Gainesville Thread: UF Wednesday Night Fights, 18:30 - 22:00, Little Hall 221

We meet every wednesday night until the 16th for ranbats. Money matches are your best bet if you’re looking for cash.

u have family ?

No. You caught me lol

I’ll money match you in marvel if you promise to use chun li, hsein ko, and viewtiful joe. No xfactor allowed. On pad. Blindfolded. CAN YOU HANDLE IT?

You niggas best come out to this.

We’ll see.

So for some reason the facebook group is being really dumb so I’ll just post here. Phil asked me what kind of things to look out for when he tries to run tournaments in Gainesville. The two main problems for this city are equipment and venue:

In regards to the issue of equipment:

  • Gainesville is a…. young community you could say. Its very small and those willing to contribute to running a successful tournament (at least in the past) has been even smaller…. so getting all the necessary equipment can be a hassle. At the gator gaming tournament in august we had 35+ people for both AE and marvel and lots of people helped out in a big way. We were lucky to have 5 lagless setups (my asus & crt, pat’s asus, adam’s asus, kevin gershkoff’s asus) and matt’s monitor was better than nothing. Also shout-outs to dave for loaning his system and games.

You might remember that the marvel tournament ran slow as shit since we only had 3 discs. This could change once umvc3 drops, but you never know if people are going to sell their games once they get bored with it. While I’ll be leaving and taking my monitors/xbox/games with me… right now it seems like we’re slightly bigger now that brian, jc, george, josh, pika etc are regulars…. so you have more people to extort… i mean, ask for help. Always take an inventory of equipment before you make any big plans

In regards to venue:

  • This is the bigger problem, and one that I never really addressed. You are not allowed to hold tournaments at UF with cash prizes unless you get a sponsors at your event (like gator gaming tried to) and even then I’m not sure what the official UF policy is. If you want to run a cash tournament at UF anyway… then its on you if the wrong people find out. That’s a risk you have to decide to take, and one that I didn’t want to during my last semester at this place.

My advice to you is to look for some business around town. 1982 seems like a good place since its available at late hours and open to people under 21, but that would probably exclude people like pika and some people just don’t like bars. I hear that TGI fridays sometimes hosts but they would most probably want a cut of the money and you would most likely need a venue fee for participants… which could get hairy if you don’t get people from tally and jax to come down since we’re already small time. This is getting more into Jebailey’s roosters monthlies so you might want to ask him for more of those details.

Anyway, these are the things you really need to think about if you want to run something. I’m going to try to run something the tuesday of thanksgiving week with gator gaming. Maybe you, pat and hammy should sit in on a meeting with me and the gator gaming guys sometime.

Ok so I see your point regarding equipment. And since the scene here is slowly growing we can probably do with the equipment that we have maybe.

And yes regarding the venue which I do agree is probably the main issue in regards to running a tourney here. And I guess that the best decision is to not hold a tourney at UF since it would probably be less of a hassle since I feel like a cash tourney would bring in more people from out of town.

And yeah I was thinking if maybe someone had a friend that had a connection at a bar or someplace like that could probably help. If not i wouldn’t mind going with someone to like talk to someone that could help host because I feel like preparation is important especially to set up a date like the right people would have to know in advance. And yeah the TGI thing sounds like a good option and yeah I kinda also want people from around northern/central florida to come out too. And maybe I should ask Jebailey about stuff like this.

And yeah I’m down for sitting in on the metting that you guys are having.
And also I was thinking for encouragement for more people to come like if something like this were to happen like for me personally since I’m really into Marvel I and if I had the extra money I wouldn’t mind putting in some of my personal money into the pot bonus for the marvel side at least to get more people to come out and compete.

Jax poking in to say HI.

As a fledgling TO, my advice would be to keep plugging away at it. Keep a eye on sales of the games and equipment. Eg. newegg had UMVC3 for 30 a week ago and they also had ASUS VH236H (evo monitor) for $140 after rebate. Keep everyone informed, spam each city’s thread and facebook. If you all need help with equipment and streaming tyger up in JAX is a great resource and he also carpool some people. In 2012 I will be doing the same also hauling my (and partner TO’s) 7 monitors and 5 XBOX 1 PS3 and multiple copies of games. There has been talk of creating a circuit of tournaments every 5/6 weeks (Tally, Gainesville, JAX, Daytona, Orlando and maybe even Tampa and Miami) details are still being worked out. The best way to get better is to get out there. Shoot a line to tyger or me. About the updates, as a TO I update all the games the day before, switch between my shows and the update screens

Also with venues, take a look at lan centers, card stores, comic stores, table top game stores.

Are you more of a Marvel player or an AE player? Or some other game thats out?

Tally dropping in to say hi too.

This would be nice to see. Right now, our respective communities are diverse enough to where we each can do our thing, and seeing as everyone is 2-3 hours away, its certainly not out of the realm of possibility. The fact that Gville has ALWAYS shown love to Tally when it comes to tournaments, and that our main TO has family in Gville (aka, a place to chill) is a definite plus for our attendance, plus you’ve got some killers who most of us want to jump on, name Philpro in Marvel and Petey in AE, while we’ve got old schoolers who can play whatever (ST, MvC2, 3S, BB, MB, GG, Tekken, etc), so there’s really no reason not to try to organize something. As long as its convenient (weekend), you really should have no problems pulling in the N. FL crowd now that we are all getting competitively connected, largely due to our TOs putting in work.

cant make it tonight due to overhaul of grad work :stuck_out_tongue:

Looks like I’m not going to be able to make it up again =\

Goddammit, fuck SRK for not notifying me for thread updates.

Shit like this is what I’ve been talking about! Make this happen.

Yo Gville!

I just want to let you guys know that I’m hosting a tournament up here on Dec. 3rd!!!

We will also have KoFXIII and MK!

Dec. 3rd!

EPIC Comics

570 N Alafaya Trl, Building C, Suite 106!

Someone bring Hamilton’s scrubby ass Ken over here, i miss that lil’ nigga!!!

Thanks for the announcement Raf.

EDIT: oh shit KOFXIII is there. I might just HAVE TO go… and it’s in Orlando.

Just a reminder for anyone coming to Ocala Friday for my tournament, pre-register here to save $2 off your door fee or bring a set-up but run it by me first. I know Matt will be one of my guys for this.

And I plan on running a $5 tournament for AE in hopes the $5 entry will get more people to enter.

I hate finals (especially on release week of UMvC3) since I have to do so much here for grad school

sorry if anyone has been bringing or playing Tekken and me not being there (even today) cuz it’s nearing the end of the school year and crunch time is at an all time high.

Will KoFXIII be present next week? I’m holding off from buying but if anyone brings it and I like it, I might get.
