I just realized this emulator service that you pay for known as GameTap (www.gametap.com) has a online matching system. It also has every single CPS2 game…
Does anybody know if the online service on GameTap is lag free? any input would be greatly appreciated.
I signed up for it, to check it out. $9.95 for two months, on there current special deal. I have been somewhat frustrated with it thus far, as their interface is somewhat confusing, game downloads are extremely buggy (I could write a whole paragraph on this), and their controller support is miserable. Smart Joy Plus is not supported, and according to their FAQ, will never be supported (for those of you out there like me). I got a USB gamepad that I have working, and played a CE game by myself, which was very good, in terms of playability. Only one hiccup I noticed during the 4 or 5 matches I had against the computer (and yes, all games do go through their servers).
I haven’t devoted much time into finding a match yet, but playability looks promising…and I’m now starting to think about hacking my USB pad’s PCB into my stick.
I’ve never used gametap or been to the site, but I wonder why people would use gametap when 90% of the games they host can be played on emulators for free. Not to mention that kaillera supports online play for nearly every console system that gametap uses.
fatherbrain here. comp died, so I’ve been on a lot less… anyway, I’ve tried Gametap. Didn’t like it at all… The frameskip is horrid online. cOULDN’T EVEN GET OUT A SINGLE SPECIAL IN THE DARKSTALKERS GAMES i PLAYED ONLINE. aLSO, THE FRAMESKIP is so bad that you can’t even see jabs…avoid it
Despite all the internet lobbying, a product that is commercial, legal, and simple to use is leagues better than any emulator we have… not really for srk, but for the 99.9% of people that aren’t on srk. Technically everyone could have played ST for years too, but it’s no coincidence that it’s popularity jumped every time it was released on console.
If a company has a license to an electronic, pc version of CPS2 games, every LAN cafe becomes a potential tournament setting IF you can arrange for a license. Considering gametap ran tournamentts at DL, i’m sure companies like that are open to other things too. and LAG FREEEEEEE
Sounds a lot better than looking for 20 ps2’s and crt tvs and copies of the game. A lot of people could run things in their area if this became a reality.
I messed around with gametap a while back, when they were doing the two week trial and the commercials had just come out on adult swim. I don’t think there was netplay at the time. It wasn’t too bad, but yeah, for those who are a smidgen savvy there isn’t too much need of it. If the netplay ends up tight though that would be pretty nice.
The only problem I had at the time was that a lot of the platforms they picked for their games were wtf. Like they had the game gear 2d version of virtua fighter 2. I’m sure by now most of this has changed.
