Gainesville Thread: Help yourself to the fridge, but don't touch my beer

48 characters?

so how far is ocala from gville?

got a friend moving up to gville in a couple weeks, and me going to ocala soon thereafter

any info on a scene at either place?

Can’t say I’ve ever been impressed with anyone outside south FL…

Ocala is about a 30-40 minute drive from Gainesville. I host meetups for casuals at my place. On a good day you’ll see about 10 people there and on a bad day 3. For such a small scene we have decent players and travel to tournaments frequently.

A few guys from ocala come up to gainesville to play every now and then. I hear the scene in ocala is even smaller, but I could be wrong.

FUCK YEAH CODY.

FUCK NO DAN AND TEKKEN CHARACTERS. :frowning:

Depends on which route you take, really. 30-45 minutes, I wager.

>Implying there is much of a gaming scene in North Florida. :expressionless:

You’re/we’re rather lucky there is even interest in GNV. Of course, I’ve been attempting to get kids interested in more than Smash at the library by suggesting stuff to the Youth Service staff to hopefully grow the scene(s) in years. As far as now, outside this thread and maybe one UF student I know on another forum that doesn’t post here, I can’t think of anyone that actively plays fighting games much less other games.

Except there is, provided you want to travel. Tallahassee has a very good scene and there’s a small one in Jacksonville and both are about 2 hours away.

Seriously though, if you’re in Ocala/Gainesville come play with us.

OK big news. I just met with the guys that run gator gaming. They’re letting me run the street fighter 4 and marvel tournaments at the August 27th gator gaming event held at the Rion Ballroom in the Reitz building. There’s a lot for me to announce so bear with me on this long post:

Q: What will the rules be? There better not be any of the one round and you’re done nonsense…
**A: **I have a week to submit tournament rules to them. The sooner the better since they want to send that information out asap to their list serv. I’m going to recommend standard double elimination EVO tournament rules. This should go smoothly since I’m going to be running the show. If you guys remember Steve from meetups at Van’s place - the guy that ran the tournament last August - he’ll apparently be in town and said he can help with running the thing or providing a setup. If anyone of you guys can contact him or give me his contact info that’d be great.

Q: What console(s) will the tournaments be on?
**A: **I noted that at their last event a month ago that it was a bad idea to have one ps3 and one 360 to run a SF tournament. Apparently that thing they had last month was supposed to just be for casuals and they ran a tournament at the last minute due to popular demand. Since the August 27th thing will be a tournament I told them to announce a console far in advance and the serious players will make adjustments as needed. We decided to go 360 (sorry phil) for this tournament since that seems to be the established console.

Q: What about laggy tvs/monitors? Will I be randomed out by some scrub (hamilton) just because the TV sucks?
**A: **I specifically asked if their TVs have game mode, and told them how its so important to our community that EVO uses a standard monitor. Their response was asking me if I could provide tvs. Apparently lots of people ask for CRTs to counter this issue in their other games and they’re looking into it. I said I could provide at least 3 TVs on my own. We’re really hoping for at least 8 setups. Can I get commitments from anyone here to provide TVs, systems and ESPECIALLY games?

Q: What games will be played?
**A: **They asked me if I could run all fighting games and I said I didn’t want any part of smash brothers. It seems like they got that covered though. I said for now give me AE and marvel. However this depends on how many people sign up for each. They want to give me about 5 hours (total, not each) to run both tournaments and getting done by midnight is very important to them. If necessary they might restrict me to either AE or marvel and I really want to avoid that. If you haven’t already please fill out the survey to let them know what games you want: https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dExQMk9TVDhmaUIxclIwbHNnOVJnUUE6MQ&ndplr=1

They asked for clarification regarding Arcade Edition. Apparently two people at their event last month were worried because they hadn’t played AE yet, and in their smash community there’s a division between brawl and melee players. I told them that playing vanilla/super instead of AE was tantamount to running a Star Craft tournament and not using Brood War. I said that since they have a (seemingly) large and vocal community of smash brothers that sticks to melee then it was probably right to appease them but I made it clear that we’re running AE.

Q: Is there an entry fee?
**A: **Its free for anyone with a gator1 card and $5 for non-UF students. Since its a student-run organization they are not allowed to charge UF students so we can’t really get prize money for the winners the usual way. Which brings me to my next question…

Q: What are payouts? Are there prizes at all? WTF rob?
**A: **This is kind of up in the air at this point. There was talk about someone building a fight stick with some gator gaming artwork on it to give to first prize, but I told them I was skeptical about this. To be honest the prize isn’t my first priority right now. I’d rather use the tournament to get people aware that the community exists and use that to get people to come to a monthly ranbats type thing.

