Gen General Discussion Thread: Theory Fighter!

Any idea if there is a bonus to meter gain on counterhits?

i have no clue. street prolly knows

Is there any benefit of that combo to cr.lk, cr.lp, st.mp, cr.mp > hands other than the very slight range increase?

well if its additive, then its like this

Optimal damage bnb
cr.lk>cr.lp>st.hp>st.mk>lk.gekiro
20+20+60+40+100=240 or 24% of full bar

cr.lk>cr.lp>st.mp>st.mp>cr.mp>hp.hands
20+20+40+40+40+100 = 340/34% full bar
(Guessing 100 on hands gain)

st.mp>st.hp>st.mk>lk.gekiro
40+60+40+100=240…

I am just typing these out as something to check later as I cannot at the moment, I believe I will need some combos including stance change into jayesen, since I believe links with the most consecutive high strength links in the combo, which is why I am leaning towards the st.mpx2>st.mk/cr.mp>hands/gekiro type combos.
(If my memory serves me correctly, these combos dont yeild a full bar, maybe they do, I dont remember. I believe though if they dont maybe they are scaled the same way damage scales, 10% per hit after the first.)

With Gen I believe traditionally we would generate more meter overall with footsies landing hits with heavy attacks at range, but if I might suggest we could consider after testing utilizing more st.mp>st.mp action for meter.

I believe the key here is how we start the combo, we cant always begin with st.mp, but I do believe that we can use this more often by utilizing methods of staying close with safe jumps and meaty setups that leave us standing close. Its pretty clear we are meant to use st.mp for footsies, counterhits, converting into jayesen or crane cr.lk into ultra 1. I believe Capcom designed Gen with an intention* at the highest skill level just like any character, therefore as well represented as any attack is in ultra animations, such as ryu’s hadoken being also his U1 or Kens tatsu as his U2, consider again what Gens ultra 1 is, and how much we are meant to use it. And while I just countered my own argument to use footsies over combos, I believe with a tactical mindset, we can utilize both* footsies for meter gain, and the correct combos/links to provide us with the most resources (meter) to assassinate our opponent.

(All of this pending whether or not I actually find merit to the theory that some combos will yield better meter than others.)
(I always recommend using cr.hp for everything, lol)

I really wish they would make Oga travel to the first wall faster. God damn I want it so bad. Keep wasting EX meter to bail out of the corner in the Seth matchup. It’s been annoying me for ages now.

Just saw this.

No, there’s no bonus meter gain on CH. Meter gain scales just like damage and stun for most, except for the meter gain given for activating a special.

eg. Gekiro 1st hit gives 20 meter on activation, then 20 meter on hit.
combo - st.HP xx st.MK xx LK Gekiro
gives
40 + 40 + (20 + 20*0.8) = 116 meter.

At least that’s how I remember, and that is why you still get 10 meter when you whiff the last hit of MK/HK Gekiro.

Unlike most 2 hit normals that give 20 more meter when compared to its 1 hit counterpart (eg. Akuma’s st.HK gives 60+20=80 meter, while most roundhouse normals give 60 meter), Gen gains regular meter for 2 hit normals as well (st.HP gains 40+20=60 meter). Therefore, st.HP xx st.MK will give 40+40=80 meter.

Based on this, the combo meter gain will change:

Optimal damage bnb
cr.lk>cr.lp>st.hp>st.mk>lk.gekiro
20+20+400.8+400.7+20+200.6+50.5+50.4+50.3+50.2+50.1=139.5 (No idea how decimals would work out)
(Gekiro gains 20 meter on activation, 20 meter on the first hit, and 5 meter for each follow-up. MK/HK Gekiro gains 10 meter on activation of the last hit)

cr.lk>cr.lp>st.mp>st.mp>cr.mp>hp.hands (4 hits)
20+20+400.8+400.7+400.6+10+50.5+50.5+50.5+5*0.5=144
(Hands gain 10 meter on activation, and 5 meter per hit)

st.mp>st.hp>st.mk>lk.gekiro
40+40+400.8+20+200.7+50.6+50.5+50.4+50.3+5*0.2=156

thx for clearing that up

You guys ever do this? I swear I catch people with it ALL the time, and I mean good players too. After a backthrow, walk up, then crouch real quick and backup to make it look like a bait, then kara-back throw. It’s a fakeout of a fakeout, lulz. Does not work against rookies though, their reactions are too slow to think it’s a bait and they WILL probably dp or whatever your ‘fakeout’.

I get such a warm feeling when I finally get super. It’s just a total “Game on” moment knowing that I’ve shut down loads of his options and opened about 3 more for me.

I think I’m actually in love with Zan’ei. The resets, the damage, the ease of use. <3 <3 <3

yeah I know that feeling. like a “Yes! now your ass is mine lol!”

Would anyone be interested in joining a Gen Facebook group if I made one? It would make asking for advice a lot more efficient. If you’re uncomfortable with sharing your ID, it wouldn’t take long to cook up a “Fake” account.

mh, I don’t know, everybody uses Facebook? If other people use it more than they use this forum, it’s ok for me

Just a private group would be cool. I could contribute via mobile when im at work etc. It would be a lot more efficient, really.

No please don’t. I’m a facebook hermit and forums run out of stuff to read often enough as it is.

Anyone know where I can get the changing mask costume for Gen? I can’t find it :frowning:

it’s in the costume pack from Street Fighter IV (not Super)

Could you link me? I’ve been looking forever.

So, I got nothing to do and there’ll be a big wave of tournaments coming to my scene, including the 25 years of SF official which will be BIG, so I’m getting my labwork up to date, and damn man there’s still so much good shit to learn. I was watching the last pages of video thread and I’m still not using some really good tech from the Jap Gens we saw on nicovideo.

And there is still the infamous parry, I still think that if someone master that, and by master I’m not saying robotic use of it, but merely use it against meaties and character specific setups and such at will, it would be the end of this game lol.

I wonder how well a fully developed Gen could do at a Major. I wonder if it’s really even possible to fully master what we discovered so far with this character. Gen is so good lol, pitch this game got much worse BS (I’m looking at you, Akuma, Seth, Cammy…).

you need to buy vanilla SF4, go and buy the dlc, save the game profile with the dlc, pop in your AE and it will load the DLC into it

the parry aint my thing, but who I am I to complain.
