Another difference is that target combos are set in stone, in alpha Gen could ‘freestyle’ with chains, doing all kinds of combinations and creating new interesting things and shennanigans.
Thanks for clearing that up! I knew what a chainable normal is, but “chains” sounded like it was something different.
Well, I have actually dabbled around with Guy some, and Ibuki just a little bit, but never seriously. I did know what target combos were, and how they work. I just don’t see how they are superior to links other than being easier. Seems redundant. Many people have wanted to see Gen get chains for a long while now. Are they sure that’s what they want? o.O
I’m just trying to understand how they are better, because my fear is that we’ve asked for the wrong thing. If a lot of our possible changes are focusing on chains or maybe even target combos, I worry that those changes wouldn’t really help us. That’s why I’m asking I guess. I suppose it really depends on the specifics of the chains or tc on the table though.
Other than being easier, you can connect normals in a way that it’ll never link (eg. Gen’s 2 TCs that are rumored to be included: s.HP -> s.MK, c.LK -> c.MK). Also, let’s assume something like s.MP -> s.HP was implemented as a TC; we wouldn’t have to worry much about making the first s.MP point blank hit, because most of the times it will connect fully no matter where we hit the first s.MP.
I used to want chains because I was too used to Alpha Gen, but I gave up after seeing Super Gen.
i was thinking something like. cr.lk, cr.lp, s.hpxxxst.mkxxxgiekro
It’ll really depend on what ability they give the target combos, i.e. some of dudleys target combos can only special cancels, while others can only super cancel. IMO if gen gets a target combo that can special cancel it means built-in block strings that can cancel into hands.
(Also for Andy, completed target combos may have different frame advantage and damage as a target combo versus a link)
