my girlfriend’s mom used to teach pre-k (not kindergarten, my mistake) classes.
she made a grand $10k a year.

That’s impossible. Teachers make closer to 35k to 40k a year. It’s impossible to survive on 10k a year unless she has other perks. I could care less about Hope since I’m no longer in college, and don’t ever plan on going back. But people have to realize you can’t rely on the government to take of your education, it’s something you’re going to have to maintain on your own. There are ways to do it, if you have to give up SF and other leisure activities to make sure your GPA stays at a certain level, then by all means make the sacrifices. College is an investment into your future, so I think the sacrifices are well worth it. I know when I was in college I didn’t even play video games, and made computers my entire lifestyle. It’s a highly competitive market out there, I should know as I’ve been competing in the market for 10 years. With outsourcing and offshoring, you’re going to have to be exceptional in the market. Thank goodness I got my real world experience before a lot of offshoring became an option for employers. The market is really nothing to play with. Getting the degree is the first part, learning how to survive in a dynamic market place is the hardest part. Your time in college should definitely be geared towards observing market trends, because it’s not going to be remotely easy once you enter the job market
This is priceless.
As someone who actually made it through all 4 years of college on Hope, I saw plenty of people show up, party hard, and then drop out after a few years. I think Hope should have a tuition payback stipulation with it: if you don’t finish college, you have to pay back whatever funding Hope provided you. I’d even suggest interest on that repayment, but some might consider me spiteful for that…
I didn’t have a family to support, but I did work full time. Heck, I’ve been working full time since I was 14 because I could find people to hire me. It isn’t impossible to succeed academically as well as hold down a job, it just means that your life is in overdrive for a while. Then again, I’ve been out of college for ~5 years now and the overdrive hasn’t gone away…
Raising the GPA to only 3.2-3.3 would most likely lead to GPA padding, which has been an issue since the early years of Hope’s implementation. Teachers have good intentions thinking that they should give the financial opportunity to as many kid as possible, but the reality is that a lot of people just aren’t cut out for college. Issues like this as well as an overly complicated administrative board for the program (people lining their pockets) are part of what has crippled the funding for this program.
Oh yeah and college textbooks are a joke. Unless you think you’ll use the book after college or explicitly need it to complete you work, don’t waste your money on them!
Isn’t the whole HOPE incentive primarily to keep students in state? I know i sure as fuck would have better out of state options right now if it wasnt for that.
hope nerf…well means mo-fo’s got to step it up and keep it moving. less games and bs’ing, more book time. I’m cool with it because the hope is still there. so as long as hope is still there what the F$$$ are ppl bitching about…so it’s not an easy ride now.
I’m off tomorrow so I’m trying to get that marvel3 action in…
Ice let me know whats up tomorrow…well really today
I was attacked by a cougar today and I loved it haha, can we say sugar mama… I’m gonna tell her to buy me an rx8 haha

Not trying to sound like an arrogant ass because it is tough, but a 3.7 GPA is possible. You just have to focus on your stuff a bit more and pray to God you don’t have hard ass professors:confused:
And yes Marty…I cheat to win. The great Eddie Guerrero taught me that lesson:china:
Latino HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAT!
Sup its 6:05am I’m drinking and is like wtf why is there some much safety super in this game…MvC3!
any way what new in life ATL Loc is drunk and this is only the rare time ill post shit! see you people sat and at FR
I don’t think you have to keep a 3.7 in college, just when you get out of high school.
3.7 is a very strange number. At that point, most people would just be shooting for a 4.0 and getting the scholarships that go along with it. I think they most likely did that because they wanted it to be a high enough cut off that a lot of people would be rendered ineligible and the people that could get it would have a ton of options that weren’t the HOPE scholarship. Anyway you look at it, it’s a really shitty deal for students. I don’t understand how or why education is the first thing to get cut when we’re constantly hearing that we’re lagging behind BECAUSE of a lack of education. It’s fucking stupid.
In order to keep your scholarship you must maintain the stated GPA, if it is now 3.7,graduating college will have the low numbers as graduating high school students and graduating high school students is already in the low 30% so we will see another 15% drop out do to not being able to reach for any real help and college being a farfetched idea and have only 10-15% of the children in our entire state gaining a high school education!!
Issac your not wrong but your not right either!!
This is broke ass Ga, no way in hell in this state, with it’s already slow education, will the average community of people be able to maintain a 3.7 GPA when the average in this state alone is 2.56.
May be easy for you to keep that GPA but we got large communities of people who work, kids, after school activities sports and none sports, tutoring, the local drama in the hood, your home situations consisting of lack of income from single parents and a list of other things and what I typed is the majority here even in the deep south.
You also have to include the fact that most high schools are not teaching you college prep classes, when I moved to Ga, I was ahead one year, not because of age but because philly was on a higher scale in terms of education, I was taking Biology in middle school yet in Ga some high schools were not teaching biology until 11th grade, trigonometry until 12th grade which means your missing out on cal and your math is still on a high school level,so you pay college money to attend just to learn what you should have learned in high school!!
