Gen beginners Thread ~ So you want to be an Assassin?

learn combos, safe jumps, mixups, defence, footsies then oga. thats all

Lk* and no, I stopped after 2 days.

hehehe, lol

once your hands on stick can do all you have in your mind, then switch to watching top or good Gen players play and learn from what works and avoid things that dont work

Yeah lol, I went onto trying other characters and kinda forgot about him. Been using Yang as of late. I’ve picked up most of the stuff I tried pretty fast. Watched video tutorials etc too. Even got a few Oga setups down. Dropping hands fadc combos though, either pressing them too late, or mashing cause I’m getting hands fadc hands lol. I’m working like a dog these next few weeks so hopefully I can just chill in training mode when I have time.

Ok done, my FADC was exactly too slow.

Lol love this character. The amount of times I landed super into ultra from normals/hands. He has really good pokes too, not sure why XBL Gens always jump 24/7.

Because they’re not really playing Gen. Staying on the ground and working footsies with mantis c.mp, c.hk, s.mp etc. is how he gets in vs a good opponent. Unless you make a read, aka Ryu throwing a fireball and you use crane jump to punish, a good opponent will destroy a jumpy Gen.

Yeah, they’re always the ones that complain about Gen being crap too lol. Coming from Bison (and recently Yang with his ass divekick), I don’t like leaving the ground unless it’s for a setup. So footsies work fine for me.

how tough is Gen to use?.. is he the hardest character to play?..

no he is not. just needs taking and getting used to

Ok, thanks… I was thinking about using him coz I wanted to practice footsies, pianoing and a charge character…

but he’s really got a huge library of moves…

he doesnt have a library of moves. think of it this way, most characters have close attacks and far attacks Gen doesnt, instead he has mantis stance and crane stance which is two different set of normals like every one else. Ryu has 3 specials Gen has 4 specials (2 per stance) That is all there is to it.

He is not difficult, just have plenty of setups to get used to. Mantis is for footsies crane is for damage and a little mixup here and there

MK xx HP hands (my input for hands is MP, HP and then LP, MP, HP)

most of the time, EX hands will come out rather than HP hands, caused by the last 2 punches being a plink. Does anyone have any tips or mental cues to prevent EX?

So his Mantis is for poking or footsies… and his Crane is for shenangians huh. thats cool… I have tried him and he’s pretty fine… I had a misconception that he’s a hard character to use coz my playmate told me that Gen is the most difficult character…

I have tried piaoning his Mantis cr.mp to his hyakurenko… by pressing cr.mp, lp, lp, mp, hp…

I noticed that if you press it too fast, it plinks and the EX will come out… there’s a certain speed of pressing the buttons which will make
H hyakurenko come out… the speed of pressing them is slower as compared to plinking.

TAP PUNCH

This is Gen’s go to combo special attack in Mantis Style, allowing him to combo from Standing Medium Punch and other normal attacks.

slowing down while being fast enough to cancel into hands is tough to build muscle memory upon. ill keep practicing that

EDIT: for cr.MP xx HP hands, I can prevent myself from plinking by going MP HP and then MP LP HP. Works good so far

I find it much more easyer to do HP hands, on a stick, like this:
(cr)mp lp mp lp hp

Or Ex:
mp lp mp lp mp+hp

For anti airs, cHP comes out in 7 frames, crane cHK in 5 frames and EX gekiro in 7 frames… sHP first hit comes out in 5 frames, but how long does the second hit (which is used as the anti air) take?

Which anti air is best for neutral jumps? It seems due to hitboxes and the way Gen shifts during neutral jumps the only AA here is EX gekiro (or maybe I can get sHP to trade if I am lucky / they use a terrible NJ move?) Or can I get away with something like hard gekiro in this situation?

Theory fighting a little here, any input much appreciated!

what some good frametrap strings to use?
