Gen General Discussion Thread: Theory Fighter!

I was watching some videos today and came across a comment about Gen’s solid tools such as great pokes, anti-airs, walkspeed, mix-ups. kara throw, jumping angle and attacks, etc, all of which I agree are pretty good tools. In fact whenever I try new characters, I always get bored with them extremely fast and come back to Gen in no time. Most characters that I’ve tried feel so limited as compared to Gen. This made me wonder why still so few people play Gen? I haven’t tried many characters, so is there a glaring issue with Gen that wasn’t mentioned in the comment that makes him much less worthy of playing?
I have no idea. Maybe people consider him a character you have to be very good with or you are not allowed to play with him.
Or maybe what we feel as refreshing and fun others find tedious extra work.
Or maybe because he has little health and can’t shoot, also his dragon punch is no fire-and-forget one.
ok let me start listing them

1. He has 900 health and Stun.
2. He has low damage output except for super ultra
3. Heavily dependent on footsies
4. Has no viable easy wakeup option even with meter
5. He sucks at matchups with common characters like Honda, Guile, Deejay, Ryu, Ken, AKuma, Yun, Cammy

need I say more
I have posted a image way back that exactly explains why Gen is not often played:

Why bother when you can just play Fei?
So basically people just want an easy way out? It’s funny considering most people who play those common characters seem to think that they’re the most complicated and hardest character to play well. The funniest in particular are shoto players who think that way.
The problem lies with when u meet competent players especially in tournament. Take for example I attended a major yesterday in my country and these where my brackets

Bison
Honda
Guile
Ryu
Cammy
Dhalsim
Honda

Aside from the Bison and Ryu the rest was insanely difficult match ups for me. And though I finished third place I wonder how far I would have gone if I was using let’s say ehhmmm Cammy? Who bodies everyone one the above list for free? Or Akuma? I doubt if Xian or Amiyu gets in this kind of bracket if they will make it out of pools.

It’s how it is, every subforum will argue why their character sucks by virtue of their weaknesses and why it’s not easy to pick up __________ character at all. lol

@ugo did you post on the SF4 Philippines Facebook group during the downtime? At least, I think it was you posting the anti-Psycho Crusher vid. What a weird place to show up lol

Are there any Gen combos worth anything that aren’t 1f links? A friend of mine is trying to pick him up, but he lacks the execution to reliably (even plinking) hit them and, honestly, mine isn’t good enough to really offer much support other than hit, hit, block “dammit!” hit, hit, block “dammit!” hit, hit, blockdammit!!hit, hit, hit, hithithithit “okay so, yeah, that’s what it looks like.”

Should he drop the character because he won’t be able to do anything with him without being able to hit that 1f link, or is there something he can fall back on until he’s able to work up to that point?

Hey Ugo, how’re you doing? It’s been awhile. I think in the list you put up if “hard” matchups, I think Bison would be the only one that’s difficult; Bison can really really lame out Gen, especially with all his escapes, it’s hard to punish or even OS. The other characters, I can gladly give you tips on, I feel Dhalsim is, not free, but relatively easy for Gen. Let’s just say I’d probably pick Dhalsim as my first choice to play against on your list.

SENSEIIII!!! it has been loooooong, been feeling half lost and like a ronin without your guidance. where have you beeeeeeeen! are you on twitter? I have been good thanks to you, been placing top 8 consistently in all the tournaments and rankings. although I dont play much competitive gaming these days, I spend time in the lab just having fun with setups, like OS that shuts down 95% of bison options after a forward throw, meaty throw setups that beats reversal spd lol! Its nice seeing you again. Its really nice, watched your tournament match vs a blanka player. you still refuse to anti air lol! hahahahaaa, and I still play like 80% like you except that I am always having an itchy crHK crane trigger finger hahhaha.

If you’re talking about standing/crouching jab into hp>mk target combo, then I really think he should go into training room, and practice that bnb for a good hour. That’s only if he’s willing to put effort in learning Gen. Yeah sure Gen has other tools, but that target combo is his bnb, it’s so important. I don’t know how many Gens I play online that never do target combos, it’s so good plus it could lead into an untechable knockdown. Bottom line is, if your friend doesn’t want to put SOME effort into learning a character, he shouldn’t waste his time.

Hahaha, sup man. I’m actually not on Twitter. I’m on Facebook pretty often though. Good to hear you’ve been placing too! That tournament vs the Blanka was pretty interesting, I had to start in loser’s bracket because I came late xD But yes, I think my anti airs have slipped a lot. The problem I have is, when I focus too much on footsies, I forget about anti airs D: NCR is coming up this weekend in my hometown, I’ll definitely get far in the tournament, look out for me on the streams!

Quick question regarding gen’s bnb. When I plink the hp does it matter whether I use mp or mk? I feel as though mk and hp is more natural.

No.

L<M<H

LP+HK = HK
MK+HP = HP
LP+MK+HK = HK etc

I just want to come here to vent a little on how much I hate fighting against E.Honda.

Thanks for your time…

Hello sir, I have a couple tips for you:

 • If Honda does neutral jump fierce, your mantis c.hp can beat it clean; although you have to be careful, if he’s a really good honda, he’ll neutral jump fierce, move backwards in the air, and punish your whiffed normal, with a standing roundhouse.
 • I have an OS that beats a couple of his wake up options: After a forward throw, dash forward two times (make sure you’re in crane stance), neutral jump fierce and at the same time, input Crane ultra; This beats a couple of his options on wakeup, backdash, any headbutt, and light buttslam, medium/heavy/ex buttslam will whiff, but you’ve covered a lot of options.

Hope this helps, if anything else comes up, let me know and i’ll help you out, or if you have any footage and would like me to see, post it on my thread on “Weekly Analysis”

Thank you for the tips, I will try to use mantis c.hp on Honda’s neutral jump hp.

I am having trouble with the OS though. Is there a video to show exactly how this is done? If I time it so that Crane U1 comes out after landing, then it’ll whiff if Honda doesn’t do any ariel attacks. How does this work exactly?

Here is a recent match vs Honda. This guy was so happy that he went into hiding in arcade mode with fight requests turned off.

My apologies for the quality, I’ll record in a smaller resolution next time. Basically as you can see, I was absolutely clueless and looking like a total noob, lol. I will also post this on weekly analysis in case you prefer to make your comments there.

People who choose Gen as their main or one of their main characters know exactly what they are getting into- a high risk, low reward character… So Yes he is a very weak character in a lot of ways, but he is far from useless… You have to truly learn Gen- inside and out; and eventually come to the realization that you must have a incredible amount of Courage and fortitude to play with him successfully… Because at his best Gen in a sense “has nothing to lose”…

The lowest health, and stun in the game, the most complex move system of any character, not to mention he is projectile-less which dose not help; all create hurdles for Gen players to overcome that could easily be met with defeat… But here is the thing Gen has a very deep pool of fighting game mastery to be had because of how difficult and risky he is to use. Thus upon successful training and victories with Gen, this ultimately helps the player become a better Gen player; as well as a better player overall…

Not to mention- beating top tier characters with Gen feels so, so good…

Gen is 900 health and Stun, not the lowest. and he is not a weak character

Xian lost to Gamerbee in SEA Major :frowning:

Props to him for going all the way up to the GF. I was hoping he would st.MP whenever Gamerbee did a Jaguar Tooth.

crHP beats it clean as well
