'Fun' Characters

<font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”>I generally like to make threads that get people talking and discussing things. So here’s one I thought would be interesting.</span></font><div style=“font-family: Arial, Verdana; font-size: 10pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;”><br></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”>I’ll start by elaborating on what would fall under ‘fun’, at least in my book. Your own definition may vary but at least you’ll get an idea of where I’m coming from. A ‘fun’ character is a fighter that’s generally easy to pick up, has some notably strong normals/specials that are easy to perform, and has a BnB that can be combo’d into any number of ways for solid damage. Looks are secondary to me; I’m not concerned with character appearance in a fighting game. If the fighter feels right, I don’t care if they look like the bastard off-spring of Blanka and Lord Raptor. </span></font></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”><br></span></font></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”>For SFxT, these are characters that I think are ‘fun’ and those that are not:</span></font></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”><br></span></font></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”><b>Hwoarang</b>: Fun. Reason being is that he’s a strong character with no less that 3 overheads, two of which he can combo off of. He’s got good, safe pressure, tricky mix-ups, and can now combo off his s. LK. His go-to normals are all fairly solid (despite feeling his LP is weak) and his specials are all quite good. And, he’s a fantastic set-up character, making way for his partner to get in and do some serious damage.</span></font></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”><b>Law</b>: Fun. Even if all of his special’s weren’t completely safe, Law is still a blast to play. His godly c. MP and c. MK, having a proper anti-air with his Flip Kicks and C. HP, and he’s the Bruce Lee tribute. They’re generally always fun to play. He’s a great battery character, as well as a solid set-up character with his Shaolin Kicks.</span></font></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”><b>Dudley</b>: Fun. It’s Dudley man! Dude hits like an Icelandic freight train and I LOVE his 3rd Strike theme music. Naturally classy and never brash, he’s got solid normals, a killer corner mix-up game, and nearly all of his chains in this game are safe. Or, link into other normals for proper combos.</span></font></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”><b>Paul</b>: Fun. Big surprise the self-proclaimed ‘Best in the Universe’ goes here. Paul is just like Dudley; Big and solid. But is much more loud and shouty about his strength. Which is fun. He’s a wildman, basically. Sure he’s slow, but his meterless combos can break 400, and with meter he’s hitting 500-600! And his blows have a real weight to them, making it clear he’s not holding back. No matter what you may be. </span></font></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”><br></span></font></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”><b>Jin</b>: Not Fun. Mist step. God DAMMIT I hate this motion! This one thing is what kills it for me, and prevents me from spending any large amount of time with Jin. That motion is impossible to get out consistently, and it’s key for his meterless BnB’s! At least with Kaz you don’t have to be good with his Mist Step and EWGF in order to do solid damage or just be good with him overall. </span></font></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”><b>Cody</b>: Not fun. Oh Cody, Cody, Cody… I wanna like you bro, I do! Y’got the knife, you punch hurricanes, you jump on people’s spines. But… I just hate how much work I have to do just to win with you! It’s really frustrating much of time when you just push and push and push with Cody, and there’s not much you can when you’re being pressured or kept out. His overhead is balls, his best poking tool got gimped all to hell, you HAVE to know how to frame trap with him in order to bust people open. And I don’t learn frame traps, I just don’t. They are a strange concept I have no interest in learning any time soon. At that point, the game stops being fun, when I have to memorize what normals can trap my foe.</span></font></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”><b>Xiaoyu</b>: Not fun. She just doesn’t make any sense. I get she’s a pure rush-down/mix-up character. But… There’s no appeal to me, absolutely none, to look into playing her. Especially Stance Cancelling in order to maximize damage. I get cramps just thinking about it. And both of her voice actors are annoying and grating. Just tossing that out there. I don’t feel she has any stand out normals, and being able to mentally keep track of what stance to be in, or when to be turned around, is not fun either. I shouldn’t have to think THAT much during a match. And in doing so, during a heated fight, mistakes will be made. Repeatedly.</span></font></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><b style=“line-height: normal;”>Brian</b><span style=“line-height: normal;”>: Not fun. Heavy sigh. Another character I really wanted to like, and was prepared to pick up. But just left him when I learned that he is among the most unsafe characters in the whole damn game. He’s got one chain, I think, that can be made safe. Maybe two. Other then that, all punishable. And because most of his stuff comes out of chains, it scales down his damage pretty quick and pretty hard. And I’ll never forgive Capcom for making his c. MK animation so goddamn STUPID. </span></font></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”><br></span></font></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”>So yeah, those are a few of my choices. I’m curious to see what everyone else has to say!</span></font></div>

I want to play Paul x Paul.<br>

<font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”>How is Bryan not fun ? His super alone makes him one of the most fun characters in the game , he hits like a truck too .  </span></font>

Bryan is fun in a way that he’s entertaining to watch.  Perhaps that’s the reason why Mike Ross uses him on his show.<br>

Bryan is one of my favorite characters to play…

It’s too bad that he just doesn’t cut it on any of my teams that needs to win.

