Garou: MOTW Thread

My friend and I were arguing over which version of MotW to play, and upon the advice of Nocturnal (and a few others) I said it should be the PS2 version, but he’s dead set against it because of the way the rom allows him to cancel / link c.b, c.b into super, mentioning that it doesn’t feel right on the PS2. Is there any flat out proof to make him SHUT UP that the PS2 is the console we should be playing it on?

It depends on which rom your friend plays. If he plays set 1 or 2, then he’s right, those are the closest versions to the original MVS version. We had a little test here in SoCal at one of our meets, and each of us came up with our own opinions. Mine are: The PS2 version is good if you don’t want to get the Neo Geo version or play the rom, but, if you’re used to the timing on the Neo Geo, its best not to get used to the PS2. it took me a while to adjust to it, some of the links, cancels, breaks and feitns chains felt akward on the PS2 version. And that GC thing doesn’t bother me since you should be able to tell when someone does a GC.

A+B breaks certian specials with each character, everyone except Kain and Hoku have 1 move they can break.

You’re right on the A+B and d+A+B attacks, but you need to remember that some characters don’t leave the ground, and their overhead doesn’t get as much invin than other characters.

Another stupid question, B. Jenet’s feint’s are down and A+C right? Do all her normals cancel?

Also, does she really have any combos worth noting with her feints, or is it simply used for guard string purposes?

Theyre two kanji symbols, representing one word or idea. The first one translates to hunger or thirst, the second one is wolf. Together, they are a single word, roughly translated to ‘hungry wolf’, but I think ‘dire wolf’ would be more accurate in English. As a word, its pronounced just like we’ve been saying ‘garou’ (guh-row) all along. Funny enough, ‘garou’ is exactly how its spelled in romaji.

Every character has two feints, f+AB, and d+AB.
AFAIK, every normal move that can cancel into a special or super can cancel into a feint. That is damn near all of them with B. Jenet. Ignoring chains like A>A>A, C>C, and D>A, all of her normal can be canceled except: sc.D (first hit can cancel, second cannot), j.C (first hit can cancel, second cannot), standing far C, crouching D. standing far D can cancel, but only if its blocked or JD’ed.

sc.D can be feint canceled on the first hit, so [sc.D (fient) dash]xN can be a mean pressure string, and if it connects, reacting after the feint with a c.C xx qcf+D should be easy. I see a lot of the Jenet’s on the Howard Arena vids use sc.C or sc.D (feint) d+AB xx punch super pretty frequently.

You probably know it already, but for Jenet, keep it in the front of your mind that you can cancel into her air kicks (d+K, K, K) from all of these: backdash(!!), AB, and any air attack. If you know already, cool, but if not, you HAVE to incorporate these into your play.

If you can’t get a hold of NeoGeo AES/MVS version of Garou then the PS2 version would be your next choice for practicing with friends. Though like Giby already explain the timings for certain things are different so its all mainly getting adjusted to it. I have all versions of Garou myself and don’t really mind playing on any of them. Then again if I had to pick one it would have to be the MVS arcade version of course. Is your friend using a stick or pad?..cause those PS2 pads are a pain to pull supers on sometimes. Take care.

I agree with you on that last part Giby, but the 2nd list is a hit-and-miss. I agree that Hokutomaru & Tizoc are at the pit & maybe Freeman as well, but Rock?! Woah O_o. Gonna try and make my own and post it here. Thanks!

The second list looks better than the first. Hotaru looks a bit high, Rock kinda low but otherwise, it looks fine.

I’m thinking that first list is something a person made up to get some attention, but it didn’t seem to work since everyone thinks he’s an idiot and his thread got deleted from more than 1 forum. The second list was posted about a year or 2 ago, and it’s the list people say is close to what they feel.

Garou doesn’t need a tier list ha…every character has a chance of winning…no one character is god tier or anything like that. Some characters yes do have a lot more combo options and what not but that doesn’t mean they are unbeatable. Garou is all about how well you know your character and your match ups. After playing this game for so long I know for a fact that its all about skill and not just picking a characer that is suppose to be top. Take care.

Yeah I second you Nocturnal, but still to me Tiers are just ‘General Knowledge’. Plus one of the best things about Garou is that it’s one of the MOST balanced 2D fighters yet.
