Preface: This all started because Sennin was acting like the artwork didnât matter. I mentioned that the content of characters get lost because of artwork and he acted like it didnât. If I was lying, people wouldnât still be holding on to how Lara Croft looked originally. For better or worse, the presentation of characters matters to a lot of people. Love novels are kind of in the same boat. Doesnât matter if itâs the best book ever, there are gonna be a lot of people who look at the cover with the shirtless dudes and give it a pass regardless of its literary merit. This happens with fighting games too. There are a lot of people who refuse to play it solely because the cast is all girls. The issue the videogame industry has is: how much does it matter? Is it worth risking millions of dollars and hundreds of hours on a project when a female lead could jeopardize sales. Iâve said before that I wanted a couple more female characters because theyâre good promo for the hobby. Little girls wanna look up to big girls. While this is something that I would like to see, this isnât something that anybody needs to be forced to do. Radfem/SJWs not understanding companies donât want to risk millions of dollars on something that isnât sure is just them being dumb as all fuck. There arenât more female leads for practical reasons rather than insidious ones. It is lamentable but it sure as fuck isnât my millions of dollars on the line. Ultimately looks matter, they may not matter to you, but it does to a lot of people.
I didnât reply quickly because I havenât been too sure on how to approach this. Iâve written about this multiple times in multiple ways and the same people whoâve agreed with it have disagreed with it in other times. I can only assume we have a lot more tards than general anticipated.
The thing about this games that have sexual imagery is that they limit the places where you can have any part of it. Workplaces and school are the most obvious one of these. After many years of various things, the sex appeal or perceived sex appeal of the characters can make people uncomfortable. In the case of a workplace, looking at the wrong couple of frames when a panty shot is flying is probably enough for a complaint. You may or may not get fired depending on the HR department, previous history etc, but itâll be enough to get in you trouble. Contrary to popular belief, not everything gets you fired. Thereâs a lot you can do that wonât get you fired. Once you start on something that can be perceived as sexual, you really start flirting with danger.
Schools are similar as the workplace. Things are a little bit wonkier because you have a lot of personalities when it comes to the students, their parents, other teachers and then the administration for said campus. This is where things can get really dumb because, just like it was with us, crazy games are popular with kids too. Parents buy their kids things with higher ratings all the time. You have kids talking about how they love Mortal Kombat and Call of Duty and then you have a real innocent question like: Hey Mr, do you play games? Yeah I do. âWhat kind of games do you like?â Iâm not really huge on first person shooters, so while theyâre in vogue, they wonât get me in trouble. Tell them I like fighting games and they usually ask âDo you play Mortal Kombat?â Do I mention Guilty Gear? Iâve done it once and I immediately realized that Iâd done goofed. Because if that kid goes home to look that up, and if by chance he gets caught by his mom, there is a chance that either Elpheltâs titties or I-Noâs everything might get me in trouble. Other games have a higher likelihood of this happening: TTT2 very small, SF has Cammyâs ass in a thong but maybe its not too bad, SCV has Ivy but her outfits are a lot more moderate (SC4 Ivy is lol no though), SG has a lot of panty shotsâŚlike a lot and DoA can only get mentioned if I really feel like losing my job.
This is lamentable but thatâs just how it goes. Mind you, we have to do this for everything. Music, movies, books, tv shows etc. When I was working as a librarian, I liked playing music in the mornings to make it more inviting. I quickly found unsafe for work a lot of my stuff is. Some artists are sort of safe (theyâll have one or two songs that you need to skip) others are obvious no fly zones. It may sound retarded as all hell, but I canât play You Shook Me all Night long by AC/DC. What are you gonna do if a kid asks you what a âsex machineâ is? Apply that to games. This isnât about me, this is about trying to figure out if: 1) Could this be deemed risky and 2) is it worth the hassle? Now look back at the Asuka example. That small bit, as insignificant as it looks, makes a huge difference.
The ESRB thing matters a lot less because whether or not the rating is at an appropriate age will never be the issue. The issue will always be whether or not somebody got bothered by it and complained. The kid may wanna talk to me about the game but I shouldnât discuss it based on the content. In the case of fighting games, a lot of them have a T rating with some going into M. Obviously M is out of the question. The new KI doesnât have anything too grisly from what I remember, but its M anyway. The Ts are more mixed with their content as far as outfits go. I sub a lot at middle schools, and even though I have 13 and 14 year olds and those games are age appropriate, do I risk it? For all I know I could be showing kids some games they would love but an outfit here, a curse word there, and suddenly things are out of reach.
At the end of the day, game devs have a lot of concept sketches made and choose one. As inconsequential that choice may be, it has some ramifications down the line. How much this affects is based on what your life is about. Iâm probably going to get certified and become a full fledged teacher. If I do, Iâd love to start a fighting game club because, with proper instruction, I bet kids would love this game if they had proper exposure to them. How many safe choices do I have? I love Soul Calibur. As much as I love it, is it worth risking having a parent complain about Ivy?
So thatâs the long and short of it. If youâre still in the camp of âOh its because Pertho is a prudeâ well then I hope you drink some bleach. If you want to act like Iâm making bullshit up, drink some bleach with the other guy too. None of this is my opinion, this is all based on things will play out given the current school climate and current sexual harassment nonsense. Afterwards ponder then that people inside of SRK did not wanna play AH because of all the little girls and same shit with Skullgirls. So it isnât that Iâm making shit up, is that these companies lost sales based on artwork alone.
