GA Thread: Rise of the Fallen has begun!

Lack of hunger is a problem for me because when I do put the time in after an hour or two of training by myself/playing online randoms everything becomes stale and it’s hard to keep interest.

In training mode I usually work on combos, frame traps, hit confirms and counter hit combos for awhile but I don’t feel like I really get much from it so I’ll get bored and stop. Or if I was recently beaten by something I didn’t know how to handle I’ll go and test out what I can do against it. It sounds like there might be something more to training mode from the way you guys are talking or is it that I should persist even if I become bored when I feel like I’m consistent at whatever I’m doing?

Another thing is online play, I absolutely hate it but I know it’s something I need to learn to stomach more often if I want to improve. Not much to say here besides I need to do it more often.

I feel like I learn a lot more from extended casual games with players I don’t play regularly, but you guys claim personal training is the key. Is there anything you can suggest I apply to my solo training or is it just do it more often?

Hey man, there are actually gatherings held pretty often all over the place, so it pretty much depends on where you live. Where do you live/go to school? That would make it easier to reccomend where to break into the scene.

do more of this.

i like to do the “this button beats that button” thing…if that makes sense and link combo training(for SF4 mainly since there very inportant in that game). Links are too godlike:tup:

Put it this way: my time in the training room consists of…

1-10% Combo execution(don’t need alot when you play Rose lol)
2-70% Plan Testing
3-20% “Sparring”

Practicing combos/links/juggles is important of course, but is minimal to the real meat which is testing things that beat you before or you want to better deal with. Many times I get ideas when I’m watching a video or reading something, and instead of just copying the strat I would find a way to make it work for me or modify it by using the same principle.

For example, early in Vanilla’s life Ultradavid made a post about Cammy dealing with Boxer on wakeup, and that you can stick out a move that recovers faster than the headbutt you can safely pressure him if he doesn’t do it and defend it if he does. I decided to test this out with Rose since the example he used(c.mk) was similar to my c.mk, and I found out it works better than Cammy’s because my hit box is alot lower than her’s and the hit frames of the headbutt were above the ground, making it whiff. I got the idea to try it against EX Jesus and it worked, changing the matchup for me a bit.

It’s not how much you practice, its what you practice and the plan for your practice. Think about a goal you have for a matchup/strat, then use your imagination and knowledge to find ways to deal with it. Use online/offline play to refine/reject your ideas, rinse and repeat.

Now, what I mean about sparring is playing against the computer in matches, so you can kinda simulate situations and test your reaction. For years this was my primary way to train since i didn’t have a core group of people to spar with outside of arcades, but nowadays with online this makes it obsolete(playing offline especially so). Plus the computer is usually brain dead and do the obvious thing(like ultras on wakeup or automatically react to things like jabs), but if it wasn’t for this I would’ve learned that I can hop over Viper’s Ex Seismo/U1 with sc.mk, or screw with Abel’s U2 with EX Spirals, breaking it or making it whiff completely. Thinking about it more, it helps you calm your urges down a bit because the computer does dumb shit lol, but it may only work for just me.

I actually go to school at ABAC, about an hour north of Valdosta, which is probably the biggest name I could throw down. Wouldn’t mind driving to Tallahasse or Macon, anything within a 4-hour drive, if it was gonna be something big, though. Lastnight’s MvC3 midnight-release at GameStop was completely dead, so I figure I’m gonna have to start networking to find folks to play with.

If anyone is holding any MVC2, MVC3, CvS2, or 3S sessions after FR let me know. Otherwise I’ll be holding sessions at my crib if the Mrs. agrees to spend time with her fam.

ggs to everyone I played last night. Got a long way to go. Last night was my first night playing the game, I’m one of those unfortunate people who have to buy games on release day. Anyway, I’m not sure how well the team I’ll have work. I just know anytime someone sends me an invite, make sure it’s just a 2 player lobby. Normally I wouldn’t mind a bigger lobby, but I’m trying to learn the game and experiement, and with no spectator mode I just get impatient. I know my team has a long way to go, and all 3 of my characters have a learning curve to them. But I think Trish/Doramamu/MODOK can make something work. I’m having the most problem keeping out linear rushdowns. The basic dash in and hit button rushdown which should be easier to counter. I’m having a big problem with the button layout where I forget where my buttons are in the middle of a match. Too many years of MVC2 I guess.

You live far from final round venue dude.
