Gen General Discussion Thread: Theory Fighter!

That’s the thing. Frametraps aren’t combos. Think of them as resets.

A reset with a sort of rock-paper-scissors mechanic:
If the opponent sticks out a jab or crouch tech, you hit him for a counter hit combo.
If the opponent blocks, no harm no foul usually, but in that case you should have thrown instead.
If the opponent busts out a reversal, you’re toast unless you baited it out.

they actually dont have to combo. its like the first hit is to get some frame advantage to “reduce” the startup of some other move like c.hp. after a c.lp youve got +2 frames so if your execution is godlike you can use c.hp right when yor advantage starts. c.hp has 7 frames startup but youve got an advantage of 2 so the hitbox gets active 5 frames later after your opponent is at 0. its like your c.hp got 5 frames of startup for him…so if he is trying to tech late a predicted throw (and you have a little bit of ol good luck at your side) he does the crouchtech input 2 frames before the hitbox of c.hp is active. crouchtech will most likely have about 3 frames of start up, but before the hitbox of his crouchtech is active you hit him with c.hp one frame before he can hit you…if he is not teching youll be at -5. for my personal taste its a little big too risky using anything with a startup beyond 7 and a fr.adv at block at -3…

my english is pretty rusty so hopefully it wasnt too confusing

basically what the guys above me said. they arent supposed to combo. you want to leave enough room for a crouch tech attempt to start, and counterhit them out of it.

like i said in my super long post, you are supposed to be baiting the crouch tech attempt.

you may be getting confused because in other games you frame trap by jailing your opponent in block stun. it dosent work that way in this game because of the auto block, so you have to have other ways of making your opponent leave the safety of auto block and leave enough room for them to stick a move out

hmmm

i sorta understand it. Im a hands on learner, so im gona try some if these frame traps in a match or maybe in training mode to get a feel of the timming.

Any of you guys have vids of using these traps?

cant show cuz ive got a 1 RLOD since last week

so awesome

Ya so I’m totally adding PPP c.LP, KKK c.LP, xx Roll to my arsenal. I’ve been using a lot more roll pressure and it’s been paying off.

Quality.

Finally ordered a stick in order to enjoy myself a little of MK hands as I can’t seem to do it for my pad-playing life (really frustrating since being able to do HP hands gave me unnecessary hope). If there’s any Gen player who went to stick after using pad for a long time, may I ask you how difficult it was with stick at first?

i actually struggled really hard for the better part of 6 months. my problem was that i kept switching whenever i felt like i shoulda won, but i lost because i wasnt comfortable on a stick. the only thing that got me over the hump was taking the buttons out of my fight pad so i couldnt switch as easily

you are going to suck for a while. except it. if you go to stick, stay with it, and you will get better

I transitioned form pad to stick during vanilla gen.

  1. stick (haha) with it, you may notice it already but a (quality) stick is much more responsive which will aid you greatly after getting comfortable with it.

  2. Before attempting to even play matches, try working on all of your combos in training mode, from both sides. Your execution will suck for about a week or two (that’s how long it took me atleast) but it will become better. So good infact, you will wonder why you ever played pad in the first place…

  3. Check out how your positioning your hands on the stick and buttons, I am going to assume you use the standard button config layout of top row 3 punch buttons, bottom row 3 kick buttons. Don’t grip your stick too tight, it’s is very lenient and gentle, the same will go for your buttons (depending on what stick you bought though). They will be very sensitive so make sure you don’t press them accidently while resting your hand on them.

  4. Welcome to the real fighting game experience :stuck_out_tongue:

Thank you for your opinions and tips.

I bought Hori FS3 (since it was the most decent one where my budget allowed), and I’m going to get it on Monday. If I don’t get a call for work I may be able to try it out for a few hours b4 I have to wait for another week xD. My only gripe may be the current budget didn’t allow me to buy a Mad Catz TE stick, but either one should be theoretically better than playing in pad if I’m used to it.

Madcatz TE have often literally 50% price cut with promo codes or give aways. this weekend is SOCAL and you can order less priced TEs aswell I bet. you should just check eventhubs occasionally or stuff. TE is a great stick. I can assure you that.

It is quite possibly the best stick available right out of the box.

I switched from pad to stick when I got VF5 a couple years ago. I’ve since used every kind of Hori and Madcatz stick with lots of different joysticks (sanwa jlf, seimitsu ls-32, and lots of others).

My advice is the same as above. You just have to stick with it. When you lose because you miskeyed a gekiro from the left side of the screen it’s really damned tempting to pick up the pad again. Do not ever do this.

It will seem really damned uncomfortable on your left hand for a while until you find a grip that’s both comfortable and precise. I went through about 3 different grips before settling on the one I use now. Learn the shortcuts for dp’s, qcf’s, etc. so you can perform moves just as easily from the left as you can from the right.

Yer gonna fuggin love Gen’ing with that stick once you get the hang of it. Good luck dude

I would have if $100 wasn’t out of my budget . I know most of my income for this month is going into repairs & buying auto parts. + Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood

Well, well. UPS “rescheduled” their delivery date to Tuesday. Looks like another two weeks w/o a stick.

lol finally picked up a glove. mk hands and ex hands are like butter now :lovin:

I made the transition to stick about a month and a half ago. All together I’m better now than I was with pad - even though there still are a lot I need to work on, I can also do stuff I couldn’t on pad. I’m still nowhere near a consistent mk hands though - but cr mp hands is pretty easy. Right now I can’t play online though, so I have plenty of time to sit around and work on execution in training mode. Still a long way to go, but I was scrubby with the xbox pad too… Not Nightwalker level by a long shot!

yea im still working on my execution with my te stick. im trying to get rid of my extra inputs i get when trying to dash. still damn te stick is loose as hell tho, im still surprise how i can barely move and get a dash to come out.