Asuka and Hugo are a similar situation. So much fun, so much suck.

My favorite good character to play is probably Abel. He gives no fucks and likes dogs. So I can relate to him on a personal level.

This was so funny to read to me

I think Bryan’s pretty darn fun. It just feels so satisfying to hit someone with that overhead… “Weak!” into combo. Also, punishing fireballs with Super is amazing.<div><br></div><div>My favorites are probably Elena, Bryan, and Dudley.</div><div>Elena’s too cute to resist. Seriously. And I love opening people up with her for combos that take the opponent clear across the stage.</div><div>Bryan’s just mean. Being mean is good sometimes. He has his bad matchups, but it’s all the more rewarding to win with him.</div><div>Dudley is an interesting character, but I think he’s fun purely from the close-range rushdown perspective. He’s a real bully up-close, but you have to work to get there.</div>

Well I’ve committed myself to mastering xiaoyu and I’m having a pretty damn good time lol

i think law is my favorite char in the game so far. i have had so much trouble picking a point char and i found it.<div>1. I fucking love the “wataaa!” and his voice acting (JPN ones) so satisfyign to hear</div><div>2. His animations are boss. fist fury rush to dragon palm to kick looks so cool</div><div>3. His playstyle. He seems so safe so you can really freestyle with him and mix up your shit</div><div><br></div><div>second char</div><div>Kazuya</div><div>Not fun at all if you cant do electrics at all.</div><div>Super fun once you can sort of do them.</div><div>Reason: the satisfaction of landing an electric is unreal. I grin harder when i land that than f+mp. cl mp cr fp criminal upper with cody in AE</div><div>2nd Reason: That purple stuff. God electrics are so fun to do and see done. Every time im on edge thinking “can i land 1 more?” till the combo is done</div><div><br></div><div>On a side note i advise everyone to mess with a different tekken char every so often in training and maybe online if your a sf player. They are seriously so much fun compared to the same old of the sf cast your are used to. All i want to do is play tekken chars now lol. Also its fun once you get used to the moveset to watch a tekken game and see how many moves got ported over to the game</div>

I find Bryan fun and I enjoy him, though I don’t think he’s that good a character.<div><br></div><div>Also, Elena is hella fun of course, as is Paul and Dudley</div>

I cheese pretty hard when hitting that link with Cody, but since I rarely land EWGF ever, I wouldn’t know. :frowning: I still think Kazuya’s pretty fun.

Bryan actually has like 3 safe strings and no he doesn’t really hit that hard compared to the actual hard hitting chars. But he’s hella fun to play tho. Xiaoyu used to be fun to play but now that they nerfed her damn near 30 frame oh shes not as fun anymore. Law and hwo is fun as hella tho

Lol your portrait made me realize. If you played cody in AE just fuck with him in cross tekken the same way you would play him in AE. It wont work at higher levels im sure but i was frustrated last night and just put cody on point and played him as a one man team against my fellow beginners and lol its too fun

Asuka is also pretty darn fun to play, though I acknowledge a fair bit of her faults<br>

To me, there is only one real fun character: Paul!<br><br>I enjoy playing Guile too, but feel discouraged when even Ryu’s c.HP is a thousand times better than Guile’s. I’m willing to say, that he has the worst anti air (of the moves that are meant to “anti air”) in the game. And 1F link bnbs are no fun either…<br><br>Lei looks like he could be fun.<br>

1-frame bnbs are fun IMHO. I play Evil Ryu in SSF4.<div><br></div><div>Paul seems fun, but Idk… I just can’t play characters that are commonly seen. Except Dudley, I’ll make an exception there. He was one of my sub-mains in SSF4 and remains so in SFXT.</div>

Alisa is fun. She has all kinds of wacky tools and moves. Its funny to watch them squirm while they try to counter chainsaws. Then they figure out its not safe and you lose because shes unsafe on everything she does against anyone with a long c.MK<br>

I’d probably play Alisa is her normal outfit wasn’t so goofy looking. Like… they were so trying to make the character as anime as possible, and she kinna looks like a clown for it. >_>

Paul really is fun. There’s no other character in this game that quite feel like they beat people senseless in the same way Paul does, a feeling that’s reinforced whenever you look at their healthbar after a combo.

Juri is the most enjoyable character for me to play in this game… to the point that when I’m not using her, my “fun factor” decreases from 5.0 to 1.5.

Cammy is also hella fun to play, namely because of her speed and how recklessly she tosses herself at the competition.

Really enjoying Marduk too, namely because he’s a grappler with a decently fast dash, something I heartily enjoy. That and his throws just look awesome.

For me, playstyle + aesthetics + character personality are what make a character fun. I’ll work with weaknesses (as long as the character fits my playstyle and strategy in general) if I’m attached to characters. Part of my problem though, is that I have a metric shit-ton of characters I play, so I never really know who I’m going to stick with from one day to the next. For now I’m just rolling with that.
