Gen General Discussion Thread: Theory Fighter!

yea i still loving playing gen and it still my best character becuse that all i played with in vanilla.

mostly working on honda trying to get his damn jab into hands, but my hand is stupid and slow. so im working his piano methoid.

still i bring the old man out once and awhile to have fun.

I never had problems using his kicks. I do feel a better difference. but I main to keep him balanced with the nerfs and buffs.

His st.mp Does have +8 frames on CH. It’s linkable with sweep and mantis cr.HP and stuffs.

imo, he certainly has all tools that most characters have (AA, poke, overhead, invincible crap, etc) along with unique ones as well (mantis super, crane cr.LK and st.HK comes to mind), but requires more success in mind games than other characters, since his combo efficiency that does not involve Super meter or Ultra meter is low compared to some other characters in terms of difficulty and situation after.

Btw, I think you’re talking about crane normals when you said “do not move his hitbox”. iirc, he moves forward during all standing and crouching MP and HP normals, increasing kara throw range (hell, you can use mantis cr.MP or cr.HP to make Dictator’s wake up EX head stomp whiff lol). Crane st.LK, st.MK, cr.LP, cr.LK, and cr.MK doesn’t move you forward at all afaik. My greedy wish was that his crane cr.MK was some kind of a slide. If devs were ‘brave’ enough to change his traditional (mantis-like jump from SF1) jump arc, they could give him a slide as well.

One of his mind game potentials: Crane’s LP chain is not a perfect block string (st.LP xx st.LP or st.LP xx cr.LP). The opponent can mash out SRK or some invincible stuff in between on block. At the same time, if they do not hold back during the chain, then they will get hit unlike most jab mashes, where the game engine automatically makes you block to the end. If you do st.LP xx cr.LP and the opponent blocks the first st.LP, if the opponent does not hold back or attempts anything not invincible or fails at command input, it’ll give you at least +3 frame advantage, and if the opponent blocks to the end, then the two are even.

But I’m still glad devs didn’t take away EX Oga’s throw and projectile invincibility, and the ability to go through opponents. I can still annoy jumpy opponents with EX Oga -> kick on their back if they don’t hit me out of start-up.

I still think one of the most unique features of SSF4 Gen is that he can be a completely different character depending on the player using him.

That was a mistranslation. They actually said Gen could combo into mantis U2 from mantis Super.

^^ Very nice info, man.
I guess I was wrong about having his normal not move his hitbox.
But I still believe you can punish whiff’d pokes with normals.

Gen has a very nice Kara-backthrow.
Although, his forward kara gives the advantage of a knockdown, and more time to set up anything you want.

I do agree that he relies more on mindgames.
I guess it’s that type of style that I like playing.
But then again, you’re right about how the character changes w/ the player =]

We should get some Gen training sessions on xbl & psn.
I should be on tonight once I complete a couple of papers I need to type up.

Anyone down for this? My XBL is BXCR, if you want to get some games in just send me a FR and just tag a message along with it so I know you’re from SRK. Or just drop your GT here and ill send the request.

I will be on PSN soon once I get my TE dual modded (my ps3 SE is shit and doesn’t work lol)

I’m down for some online sessions.
My XBL GT: PrietoBEAR

Hit me up, I might be available tonight.
Anyone else wanna play? FT5-10, whichever you’re more comfortable w/.

I need a way to get serial crossuppers of me.
I’ll try my luck with Crane S.HK and Crane C.MK later, but anyone got some science to share?

block and then back dash

tell you one thing gen vs gen is a blast to play. just played a few with fellowgenfu and i was show i have a lot to improve on but i knew that anyway. good games genfu

I loathe mirror matches unless its my Seth vs another Seth, because those matches are lightning quick with 30 hits combos usually haha.

should have seen the mirror match with mike ross and mr snk it was rather good match. you think a honda mirror match would be boring as hell.

got me a idea for a new avatar i can use so im going to see if i can get back into photoshop again.

So I’m running my Gen at a tournament in Halifax, NS, Canada on Saturday. I know I need to work on somethings, and some are hard to stop because they are old habits. Even though I’m top 20 on XBL I don’t think I’m the best Gen out there, I believe my Gen needs work.

anyone feel to just give some insight on things I’m doing wrong. Basically if you notice a spot where I could’ve Gekiro or Crane c.HK things like that. Or even when I blocked something and I didn’t punish correctly. I’m going over frame data for all new characters and refreshing old ones just so I know who and when I can punish. Cheers.

Well, I don’t know much, but there are a few thing I noticed. You like resets too much, I don’t think that’s a sound thing to go for against Ryu, who can SRK you out of anything. There were times were you could have won if you did Gekiro after M super but you went for reset instead.Another thing I saw that I myself do sometimes is using Oga near opponents, you’ll often get hit out of it before you reach the wall.
Just my two cents, hope it helped, and good luck at that tourney…

If anything, points don’t mean anything. And even if you were the best Gen out there, that doesn’t mean you need to stop working on your Gen. Everybody needs to work on their main in order to maintain their skill etc.

