I meant it’s like AH in the sense that it’s an all girls fighter.
…uh it’s not coming to XBLA. Wherever you heard that it’s complete bullshit.

Yes Dave it is. Options that he had to use headbutt to escape from he no longer has. Mixups from BnBs ending with headbutt he no longer can do because he recovers too slowly. DMG nerf as well. Stand jab has the most ass hitbox now, which really hit his footsie, pressure, and dash punch trap game.
Petey:
I wasn’t looking for a way to beat you. I was legitimately asking for your help in understanding the finer points of a high level Akuma. If there’s something about a character that you don’t know and you ask, I would (and have) more than happily volunteer that. I understand that people need to lose to learn, but getting bodied for 20 straight games IMO does nothing. I’m not hating, or mad, but I was asking for help because I needed it and you are the best resource I have.
FTR, typing via phone sucks.
Secondly, my definition of broken is different. Its a crap match for me. Rog has garbage wakeup. I get that. There are bad matchups in this game. But you said it yourself: Akuma is the only character that doesn’t have a bad match or an inherent weakness in either character design (sans low life, but big deal honestly) or gameplan. No other character can claim that. It upsets me that the character was essentially buffed when he shouldn’t have been, and not nerfed or fixed (I’m aware of the ambiguity of certain setups). I could write a lot about this, but I won’t. Adding characters that deliberately upset the balance of the game is upsetting. That is a personal opinion that I stand by.
Last post, haha.
Matt:
I appreciate that. Had I known that, I would have done all I could to help earlier. I’m glad though that us playing has helped you. Hopefully we can play again soon. I’d like to come out that way for a weekend if Rob would have me.
I mean, it is what it is. I still spend 3+ hours a day in the lab, but me taking this game seriously from a tournament competitive standpoint I can’t see happening anymore. My playstyle shifts frequently so its hard to lock in a set specialization for tournament prep. Most of my time is now spent on working towards the goal of overall character competency so that I can help others learn as well as increase my fundamental fighting game skills and knowledge about this game. I’d like the opportunity to play everyone with my characters a(currently have 20 chars I cycle through).
I won one round against Petey. That’s all that mattered for me. It was great playing against you sir.
You guys got anything upcoming in Gainesville? I’d love to come out there sometime.
Yeah man, I wanted to come to the tourney but real life got in the way. But yeah, when you guys came to town that was like the first time I had played against real competition.
I understand where you are coming from though. I don’t really take this game that seriously but since I like using my character that’s really the only thing that drives me to get better at the game. My playstyle has changed as well throughout SSFIV. I loved rushing down but once I started playing the guiles and other characters that could lame you out it was really frustrating. Now my gameplay is based on reacting to what the opponent is doing and that has worked much better.
But yeah, hope you get to come out sometime.
Hey tally people. We got casuals at my place once per weekend and you guys are always welcome. Chris you know you always got a place to crash, no questions asked.
Chris I know what its like going through a character crisis. For me its not as much the nerfs as its an evolution of me wanting a different playing style. When the optimal strategy for half of honda’s matchups reads like “Do neutral jump fierce until you figure out the pattern” it stops being fun after a while. I’m going to attempt to switch to rushdown characters for awhile just for the shit of it and also from some of Petey’s advice. He’s right… I need to pick a character whose strengths are all the things I’m terrible at: execution and mixups.
That said… if something’s not fun just stop. Life’s too short to do something you aren’t enjoying but don’t write it off completely. Give it a month or two and come back if you have to… well, maybe not that long… after all I might be graduating and leaving town soon.
Appreciate that Rob. Ill hit you up. I honestly want to just bus it out there once a month for a weekend.
And man, I feel you. Man I’d try Bison or Dee Jay to ease yourself into it. They require a moderate level of execution to manipulate their rush down tactics, are still very footsie oriented, have similar walk speeds, and can, if all else fails, down-back like Honda can. If you’re looking for air-to ground rush down, I say Rufus. He’s not hard, but requires that you learn his BnB in order to get anything out of his mixups, plus that’s something Petey can help you with directly since he mained him.
You can also play a link heavy Honda like my friend Brett plays. Spectrum played a frame trap heavy Honda, so its definitely possible to take something from your experiences and apply it to him.
played…shiiitttt…i still play honda in AE alongside Yun. rushdown honda > downback honda
Leaving the shit talking for last.
Chris, while I don’t think you should quit FGs, I think you should step away from the conventional approach (probably not a good choice of words) for a little bit. Try new games (not necessarily fighters, though fighters help the most with things like space awareness), new characters (doesn’t have to be unconventional like Dhalsim) or even try playing under some limitations (play online with normals only, use X AA instead of Y, play more reactively instead of offensive/defensive). I’ve done all those last year and personally preferred the last point the most; it greatly changed the way I play Ken and now I’m able to take more rounds off Petey.
(If you already tried those, listen to Rob. I did this when I got bored of playing guitar and when I came back for it, I didn’t end up burnt out as much whenever I had one of those days. Don’t forget that you got in this because it was FUN.)
Like Matt, I watched how other Kens played and realized that it wasn’t Ken’s lack of BS in Super that didn’t get me wins, it was ME. SFIV being my first serious fighter, I knew straight up that footsies were something I needed to take a hard look at, but didn’t know how to improve. For most of last year I realized that I was spending way too much time on junk like OS’, unblockables, and other aspects when I knew that my footsies had (and still have) a long way to go.