The sad par about this is education pay rate (teachers/some professors) is not going up, the average teacher between Pre-k and 9th grade makes 16 thousand per year which is fucking horrible especially if they have kids of there own.
High School teachers make about 22 thousand, normally school bus drivers make if not the same, just a bit more, totally un-fair!!
Education in GA sucks horribly
I graduated high school in the hood and went to GA Tech. GA tech math courses are on another level. I was not prepared. Hence another
Luckily I had hope and it only required a 3.0 when I went. Sucks hope is getting harder to get (in life and in financial aid).
I will try to make ATL Revival this Sat, but still not 100% sure. It will be a last minute decision. Hope to see all the old faces there.
Which is what I’m saying, luckily I got my education skills from NY/NJ which has a WAY faster learning curve than down here. Don’t get me wrong, there are fast people here too, but the way that they teach people makes it seem like they’re slow. Teenagers have problems passing the GHSGT which was, to me, so easy, I only studied in homeroom before whatever section it was & pass them all on the first try while sleeping during it. But yeah, for a 3.7, I might as well attempt to get a 4.0 & endeavor to milk scholarships that are offered to me. This is going to suck for me because when I start school, I was literally hoping on HOPE to assist me somewhat when I get my GPA up, but it’ll take a year for that to kick in.
Kids don’t learn hardly anything in terms of Math in High School these days. I tutor kids as a side business/hobby and it’s amazing the fundamental lack of base mathematical concepts that even the teachers notes have in them let alone in what is communicated to the students. Now a days they teach something as fundamental and important as factoring polynomials in school with half ass tricks and short cuts instead of actually teaching them the appropriate set of rules and guidelines to solve those kind of problems properly. Since my time in this state I have seen several students who couldn’t even tell me what the mathematical definition of division is (not opposite of multiplication), what is a rational and irrational number or even be able to mathematical define what is a parallelogram, triangle or square. Without base concepts like that already under their belt, kids in 9th grade already have bigger problems than wondering about the hope scholarship, like their extreme lack of knowledge in key critical classes (Reading Comprehension, Math, Science, Grammar).
Agreed because when I graduated in 2008, all throughout my time in school down here, I would wonder why the teachers would tell the students to do all these shortcuts & when I would show my work, everyone would think I was a try hard but instead it was my know all of the tools to figure out how to break down Algebra/Statistics, etc. There isn’t a deep enough push for the basic Mathematical skills in addition to reading skills. I could go on a whole report with that subject but I won’t “rant.”
Yeah I would definitely agree with the people that say other states just teach at a higher level. Personally, I didn’t experience this because I took more rigorous classes in HS, so I think I would do okay if I went to college anywhere. But on level classes really are a fucking joke. I think GA problems are just because the bar is set so low. There is no expectations for high school students, its one of the classic issues where kids in the way upper and way lower groups get all the attention and the middle gets shafted.
I feel like if you have enough self-motivation, you can really overcome any obstacle, but most 16 and 17 yr olds lack this quality by itself. This is where teachers should come in. I had a lot of teachers that had a no bullshit sort of attitude, but again I think that’s because those were honors and ap classes where they just expected more. I heard stories of coach’s history class where he would just hand out worksheets and sit on baseball.com all day. Obviously these were just my experiences at North Cobb, but I’m sure people have similar experiences or knew of teachers that just didn’t give a shit. Honestly, I’m not really surprised that we’re one of the dumbest states as a whole
As far as HOPE goes, I still believe its better they tweak it somewhat otherwise there won’t be a HOPE scholarship in a few years at all. But if you really do have to keep a 3.7 through college that’s rough. Keeping a 3.7 at UGA is fucking hard and I imagine some of you GA tech guys have the same issue. Like people said earlier, alot of people have work and other obligations so I think that may be somewhat of a problem.
I guess in the end if you’re stressing about that extra 10%, then you need to just stop bitching and put in the extra work its gonna take
Lol, I think my high school stories would trump most people’s when it comes to bad teachers, honestly. It really is sad the state that GA’s public school system is in…
I’ve ALWAYS had bad teachers, but I always took the personal responsibility to make sure I went the extra length to make sure that I not only learned how to go about doing something, but to also understand WHY it was being done.
A buddy of mine has always struggled with college for the simple reason that he heavily relies on his professors, which unless you have a one on one relationship with them, it needs to be understood that you are going to be required to put in that extra effort to not only pass the class, but understand the material.
As far as you guys with full time jobs and children, well, that’s tough, and I feel for you. I think anyone that wants an education should have the ability to get it, both financially and as far as time consumption goes, but there is also the simple fact that some people are just not cut out for college, in more ways than intellectually. I’d hope those people do what they have to do, and constantly look for anyway at all to get an education if it is what you seek.
On a lighter note, I am giving out free educations in you getting your ass scraped by me in Marvel 3. Tuition is next to nothing for this class.
its gettin spicy in here…
You better not say shit about Ga’s educational system
You better not say a damn word!!!