I have looked at some of your videos against Ryu (a common opponent) and made a small list of things I think can be done differently (this is just light criticism, don’t mean to be rude):

Ryu

I watched this one for reference.

  1. You like to backdash a lot which is fine in itself, but in a couple of your vs Ryu vids I’ve seen you backdash away multiple times when he has an ultra/super stocked. This is highly punishable with those and believe I learned that quickly when playing casuals with Gen at a tourney.

  2. You had your super ready and did mk hands yet you waited to do super, in a tournament always capitalize on damage oppertunities, otherwise you’ll end up like Marn did at Devastation 2010.

  3. In another vid of you vs Ryu I noticed you got very uncomfortable when you were in a corner, don’t be. Since Gen doesn’t have ex Oga invinc. anymore it might be a bit harder but Gen’s normals and footsies will definately help you out here. Never try to randomly jump, especially against characters that have DP obviously. Infact, I am of the opinion that Gen should be grounded pretty much all time unless you see a crossup oppertunity. I mean he has two decent anti-airs himself and some of the stuff in the shenanigans (footsies lol) thread will help a lot, even if you already know it all it can still help by reminding you and such.

Furthermore, have your combos down. Nothing is worse than attending a tourney and having your execution drop on you at a crucial moment. Especially as you’re likely to be nervous in a tourney mistakes are more likely to happen. Have a few combos in your head that you know you can do pretty much 100%. What is your punish combo? What is your general pressure combo? Simple things like that need to be (re)thought of before you step into the ring. What’s also very important is having all the basic matchup info by heart, knowing abit of framedata to know what is + on block etc.

Finally, the chances are your opponent will not expect a Gen player, so atleast you have the element of surprise with you. If you know the matchup info and what’s punishable, I doubt many people will know that same information of Gen (depending on what level tournament it is, at EVo people will know about Gen probably).

Good luck.

EDIT: that lk gekiro crossup Kokotsu showed us might be pretty handy actually. I would learn it as a gimmick, though it is character dependant.

usually vs Ryu’s I go for straight damage, it’s only vs scrubs or Charge characters. so if I did it in a video it’s because I was about to beat them.

War. thanks for insight. I’ve actually been watching my jumping a lot. Usually only jump in when they Hadouken.

There are some times when I look like I"m not punishing with super whether it’s mantis or crane super to punisha jump in. I lay my stick on my legs and when I wear certain pants or shorts my stick slides so I don’t get the full QCF, QCF motion. But thanks for pointing that out. I’ve been using Crane c.HK a lot and not Crouching as much. To bait in jump ins. I did notice a while back I dash back a lot, it was a big part of my game and worked well in Vanilla. Like I mentioned some of these things are bad habits and will take time, but hearing other people criticize me, will help I think.

As for the combos, I can land almost every link gen has Offline. It’s online that causes the problem. I can do into Hard Arcade(I know that doesn’t say much compared to real players) but I can land all combos 98% of the time. Especially s.MP s.MP s.MK. Online I’m just starting to get the hang of it. I’ve also been using Gen’s Over and Under head a lot. I’ve found the sweet spot I think, where I can back off but still be in range(most of the time). I have almost all match-up info off by heart, It’s the new characters. Which I’m studying now.

FYI I’m asking for criticism. I can take it with out thinking you are rude, but thanks for clarifying.

As for the points thing. I’m currently the highest Canadian Gen on XBL. But I don’t take the to heart, it’s a huge accomplishment and an honor, but I still want to act like my game has holes; and it does. I’m not top form.

Thanks for the insight.

Will they be streaming that? I’ll be watching if they are. I know you’ll do well in that tourney, so long as you can keep the tourney-nerves under control. I get tourney-nerves any time I play; it feels awesome, but it sucks for my game. :frowning:

I play better under pressure. I think that’s why I have so many matches where I lose the first round then come back and win the rest straight. I’ve always played better under pressure. I feed of it, I’m a goalie so I’m used to it.

Thanks though. I’ll post stream if there is one, they said they will try. I can’t promise top level play from everyone. So… fair warning.

Do please let us know how it went once you get back in.

gg

I didn’t do to well in the tournament because they had 3 booths. 2 projectors and 1 LCD TV. The projectors were delayed and I was dropping simple things like Crane j.MK Mantis s.MP because the timing was so off. I went 2-2 and was elim. But I played casuals vs all the players I lost to and others and went 19 straight wins on the LCD TV. Then we did our team of 4 from New Brunswick vs their select 4 from Nova Scotia and OCV’d them twice. I could’ve placed higher but I didn’t get one match on the damn TV was so annoying. But I still had fun.
