For PS1, Street Fighter EX1 requires select to use the super versions of akuma/garuda/bison, select also allows quick restart in single player mode if you wish to keep using the same character, also needed for codes iirc. Quick restart in EX2 also requires the select button. Select is also used in training mode for both games to reset the camera. Marvel super heroes uses select to switch between gems iirc. I think Ryu’s fake fireball in alpha 2 requires the select button? Also choosing old characters?

And the only function i can think of for select buttons are to exit the game mode.
