button on this thing.
On the real, whenever I’m talking about character strategies it bothers me how many times I use the word ‘game’.
I don’t think anyone ever used the term Yomi seriously except for Sirlin
swim in de ALANTIC ohshen, ge dat SEA SALT
@Elder: Never knew that, and it’s good to hear. The reason I hated the term, was because I thought it was an SFIV thing to which people were over reacting. I mean, people see a mix-up in SFIV that would be sub-par in other games and call it vortex and ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ over it like it’s new stuff.
