If both players choose the same character make both players pick again but, make the character they both chose crossed out on both ends. Keep repeating this until both players select different characters. If it goes all the way with every time selecting the same character force random until it picks 2 different characters.
I know this is just a silly idea but, I really do find mirror matches a tad bit silly.
I always have the I’m better than you mindset in mirror matches so I guess I kinda like it. Though recently I’ve been using Balrog a lot in scoreboard, and as if it wasn’t bad enough I always lose with him, if my opponent chooses Balrog, he just straight up rape me. But yeah in the end, I still never mind mirror matches, and forcing people to choose differently doesn’t seem all that great to me.
If it was in arcade or story mode I could see your beef…but dude? O_o
If you want vs mode to make sense, play a game without fireballs and stretchy limbs. Mirror match is the only way to know who is better with a given character properly.
Your cunning plan has a flaw. Technically we could each pick the same character repeatidly until we have X’d out everyone. While unlikely it is possible.
Fireballs - too imba. They hit you while you’re like, what, at least halfway across the screen?
Zangief - his spinning pile driver killed me once. Not cool.
DeeJay - his victory dance is stupid, and he’s stupid, and you’re stupid for playing him.
The new voice that says “Perfect” - it says it all stupid like.
If you need some form of flavor reason to accept why two identical characters can fight, just pretend that Ken is facing himself in his mind or that one is a clone or robot made by Bison. Better yet, pretend one is Twelve.
This is the same gaming logic that leads to people complaining how stupid it is I just beat their Akuma with Dan or Sakura or whoever. Its a game. I love storyline and flavour, but in a balanced competitive game it has no place. Save the storyline stuff for storymode.
Actually, it’s a strong indicator of better skill overall, but that’s not always the case. To be more exact, it shows that the winning player handles the mirror matchup better. Players using the same character often have slightly different strengths and weaknesses handling certain matchups so it’s conceivable that the losing player may be able to handle most other matchups better.
Of course, it’s equally dangerous to fall the other extreme with the claim that certain mirror matchups (Honda, claw) aren’t a matter of skill but rather of luck (which may or may not be what the TC is alluding to). This is absolutely false. While these matches may be slightly more unpredictable, the better mirror player will still win out in every case. Too often, players who don’t have a strong gameplan (notably involving defense tactics) will assume randomness to be in play in mirror matches when in fact that randomness can be cloaked with a thick layer of strategy should one know the proper counter(s).
