"Gettin' that Bike $!" AE Balrog Match-up Thread

If there is a match up that I understand and know how what I prefer my game plan to be I will go into training mode and work on scenarios within the match up so that I can properly prepare for it. Learning all the spacing and where and what can happen depending on the spacing is important. From training mode, me and Kineda were able to flesh out more of the boxer vs. akuma match up so I understand it very well regardless of it’s high difficulty.

You definitely should put the time in alone or with a buddy to make sure you flesh out what you want to know and are willing to work on.

My buddy Kensou uses Guy/Ibuki who both have 0+1 command grabs like Balrog. He showed me a way to focus attack auto-dash into instant grab which is pretty interesting and has some uses. The input from the right side looks like:

:mp:+:mk:,:hcb:,:hcb:,:3p:

It uses the dash shortcut, if you tap :f:,:b:,:f: you get a fwd dash. If you tap :b:,:f:,:b: you get a backdash. You can’t do a 720 to make this happen, you absolutely have to do the full double hcb for it to come out. In general, it can punish anything that has at least 20f of recovery from the active frame you get hit. So some normals that are really good pokes, but are not cancellable e.g. most of the cast’s sweeps. Obviously it loses to armor breakers and moves that hit twice since the fwd dash has no invincibility. Eventually i’ll put a video together showing what can be punished and what the input looks like, but probably not for a while. U2’s damage buff might make it more useful, especially if the stun is still the same, even w/o any oki.

Very interesting thread, haven’t figured out how to read the image but i just glanced at it.

so i encountered someone using adon last night and she was just being random as fuck since she didnt know much about shit and beat my rog. so instead of dumbing it down i just picked dee jay and proceeded to cross up death but thats besides the point. she kept doing jaguar kick(off the wall one) and doing ex sometimes and i realized that if you crouch fierce the normal one like your suppose to the ex one will hit you but if you do it for the ex one the normal will hit you.

since he doesnt flash yellow till its too late to react i realized i can get fucked by it pretty easy. anyone have advice on this?

if you do adon in training mode on hardest difficulty he does it all the time so you can test it out.

@Kup - if it helps I just look at their meter and the situation. If you are near the corner they may do it so they will have max damage chance otherwise try to just see if meter was used.

You should have enough time to react or just block if you are unsure.

Also, have u tried to headbutt the exversion?

At the risk of sounding thick, what the hell is that picture supposed to mean?

i can do that but id rather find a way thats not so “psychic”. and ya the blocking is fine but i wanna try to avoid that free mix up as much as i could in super.

does meter get burned when he flashes yellow or on the jump back? cause if its on the jump back then i can get down with that. but if its on the flash then its just impossible to react to unless your only waiting for him to do that and focusing super hard on it.

and the headbutt i think would just lead to baiting. but ill check the ex meter watching see if that helps.

lol, it’s supposed to show what balrog can do in reaction to a fireball thrown at certain ranges, it’s coming from a “master guide” about tossing plasma in the Ryu forums. Like we know the spacing where it’s unsafe to throw a fireball when balrog has back-charge, or where we can reaction headbutt from. It’s like that.

AFAIK, you should be able to cr.hp each one on reaction, regardless of ex or no. ex.hb does work, but it’s semi-psychic, it should always hit and never trade. non-ex can probably be stuffed since it’ll hit deep into balrog’s hitbox.

Edit:
@kup, check out this post, it’s super, but it should still work.

Ay yo. If you hit someone with a jumping lk. air to air, you can cross under them for a nasty mixup.

Here’s the video on auto-dash U2. Since it doesn’t seem like we’re getting a range increase (damn you Guy!), this is another way to use it effectively. Almost like dash U1/super

I do, though he mains Chun. We spent alot of time in it but I have been going to a local spot to find other players.

Right ok I get it now. Thanks.

Oh, and btw, some of your text is white.

Definitely find other players, grow your scene even if it’s just you and your “more serious” buddies.

Seek out strong opponents and thrive

Hey guys,
Anyone around here would like to spar with me?
Balrog’s my one of my hardest matchups.

I play: Gouken (~7800bp , ~2700pp atm) To give you a rough estimate of me.
I’d be interested in confident Balrog’s… Lets just say *‘I have you fight money!’

If so just request a friend to.
PSN: Black-Toof

I always do ^-^

!!! Yessss

Xbox otherwise I’d love to tear your Gouken apart.

ooooo buddy, Cody Matchup just got difficult. his 3f crouching short is sooooo good. Had a buddy last night who consistently reversal cr.short every lp.ds on block :[ , these were in block strings. at the moment i don’t know if you can space it appropriately to avoid this reversal, but it’s got some range on it, that’s for sure.

I’ll add you my psn is daviddangerous

a bit about Seth and his mixup:

Seth’s mixup potential mid-screen seems a bit limited (versus the corner). Mid-screen, the combos into head stomps seem to be :
[]cr.hp xx lp.dp, d+mk, d+mk, d+hk
[
]cr.hp xx lp.dp, fwd.j, d+mk, d+mk, d+mk, d+hk
[]cr.hp xx hp.dp xx FADC nj, d+mk, d+mk, d+mk, d+hk
[
]cr.hp xx hp.dp xx FADC nj, d+mk, d+mk, d+hk
If he does three stomps then he can’t cross under you by just walking forward or dashing, if he does two stomps he still can (this is only true mid-screen). If he does jump.hk after stomps and dive kick, you can whiff punish by walking back and using cr.lp or st.lp and in this case it’s not a meaty jump-in but you’ll have a hell of a time trying to auto-correct ex.dash. He can kinda mix you up with j.hk and dive kick. Both are still safe jumps against headbutt mid-screen it seems.

In the corner he can do the above combos in addition to landing stomps off of a connected lightening legs. In the corner, whether he does two or three stomps he can still cross under you by holding forward etc. If he does j.hk in this situation it’s a meaty jump-in and you can’t walk away and jab him. In the tests I did it seemed like you could land headbutt, lp/mp tend to trade while hp/ex seemed to be him clean and still have enough time to get enough charge for ultra.

Although it’s most likely he’ll be walking under you, don’t let him put you into a block-string mid-screen by using j.hk or dive kick when you can just walk out of them. PapaRhino would know more, but i’ve got no clue if he’s still into SF4 let alone Seth.