But but but âmuh comic booksâ. Things are different when parents allow the kids to have them. I canât assume/hope that kids will find things acceptable any more than you can do the same for coworkers.
Iâve worked a retail job that was primarily involved with selling video games (Iâm sure you know exactly what outlet that is if you live in the US) for about 3 years and Iâve worked a retail job that sold electronics of all types for about another 4 years.
Gamers? Like, real gamers that have games as their primary life passion? Donât really care about there being a female on the cover. Hell, the game could have nothing on the cover, they know what theyâre coming to buy.
Casuals? The people that buy the latest Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty and 2K game and think thatâs the extent of gaming? The people you deal with more at the general electronics store and donât even know there are stores that sell specifically games? Wouldnât be caught dead with a game where they know or even think you might be playing a female character. One of the guys I worked with there even said that he wanted to play Tomb Raider, but only if he could play as a dude. As much as he plays GTAV and talks about it all the time, gaming wasnât his primary life passion. (His passion was creating shitty ass rap âmix-tapesâ and filling up my god damn Facebook feed with it, convinced he was going to âmake it big.â)
If you want those GTA sales numbers, you gotta play ball with the people who only want to play with people who have balls. I donât like it, I was one of the first to come out as disliking changes to games like Bioshock Infinite, Last of Us and Sleeping Dogs that went out of their way to downplay the female characters (though my personal reasons for disliking it had nothing to do with gender politics and everything to do with artistic freedom of expression) but corps arenât doing this shit because theyâre evil - the only thing that matters to them is the almighty dollar.
Iâll repeat this for the last timeâŚpertho we get that you donât like sexualized imagery and we get that you donât want to expose your students/friends/co-workers/kids to it. This is well within your right to do so and I wonât argue your decision because ultimately itâs your own preference. However as Iâve said nunerous times already the fact that itâs a problem for you does not in itself mean itâs a actual problem. There is no inherent value in your preferences that elevate it above and beyond the rest of us so quite simply put there is no "problem"to games like DOA and SGs because they bother you. This is the reason why I compared you to anita because much like you, she qualifies games as "problematic trends of sexism"off nothing more then her own preferences. If she declares a game sexist itâs sexist for no other reason because she thinks it is.
I would never force you to enjoy media you donât like and I would never try to enforce my values to other people. I simply ask for the same show of respect so If you donât like ivy, donât like DOA, donât like cammy and generally just all things sexual then quite simply put just donât look at them. However like with the spider-woman variant cover, the instant your beliefs become the basis of what informs bans and censorshipâŚwe will have problems.
My brother is one these people. Back in the day when we both played Resident Evil 1 & 2 he never did the Jill and Claire scenarios. His reason believing itâs bullshit for girls to survive a zombie Apocalypse on their own. He completely passed over RE3 due to Jill being the only playable character. I never understood as he was a big fan of Tomb Raider.
Iâm sorry Ash, one day youâll understand what life is when you can look at multiple points of views, understand how they come to their respective conclusions and work out proper resolutions to problems.
Thatâs not the issue here. Itâs fine to look at other peoples POV but that doesnât mean I gotta start burning books because you donât like it. As I said itâs all about respecting other peopleâs choices.
Except thatâs not remotely close to what I wrote about in application or anything else. Youâre so fucking dumb that when I explain how these creative decisions play out in certain situations, you sit around crying about it.
The gist of your rant is that"hey not everyone will like this so plz think about the children."I have a better solutionâŚif you donât like it then just donât play it.
Itâs a easy solutionâŚno one is forcing you to play these games so just donât. I donât mind if you think theyâre a problem but I do mind if they get pulled out of stores or censored because of it. Respect artistic freedom and other peopleâs preferences.
My brother is as hood as they come. Much of his logic is flawed. I did ask him how he can play Tomb Raider which had a female character taking down wild life, mystic creatures, dinosaurs and a fucking dragon but zombies are out of a femaleâs league? He just told me to shut the fuck up. Iâm just gonna sum it up that RE gave him the choice of a male character while TR didnât.
Not being able to recommend things to certain people because of the content is just part of life.
Having games turn into bland inoffensive to anybody porridge-with-nothing-in-it would be boring as fuck.
Enjoy whatever you like in private and recommend whatever you feel is appropriate to recommend in public, just donât throw a fit when the two donât always overlap.
eg. I enjoy the Boondocks but I wonât be recommending it at work because it can be offensive as fuck, but you donât see me with this massive fucking chip on my shoulder being so fucking indignant that it is and wanting it changed so that it can be recommended to everyone because then it wouldnât be the same fucking show anymore.
I run a local anime club, since its been under a church and in a villiage hall where anybody can go, there are some series we canât really risk showing because of content even if a few members are singing their praises, that doesnât mean they shouldnât exist as they are, it just means we keep our sensible heads on and screen something else instead and the members watching those series keep watching them on their own or together in private gatherings.
Non-problem solved.
Shit that had nothing to do with journalism but I figure its worth eating an infraction to say if it happens, this is my only input on that particular spat as it isnât going to go anywhere.
Still on topic to a degree since the narrative is trying to claim we need to change games entirely because of all the âproblemsâ in it. The Gamers are Dead blogs touched on it, that game developers donât need to make games for evil cis white males and itâs time to change the audience. Or something. Basically boiling down to âwe donât like these gamesâ representations, so you need to make ones we do like or else we wonât cover you anymore!â
