Said victim also has no business with going to a fighting game tournament.
Yes, it sounds shitty on paper, but would you really risk the possible drama and controversy if she decided to show up at the event while Noel was playing?
Not surprised most of the people reacting negatively and saying that Noel should be banned instead are all newer folk. You folks don’t realize that this is part of our roots and that there are some older members of the community who have done time.
Just because we’re moving forward and becoming more and more “eSports” bit by bit each day doesn’t mean we should forget where we’re coming from.
One of the basic parts of our culture is the fact that, at the end of the day, we don’t really care about things like race, gender and even criminal records (though we may joke about them), what’s important is skill. It didn’t matter if the guy you were up against was an african american ex-convict, a stoner asian or a gay hispanic guy, you respected them the moment they showed their skills.
Wow this is the reason I stop browsing SRK. Don’t you remember the man beat his girl friend in a tournament venue? How does that not effect fighting game scene again? Oh we punish the victim by banning them instead of the clear offender.
“We” also have no qualms with banning people who might be detrimental to the scene’s growth or would give it a bad image. I agree with you to an extent, but I think this is beyond just playing games in a democratized space.
And who’s to say Noel’s ex wanted to rile things up? Maybe she just wanted to show up and play some games. Banning the victim of one of your players’ dumb out-of-venue decisions is just backwards.
EDIT: At the same time, I understand that banning him from the tournament would be punishing him for something that has nothing to do with the FGC (double edit: I should clarify about it not having to do with the field of competition). But banning his ex from the venue is still absurd.
Exactly? So what the hell are you trying to imply with this?
It’s not like we’re talking about some guy who had previous issues that have since resolved, you’re talking about a guy who is dragging the repercussions of his very recent crimes to events, a guy who has also assaulted at least two other players at tournaments.
Yes, everyone posting in this thread has never attended fighting game events before registering their current srk account. Great point, but really, understanding what’s wrong with making special arrangements for domestic violence perpetrators and AGAINST their victims has nothing to do with how long you’ve been playing fighting games.
You’re really this fucking stupid, holy fuck. I’ve always known it but I’ve never seen all the proof of how big a fucking idiot you are til now. JFC.
I got no problem with Noel still being able to attend events, the stuff tha happened aint my business and my opinions on the matter are my own but holy fuck come on use your brain. If she shows up people either can talk to her to not cause problems or oh well, Noel has to leave the event, he messed up and has to pay consequences, THAT’S HOW LIFE WORKS! It would be fucked up if she only went to eventsw to fuck up his day but oh well. And no even back in the day we didn’t respect you just because of skill if you were a POS human being Not saying Noel is or isn’t and you wouldn’t know that BECAUSE YOU WERE NEVER IN THE SCENE BACK THEN.
Well it’s time for that part to change, and fast. I don’t care if his ex gf has nothing to do at majors yet travels to all of them just so he won’t be able to be there. The community shouldn’t help him deal with the situation he created himself by being violent. You reap what you sow.
I think it’s a good thing that victims of abuse are banned from tournaments. You know how crazy chicks get when you punch them in the face. They shouldn’t be allowed to play fighting games with other people 'cause they’re tainted by those bruises on their faces.
while the first idea wouldnt confer any advantage to the player, i dont see how these would be any less illegal than button binding beyond what the in-game options allow. a diagonal is comprised of two discrete inputs that happen to be pressable at once thanks to the mechanical design of a stick. if directions are subject to the same conditions that attack buttons currently are, then having an u/f or u/b button activated by a single switch would be illegal since no such option exists to be toggled in the game. whether or not the game designers should be deciding whats illegal is another story
where i think the above gets blurry is because of pads. analog sticks use potentiometers instead of switches, so im guessing that analog sticks actually do have 8 discrete inputs (with no overlap) instead of 4 (with forced overlap). so maybe one could argue that using a switch-based stick and having four extra buttons for directions is really just matching the analog stick’s number of discrete inputs. unless they ban “directional redundancy” or something related to physical limitations of activating directions, both of which cannot be done because modern pads have a dpad and two analog sticks. lots of redundancy there, and physical restrictions are obviously out the window any time you have two or more components for inputting directions.
if you’re going to be in a position of power, you must understand diplomacy.
TOs can’t act like that because when problems pop up, their attitude prevents the scene from getting better. In order to move forward, we have to accept problems with the scene, actively talk about it to generate the best possible solutions so we can pick 1 to implement as a standard.
I don’t run big events, just small regional ones, but I feel like as a TO I’m there to support the players. That is the TO’s role, to support the players and let them play under as many ideal conditions as possible. If there are disputes and or problems, I tell all people who are in attendance who they can talk to fix what’s going on and we can work it out. TOs should approach all problems like that rather than using supreme authority rebuttals.
I was under the impression that Noel hit her by accident when she got in the middle of Noel and the person who she was cheating on him while they were fighting, hence why she got hit.
You people made it sound like if he was mauling her on regular basics which as far as i know it wasn’t the case.
Also what does Noel have to do with Final Schedule and what happened on FR17?
Keep it on topic or I’m going to infract you and close this. If you need to make your own Noel thread do that. Do not keep derailing this thread.
this post has 2 purposes. To explain his joystick and tell his experience. The 2nd purpose is to let the scene know what is going at tournaments in hopes of fixing some of these problems in the future.
what happened to him outside of joystick issues could of happened to ANY GOOD player from any area. I don’t want to see it happen to him or anyone else for that matter when its possible to actively talk about what is going on and come up with good solutions to some of these problems.
It’s not the first time these issues have popped up nor will it be the last if we don’t try to find a way to fix them.
I feel that if you’re going to ban that stick on the basis that diagonal input buttons are illegal, then you have to ban other currently legal devices that use single switches for diagonals as well. I know there’s at least one PDP pad out there that uses 8 microswitches for the d-pad, for example. And like others have pointed out, it’s hard to square that kind of ruling with analog sticks, too.
what a joystick is, a device with 4 little buttons in it that are small and hidden and you use a lever to push the buttons instead of your fingers, and with the design of the joystick you can push the lever in one direction that presses two of the little buttons at the same time. Joysticks are legal and hitboxs are legal, no reason a player cant have both if he wants.