Last but not least, there’s matchups that every character (except the twins, sorry Fei) has to take a different approach in order to win. Until I played you I wasn’t even sure wtf to do against Balrog, as any character I used (see: any time I play Jebailey, moreso before I went to UF).
If I missed something let me know. I’m still reminiscing a lot of scrub moments up until now, and I can imagine there’s a lot more to come when I come back lol.

Rob, unlike you I don’t have a character crisis ^^. And wtf is with this graduating talk, does this mean I’m gonna have to start hosting too??
Pete and Matt, bring yo A-game. Especially for KOF, I’m gonna play XIII a lot since 1. it’s gonna be my first serious one of the series 2. a decent amount of people in Orlando are picking it up. Can’t say I’m excited about VP though. ┐('~`;)┌
Oh I still have a lot of fun with the game. Practice mode is boss. I don’t mind diversity, and I regularly play other characters (I don’t play Balrog in casuals anymore unless its by request or I’m trying to learn a match up at a high level.
Speaking of, I’m gonna play Akuma for now, haha. Rogster has very few op selects (none of which I use). I need to figure out how to regularly apply them.
Copied and pasted from the Tally thread:
Clear your schedules for August 6th guys.
What day is good for a meetup this weekend? I’m thinking of saturday if the Tally people end up coming?
Hey guys im posting this in your thread and i hope to see you guys come out. Last tourney was a total blast! I need my rematch vs petey as well!
Let’s be serious here Pete, how much did you pay these guys to namedrop you?
Akuma is really good but he’s still balanced. I think a lot of people misunderstand that the way he works is when he knocks you down you HAVE TO BLOCK. Wakeup options don’t mean shit really, Balrog has shit wakeup options in general but against Akuma I’ll take Rog’s wakeup options over Ryu’s. Rog can at least gimmick out every few matches with an EX something to escape a corner while Ryu probably isn’t going to ever be able to DP on wakeup against Akuma even with meter. It doesn’t really matter though because when you get knocked down against Akuma you fucked up and now you have to block. Akuma’s footsies are good but many characters can still out-footsie him. Most importantly is that if you do out-footsie him you are rewarded heavily by his low HP.
When you knock him down his teleport is probably the most frustrating thing about him. It can feel really unfair that when he knocks you down you have to block no matter what, but then when you knock him down he has FADC and teleport that he can often use with impunity outside of certain option selects or safe jumps. If you get him in the corner you probably want to do some kind of oki that is “soft pressure” rather than trying to meaty him or get really close. If you stay far back enough you can punish a teleport out, if he doesn’t teleport he’s still waking up in the corner and is going to have to make a risky guess to get out. Pete knows which risky guesses to take in this situation but I think if I create this situation enough and start figuring out what he does to try to work his way out I can turn this situation into a huge advantage that will win matches. Basically no player and no character is in a good position when he is waking up in the corner, if you let him out you fucked up and made a bad decision. It’s not exactly hard to corner people as Boxer either.
Yeah I wouldn’t mind having a meetup on saturday! New people coming is also good too!!!
if u come to gainesville for a meetup, ill tell u absolutely everything i can think of about akuma (theres too much to explain for text). but me telling you about akuma is half of the job. there are things u can do too. i should never be able to teleport if u have charge and ultra. work on punishing that. you drop your dash ultras too, and i get blown up by dash ultras…im not sayin ur execution is bad, its just that u have some akuma specific skills u need to learn. is my sweep pissing u off? build a new gameplan to counter it. its clear ex headbutt and ex punches aren’t doing much for u on wakeup so just save up for super to punish my sweeps. im sure you are working on some of these things, but im emphasizing that this is what the losing player’s mentality should be.
Actually the best advice I can give on dealing with akuma’s vortex is to be unpredictable. I won’t say don’t use dp or backdashes and whatnot, because akuma’s vortex is based on training your opponent, and then countering what you just trained him to do. for example, vs chun, at the start of the match i will safe jump OS sweep after i get a knockdown. This prevents chun from waking up w/ ex bird kick, backdash, jump, and ultra. if chun tries any of these, she will go right back into the vortex after a BnB knockdown combo. when i have trained chun to start blocking, i will go for demon flip throws and crossup tatsus, both of which would fail against ex spinning bird kick and backdash, but will knockdown a chun that is simply trying to block.
your giving akuma too much credit. i will admit that he is a very well rounded character. one of the reasons i picked akuma is because he has so many options, and he can play in so many styles to deal with different situations. this means so many things. i don’t need a sub. i can learn many ways to play the game (runaway/rushdown). but not having a bad match does not mean that the character is broken, at least by my definition. akuma is just a unique combination of normals, specials, and ultras, all of which have their weaknesses and counters for the opponent to find and exploit. and besides, he has a bad match now in AE.
the twins being purposely s tier was retarded. bad move by capcom from a competitive standpoint. i hope the game is patched.
ggs man. we dont have many tournaments goin on around here (especially during summer) but we have our meetups. check our sigs if u have twitter or just check back here for meetup info.
best advice i can give to anyone if you’re looking to improve. i support chris picking up akuma. no better character to learn option selects with lol. half the buttons u press wont show up on screen
stfu scrub
aug 6th is move-in day to my fall apt so we’ll see if i can make it…i hope to…
I think I have a location in mind… I need to send some emails and figure out logistics but I definitely want to host something before my time in this town is done… stay tuned.
Also… casuals at my place saturday from 2pm to whenever. Last sunday was fun as hell.
Also can someone bring a console saturday? I think I want 2 AE setups and 1 marvel setup but I only have 1 360 and 1 ps3.
Scrub, wait til I show you what’s up.
