Frustration From Footsies

I don’t know why but lately I can’t play like myself. I can’t win at all or play at a higher level than I am right now. I play online thanks to a lack of a local scene and I’m growing sick.

I don’t know why but now I can’t win at all, putting far too much pressure to the point losing a game gets me frustrated, angry, scrutinizing every action I make. I’m seeking Anit Air’s, whiff punishing and the works but it’s not helping m game.

High PP’s and characters like Bison and Makoto gets me running scared and frightened to make a move from their advantages. Ever since I tried playing footsies, it’s been a down hill battle thanks to the lack of players wishing to go down the road. I enjoyed 3000PP who fights in this manner but lower level players that I’m unfortunately stuck with are either clueless or hates playing footsies which reinforces my IDGAF online habits I’m trying to break.

I play Ryu for his simplicity but also for how hard he must be pushed to win.

Note, I’m not a perfect model for footsies and I’m learning but thanks to this new style I’m adapting, it’s becoming a bigger chore and a harder game to utilize in my mind while keeping the game under my control.

Whenever you want to level up and push yourself there’s a period where you lose more bc of trying to implement these new things in your game.

Stick with it. Although if it frustrates you so much maybe you should play less, or practice more of these things in training room.

That said, yeah, it is frustrating to realize your opponent has no interest in playing the deeper footsie game and is just going to do the same stuff. Find those Higher PP characters and ones who scare you and play them. You will learn more.

Thanks, every loss grates my teeth and has me ready to break something since I’m certain if I play a different manner, I’d win. I only had one good game last night versus a Makoto and we spaced one another, I left my controller in neutral for two to three seconds observing her spacing and her reaction to my neutral state. My better game.

Got any tips on fireballs? I watch Daigo fearlessly throw hadokens but the second I throw a second one, I eat a jump in. The answer is to not throw another one but how do they get away?

Against “non-footsies” people usually I just pare down my game. They’re usually not good players so I just find a move, tool, or tactic, that works against them and use it. There’s not much point for me to play in a respectful manner against someone who won’t play that game.

Fireballs? Establish that you will bait a jump in and DP it before you throw too many. Daigo/etc get away with it sometimes bc they have such a reputation that people respect them, sometimes unduly so.
You don’t have that. Establish it in the game itself as soon as possible. And there are some people who will never learn, it’s up to you to figure out if you’re facing one of those and just keep baiting/playing safely.

They also happen to be very good at using fireballs/throwing them unpredictably so you might want to just change your rhythm. Maybe instead of throwing fireballs immediately after each other you delay them a bit to check for jumps, little things like that.

If you are playing an opponent who is just making yolo jump in reads every time he’s in jump in range, then you shouldn’t be throwing another fireball at that range anyways. Make him respect your anti-air and then maybe throw another, or if he never respects it then just take the round with nothing but anti-airs.

With regards to playing footsies against players who aren’t doing that themselves. If you are trying to walk back and whiff punish a sweep against a player who is just jumping around and doing shoryukens, then you’re doing it wrong. You have to play to the player, “higher level play” only develops when both players aren’t committing to easily exploitable lesser strategies (ie they respect your ability to anti-air so they don’t just hold up, they respect your ability to play safe and punish so they don’t just DP at every occasion). If they aren’t doing that then you should just exploit their weakness.

So ya, if you want to learn the deeper parts of the game, you have to play better players lol.

I’m pretty much playing on auto pilot while keeping regards to spacing well. It’s been working out. And stops bullshit idiots spamming tricks to win. Thanks guys.
