how many of you use EX hands. Ive been looking at a lot Gen vids and nobody uses it. When it leaves you at the perfect range to use EX hands and you can link to other goddies like sweep or another st.mk. Is that recomended or is opt for the FADC?
I tend to use it sometimes, but it I guess (for me) it mostly depends on the situation. If I have 1 meter bar and I feel like it could end the round or I want a knockdown (sweep) I’ll do it. You have so many choices, do you spent it on ex, do you wait for super to fill up, do you want to do an fadc combo? Your choice.
ok, so im gonna do something i rarely ever do. im gonna bitch. but not about gen, but my skill as gen. more specifically dealing with low level players who jump in all day. i really want to play gen, but if i cant fundamentally stop another low level player from jumping in, then i have no chance of evolving with this character.
my typical matches against mid to high lvl comp-they rarely jump. we play footsies, when they do jump, i anti air well enough to let them know that its a risk to jump at me. i play well more often then not
against xbl scrubs-they jump, i AA. they jump, i AA. then just when i think theyve seen enough AA to stay grounded, they lul me into thinking they wont jump, and they jump again. i say fuck it, crane stance for AA at all times. i poke with crane cr.mp into lvl 2 focus crumple.
for those who are successful online. what the fuck am i doing wrong? should i just stay in crane and only look to punnish jump ins? admittedly, im horrible at identifying scrubs until after i lose a round or 2, an i guess im a scrub for losing to them
i dont have this problem with fei because i can always late DP jumpers. i just cant seem to find a balance of effective ground offense, and anti air defense. fei long win pct-65. gen win pct-43. help me if you can
i need help developing a gameplan or general strategy around stance switching and being prepared to defend myself in neutral situations against jump ins, while at the same time being able to play solid footsies. i know gens AA options and the spacing for them, but i cant apply my knowledge at all. i really like gen, but im starting to think that he isnt right for me
FA more. The typical jumpy scrub gets destroyed by this and you can do it in either stance. Against high-class scrubs who mash srk or throw after a jump-in to beat your FA, you can usually show them your air superiority with your many air-to-air’s in either stance that clobber others’ jump-ins, even Ryu’s with good timing on their j.hk. instant j.hp in both stances works wonders in most situations.
EDIT; in the case of a Ryu j.hk spammer, I’m still working on the best air normal to beat this. His hurtbox is much higher than his hitbox so j.hp gets stuffed a lot. I’ve had moderate success with KKK j.lk and PPP j.hk, but honestly against these guys who spam it I usually just wait and bait and counter with a ground normal
Mantis cr. fierce is a good anti air… so is crane medium kick… Both rarely miss. Plus if They STAY jumping in on the hit crane super or Mantis U1/mantis Super. Fierce Gekiro is also a great anti air along with ex-gekiro (which beats nearly EVERYTHING). Lastly you can jump backwards with crane medium punch for jump-in’s as well you will beat it out on a regular basis. Basically no one should be able to jump-in on Gen without trading. WHat your problem is is that you are not being reactionary 2 your opponent you think a “good player” does xyz… this game is random and if you’re losing to monotonous jump-in’s on a regualar basis it’s just because you aren’t ready.
Think of Gen as the old kung fu master who beats fighter’s asses with a rolled up piece of newspaper he reacts and outpokes/counters them. Look for the counter and punish hard.
the thing is, i know that they are bad players. they do things to show me they are bad. they mash buttons at the first sign of pressure, do random unsafe specials for offense, mash throw to try to break throws, etc.
its not so much an issue of figuring out what they are doing, its more me trying to figure out how i can always be ready to beat it. as stated before, i know gens anti airs, so i dont really need to know what the tools are, i need to be aware of how to use them at optimum efficeincy.
is there are certain theory behind managing stances? how do you balance between gens offensive ground game, and still keep ready to react to jump ins? i can stop them all day while im anticipating, but when im reacting i feel like im at a disadvantage. for example when i watch the good japanese gens, they are constantly switching between stances while moving back and forth. what is the theory behind it all?
@ kruldar, ill try FA more as jump in defense. it opens me up to empty jump throw, but i guess i could adapt to the player im fighting. if they empty jump throw me, i’ll know not to use that. thanks
It’s a very tricky subject. Consider yeb and jibbo. Yeb stayed in mantis most of the time. His advice to all Gens on the very first vid interview: “stay in mantis”. Jibbo, even considering all the mk hands pwnage in vanilla, would use crane a lot more than yeb. Both enjoyed success at tournaments against some very solid players, yet both played him very differently.
Short version: it’s better to block a jump-in if you weren’t anticipating it than to try and quickly get in the right stance. i’d rather deal with mixup or eat a throw than try to AA something and whiff or get counter-hit because I was in the wrong stance and took too long/in too much blockstun to get to my active frames. late dp’s do not work well with Gen due to trades, slow startup, bad invincibility frames, and differing hitboxes on your gekiro’s: your best AA is almost always a ground or air normal. FA as AA will usually do the trick against those scrubs you’re describing though.
EDIT: removed tl;dr because it was OT. friggin alcohamohol rants. when you FA, remember to dash back after letting go, not forward. a lvl 1 FA as AA will leave you at disadvantage if you dash forward. If you get a stun or anything, even if you dashed back you can usually land a KKK c.hp, sometimes requiring a small step forward
i am the same way mike except i think your ground game is much more developed then mine. i can’t stand those people who just run away and hope like mad, hoping to jump in and get the one lucky shot. i try to be very calm when fighting these guys because they are really annoying.
fumy thing is i can handle pressure from rush down character really fine, but fuck i hate playing the game of catch me if you can.
not really a character just how some people play online in rank ssf4. i can beat them but damn it the most annoying thing, and if i lose i hate it because my game was not enough to beat that play style.
that why im not even going to play rank anymore on sf4, fighting 10 times in a row then finding one good person is not worth the trouble. even if it faster then waiting in a endless lobby, i am just not learning anything from fighting against them.
plus taking a break from ssf4 until arcade changes come out going to be playing sf2t on ggpo and hdr. i feel playing those games well help me out a lot more then training in super can.
Basically your approach in this game is to do whatever it takes to beat somebody. If that’s all anti-airs so be it. You have to learn to quickly realize your opponents weaknesses and tendencies. Don’t make this game into anything it’s not. There is no “right” way to play a character. There are only what a character is strong in and what they are weak in. You have to be able to turtle it out even if you’re playing a character like rufus, and vice versa. Footsies is about pressing buttons as it is about NOT pressing buttons.
part of my problem is that i play online to figure things out, and use it as a training aide more than i play online to win.
my next step as a player is to be able to evaluate my opponents skill level quicker. that way im not caught off gaurd when they do certain things, like repeat random jump ins or wake up ultra
thats not to say that a good player wont jump a lot or anything. i just need to be ready for whatever my opponents playstyle is
hnic mike you on psn?? add me we’ll get some game’s in Im curious to see how good you are. Im decent with about 1/4th the cast Maybe I can help you out.
hey good shit kruldar. lvl 1 focus backdash was just the anti scrub shit i was missing. i got my PP back up over 3k today winning around 60+% of my matches. most importantly, i didnt lose to a single sub par player. thanks
