Hereâs the thing - if you make the statement that sexy images of females affect males in a negative way, you damn well better have some solid proof. *Especially *if you are going to start demanding that game developers change their practices to accommodate your views and lambaste any developers who dare to make female characters who are appealing to the demographic that is at least 7 times larger than the demographic begging for changes.
ReoGeo already posted that article that said that women were affected no more negatively seeing attractive females on Scrubs than they were seeing more realistic females on Rosanne. Thatâs research there. Research that found that media depictions have no negative affect on females. Now, itâs not the best idea to just assume that males would be affected the exact same way, but I think itâs better to assume something based of a similar study than it is to assume something based off* fucking nothing* but your gut feelings.
Which brings us back to gaming journalists. Weâve had TONS of stories from these fucking journalists that say female sexuality in games is making men sexist, that military shooters are making people not take real war seriously, that killing fucking dragons is of a real fucking ethical concern - yet NOT A GOD DAMN BIT OF RESEARCH TO BACK ANY OF THIS UP! NOTHING! NOT A STUDY! NOT A SURVEY! NOT EVEN INTERVIEWS WITH PEOPLE OFF THE GOD DAMN STREET!
They are just making a claim, presenting it as truth, based off a god damn FEELING. This isnât fucking journalism. It isnât even yellow journalism. Itâs brown journalism. Itâs barely fit to print on toilet paper.
I firmly believe that these âSocial Justiceâ journalists donât believe most the shit they write. I firmly believe they are only doing it for the clicks.
Its all bullshit Critical Theory: which is about doing academic bitching and never offering a solution. They found a way to make money with it by using the Indie Game Fest as a way to advertise games, but for the most part they will constantly bitch because thatâs what they are supposed to do.
When I started reading about how games were sexist, my first thought was âwow, people really ARE pissed off they didnât add any female characters for Ultimate MarvelâŚâ
Um, yeahâŚAnyway, Iâve been following the Gamergate thing since the 10 or so âdeath of gamerâ articles popped up and Iâve been constantly annoyed how the mainstream gaming press is trying to spin it as gamers attacking women. Weâre pissed off at the journalists that sparked a consumer revolt by trying to dismiss their audience and frankly, we either want them to apologize or be fired (men or womenâŚironically, most of the problem children are men). Unfortunately, too many people are either ignorant or stupid to get through the SJW narrative and see that.
Happy to see an unmolested SRK thread dedicated to discussing the topic. Even happier that most of the people here arenât buying the SJW narrative, which is a welcome sight. I was annoyed a few years ago when they tried to spin the whole FGC as misogynists because of Marnâs antics and the SF X Tekken thing. Two incidents and you want to lynch everyone in the community? Get the fuck out of here.
Eh, after last page, you dudes are so fucking far away from addressing any of the real issues its laughable. I said more to address part of the real issues last page than Sennin actually did.
The real issue is a combination of a gross misuse of social research, really crazy far left thought in universities, the weird way in which Feminism gets to live in academia, the way gatekeepers work in video game journalism, and some issues which video games and comics that people donât want to admit they have. It would take a minute to explain how is it that we got to #Gamergate and people are just gonna TL;DR it anyway so there you go.
As was previously stated, the real problems are the incestuous relationships between video game journalists, both with themselves and with the developers/publishers and how unethical some of their practices.
This leads to situations where they can:
give good coverage based on those who curry their favor (i.e. are sleeping with)
use their position to direct discussion about video games towards their own agendas
censor any dissenting speech
The whole SJW/feminism thing is just a symptom of these problems. The real issue is the lack of ethics from these so called journalists who are using their power promote this agenda instead of being fair and unbiased.
I definitely agree with this. If you get rid of the âjournalistsâ, the ones who control the narrative and twist it to their needs, you will likely get rid of all the other crap thatâs ruining the hobby as well.
And by âget rid ofâ, I simply mean âmake irrelevant.â Youâll never get rid of this crap, but you can at least make it so that it gets laughed off the same way Jack Thompson, Hilary Clinton and Joseph Lieberman get laughed off when they go on about games.
The problem is that they shouldnât be. It doesnât have ti be the whole SJW/Feminist thing, it could be any other agenda. The point is that as journalists, they have a duty to be unbiased and not just act as mouthpieces for that agenda.
I think the issue is mainly a combination between the unethical landscape of modern gaming journalism and tbe recent infiltration of dogmatic feminism. It isnât like the terms"patriarchy".âCIS white maleâ, and "male privilege"just suddenly materialized a few weeks ago these have been concepts floating around in the halls of feminist discourse for decades.
There canât be an issue of ethics if there werenât ethics in the first place. Youâre under the assumption that they were writing journalism, which they obviously werenât. People are defending Sarkeesian and the other âgame journalistsâ in ways half the thread doesnât even understand.
The SJW only have power because the journalists gave them a megaphone.
I mean, honestly, if it werenât for Kotaku, Polygon, and the rest of the GameJournoPros, would any of this shit be happening right now? From the corruption in gaming to the infiltration of agenda pushers?
The thing is, itâs a broad sweeping problem. Itâs not just gaming journalism or comics. I know Iâm stating the obvious of this, but you know full well that mainstream mass news media canât trip over themselves fast enough to put their spin on current events or try to sway voters in the direction they want to them go (lest we forget how they completely laughed off Ron Paulâs presence at the Iowa caucuses last primary).
Right now, US news is veering towards being indistinguishable from the KCNA in some aspects. I donât think itâs the only one, I can see certain aspects of British news being similar, canât comment on other countries. But I donât like the course of reporting anymore from any media.
Yes, obviously we care about journalistic integrity in gaming, but GamerGate is the tip of not even an iceberg, but a glacier. When a large amount of news centers and journalists are using their articles as not just to relay the facts, but to give their opinions on the matter like itâs some kind of blog post and now every journalist is now a opinion editorial writer. Shoot, I can barely even read NHL articles, or any sports articles for that matter, without the writer giving me their two cents about the players. Even recaps of games can suffer from this now.
I honestly feel it all started as a matter of money.
These agenda pushers start shit wars in comment sections. That brings in views. People talk about the site outside of the site itself. Articles get linked. Etc. I feel it was all about money in the beginning. They hired these writers just to stir up shit and get ad revenue. They gave them a megaphone because the idiots on the megaphone were bringing in a crowd.
Speaking primarily about Kotaku because I actually followed them for a while before they made FGC out to be the boogie man. I mean, they were a site that didnât have prolific reviewers because they didnât care about the byline (as is obvious by how they have no standards in who they hire, apparently), so this is what they had to do.
Again, itâs a matter of journalistic integrity. If youâre a journalist, no matter what your political affiliations and beliefs are, youâre supposed to shut those out.
If the issue of ethics isnât addressed, then it doesnât matter what the agenda is. Even if the SJWs/Feminists are shut out, not addressing the ethics issue means that any other agenda can just sneak in and use âjournalismâ as their soapbox.
Then again, I get the feeling that a good number of the people here wouldnât mind another agenda coming in as long as it fit their political views.