Q: Wait what? Ranbats?
**A: **Yes! We can reserve a place on campus to have casuals any time we like on campus. I really want this tournament to go well and use it to announce a bi-weekly or monthly ranbat style sort of get-together to try to build a community on campus. Non-UF students would be welcome to the casual meetups since they have a don’t ask don’t tell policy on this. I haven’t ironed out all the issues with this (how long we have the room, frequency, equipment storage etc) but the tournament is my focus right now.

Q: Will this replace weekly SRK meetups?
**A: **Probably not. Ideally I don’t want to trash weekends at my place. I’m thinking maybe a bi-weekly’s on wednesdays or something.

Anyway I think that’s it. It would be awesome if you guys could commit to bringing lagless monitors/systems/games as it would help a lot.

Is there an age limit?

Good shit rob…and the ranbats! Looks like we will finally be able to push our scene past the salty weekend gatherings.

Rob, I’ll be able to bring a full setup. One 360, TV and AE. I’ll have 3SO on that 360 if we are able to do that. I can also bring my PS3 if needed, but I don’t have AE or Marvel for that so it would just be the system. PM me if you wanna talk about it further.

Nice! This is amazing
Well if anything hopefully i can get this converter situation fixed by then. And if anything i’ll do some money matches haha :stuck_out_tongue:

Not an official response, but my guess is no. If they are allowing people outside of UF to enter then I don’t think they’ll ask to see a license. I saw some pretty young people at their tournament last year.

Awesome. I’ll iron out details with you at some point.

Do you know what time the MvC3 part of the tourney will start? You said that it needs to be over by midnight, but do you have any idea when it will begin?

Also, how does sign up work? Do you just show up or do you have to register by a certain time?

no fair phil got a spot in the rules

but srsly gj rob u did what everyone else was too lazy to do. ill do whatever i can to make this tourney work. put a reminder next to ur spreadsheet link that 3SO will be out

also that stick prize is definitely sketchy. not everyone is a stick player. plus what if the stick isn’t a TE or just sucks ass? although just the stick art alone might work

also, sanford vs noel brown, with new audio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJcXNyBEbHs&feature=related

Its a little too early to know about times. It will largely depend on how many setups we have. I’ll be sure to post more info as it comes.

Signs up will be made available online at some point but signing up on the day of the tournament will be allowed as well.

I’m not even allowing you to enter at all unless you bring a certain a certain accessory…

U Jelly petey? :stuck_out_tongue:
And haha I think I know what accessory he’ s talking about.

idk rob i don’t see it anywhere in the rules that i need to… =/
besides its very demeaning of u to refer to her as an accessory. Unicorns have feelings too

Ocala’s scene is probably smaller than Gainesville’s with tons to players who don’t know how to find each other.

I have school Tuesdays all day and Weds till 4. If I don’t work Weds, I plan on stopping by a ran bat or whatever once in a while. I could provide my 360 (once I get the fan fixed) with AE and MvC3 whenever I come.

I get out of work on Sunday at 3 so I’d be able to attend a meet up on that day. I spent a lot of my time in MA using Akuma x( I’m hoping to be of more competition for Petey now that I have a little bit better understanding of the shit you can do with Akuma.

Just moved into town looking to get better than what my current level of play is. Been a longtime Tekken player, use to have a crew in Miami I played years ago and miss the competition. I play any fighter though, but Tekken has always been my primary fighter; Dragunov is my main for now.

Where’s the place to find most of you guys?

You all are a bunch of scrubs for picking petey’s character to figure out how to beat it. Low tier for life son.

Hey there. Our scene isn’t that big (around 10 people) but we usually get together at one of our guy’s apartment. Unfortunately none of us play Tekken but some are interested in starting playing, including myself. We are mostly SF and Marvel players that are most likely going to start playing 3S soon. Again, welcome to the thread.

Coolio. Yeah, I’m use to primarily SF players since my old crew would primarily play SF and SNK stuff (got sick of Neo Geo Battle Colosseum because some of the guys obsessed over it) so non Tekken players is nothing new. I’ve had easier times getting SF layers to start playing Tekken than finding Tekken people to play with :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll keep tabs on the twitter and this thread for next meetup or something.

If anything too I can maybe hit up MarkMan or something for some promotion stuff if tourneys get started up more since I’ve known him for quite a while.
