Game with the Best Sprites?

I was watching the Skullgirls preview earlier in HD and really noticed just how gorgeous the animation is in that game thus far, and it got me thinking about other games with really well drawn sprites.

So it inspired me to make this thread asking everyone, just what game do you all think has the best sprites of all time?

EDIT: Feel free to judge by character design or the actual detail and appearance of the sprites, depending on how you interpret this.

Blazblue has the best looking sprites. But the best lsprites of all time goes to Melty Blood.

Survival Arts, so lifelike.

Kof 12

I always liked the KOF series’ unique sprite style,
but that’s more of a personal preference than anything.

Blazblue animated like shit. King of Fighters animates a hell of a lot better then it. Same with Guilty Gear.

I think HnK and SBX have some of the best sprites from last generation. The animation’s a bit choppy at times (typical of ASW) but the games move so fast you can barely even see it. It’s the large and colourful sprites I like, so much different to GGXX’s slimmer style, a real treat on the eyes.

If it’s animation you’re looking for, 3S all the way…

The best animated fighting game in history.

always loved the way 3s looked

in how pretty the overall game is id say KOF13

in movesets id say MvC2

when your game depends on cancels that are frame specific and the speed of your games is like twice of other games, you wouldnt saturate it with needless frames
also BB and GG have good animations, between the standard frame count of any work on animation, now if you compare it with 3s and kofxii/xiii who have a large amount of frames per move (sometimes unnecesarily) then yeah you can notice the diference, of course when your chars only have like 3 specials that are recycled(3s) compared to 10+ moves(GG) its easy to see why they make so much effort to animate it so much in order to set them apart from other games, plus the game running more slower makes it necesary in order to the animations to look smooth, if they used the standard frame count the game would look cluncky

I’d say Alpha and Darkstalkers, and CPS2 Marvel games.

All the frames look perfect, even in-between frames. There are literally no “ugly” frames to pause on. Then Marvel and DS takes the animation to another level. Look at all of Wolverine’s animation in say COTA, MSH, or XSF. Look at Cyclop’s forward walk in COTA or XSF.

I can’t say BB, or GG or most random 2DK games because the animation just doesn’t match up. I can’t speak on KOF 13, havent seen it IRL.

So, I’d go with CPS2 16-color sprites and SF3 sprites. Just give any of those a vector trace for HD visuals, and you’d have visual perfection.

Garou: Mark of the Wolves

Beautiful game.

Waku Waku 7

super street fighter 4

I don’t feel like choosing only one game or even put 3 on hierarchy, so i’m gonna say: Garou, Alpha and GG. That is, avoiding any considerations about the animation part.
I didn’t choose KOFXII/I instead of Garou for mere design matters (and things like “dino Yuri”, Iori’s costume, Ryo’s standard colors, etc); the same reason why i didn’t choose 3S instead of Alpha: i don’t like the Ryu and Akuma of that game, their colors, faces, and some moves. (like their kicks and their tatsus – don’t mistake these with “animations”)

Third Strike with a bullet, but Guilty Gear is a close second.

Third strike, hands down! Such a pretty game…

Blazblue and Guilty gear are great looking games too though, and Skullgirls of course, can’t wait!

In my opinion, the Alpha games.

They had such character. Every time I think of any Street Fighter character, I think of their Alpha portrayal. ESPECIALLY Sagat. Fucking beastly.
