Frustrated/Not sure how to appoach this game

Yeah, I sounded a little assy. Glad MadTitan took it so well. I was very tired lol

sorry.

whatever happened to finding a homie and putting in work in the training room? finding people in your area through these very forums to meet up and play together? you pick it up, come on here and read the BASICS of the game. practice. read some more. practice. once you get the BASICS down then you can move on to trying higher level stuff which is pointless because you need to learn what characters can do what in ‘this’ situation or ‘that’ situation. this is essentially learning every characters ups and downs and how to exploit the downs to your best advantage. this comes back to game knowledge and being comfortable with the BASICS(sorry for the caps but this point needs to be stressed. you’ll never make it anywhere in this game if you’re not willing to learn basic moves). 9Revolta said it. MadTitan said it. they’re not just saying it because it sounds smart, they’re saying it because it is smart. you can watch combo vids all day but it won’t matter if you don’t know what a triangle jump is or when its best to use it. most people shouldn’t even be playing online until they have sufficiently prepared for it. i come from a time where we’d walk or catch the bus to the mall just to go the arcade. i’ve invested, literally and figuratively, in this game and that’s what it takes. there’s 52(?) characters and a lot of thought has gone into all of them(except servbot, everyone knows he’s just there because he’s too damn cool to be left out). my friend is learning this game and i feel bad because the difference in our play is staggering, which is no surprise. i can imagine what it looks like online and why people would get frustrated. start from square one and build the rest of the pyramid from the bottom. when you’re finished the view will be great. drive by rant status!

@madtitan: were you on any other forums with that name? i feel like i’ve seen it somewhere before.

think this is the only place I post as madtitan… but its a fairly common thanos reference so you’ve probably seen it from someone else b4…

I think I just take this as a serious issue b/c new players cripple themselves early by trying to run before they can walk… seeing some guy attempt to do a highly scrubby ‘variation’ on sent/mando stomp o’ matic last night… dude “stomped” his way into IM infinite 3 matches strait. Only other thing he had was jump back fk with cyclops and occasional chippage with mega optic blast… while calling sent drones of course… gamma crush sent as assist… DHC to proton cannon… yea… that happened like 4 times during 6 matches as well… obviously he’d read about sent… watched a few vids… but he was ass at the game… ass at mixup… ass at blocking… clueless in protecting his assists… not good at teching… ass at pretty much everything… so if you don’t stand there and repeatedly eat one of the two things he knew how to do… he was owned. Had he played other characters extensively… he’s know how to mixup… guardbreak… turtle you out… yada… yada… yada… he’d know how to do a lot more when his predictable gameplan failed him.

How did picking sent/mando over and over again help him improve? so if you are not “improving” then how is picking those chars helping you “win”? a couple cheap wins over poor players is not “winning” in mahvel… nor is needing to choose god tier to just barely compete with someone good’s team shoto a mark of a good player. If you know those gods… then pick em and show what you can do! Then THEY will have to pick a better team or step it up… this is a quality exchange between good players…

So what? If you are new to Marvel avoid the top tiers?

Im curious cause when I play these top tiers and lose to some lower tier stuff I feel like shit. Now Im playing with low tier characters I don’t really enjoy at the moment just to get some matches. Is this the best way to learn though?

Not at all I think they are saying avoid them looking for the easy win because it will only help to a point because you wont be learning anything you will be just exploiting their power. Also I know that when I play low tier and I see someone pick up Cable Capcom and Sentinel he will get a way bigger effort from me.

It is annoying right now but learn magic series throws snapbacks team chemistry and DHCs. proper knowledge of those will get you far.

Don’t avoid the top tier… don’t avoid anyone really. You get the most out of learning a lot of characters and a lot of strats. Just ignore the entire concept of tiers and play who you think is fun and/or flows well for you… after that point you’ll be able to re-approach team selection from a new perspective… and instead of HAVING to pick team A or team B to stand a chance you will be able to create teams and strats on the fly… and deal with an ever changing group of possibilities based on what they choose.

This is how you actually get started. Noobs stepping in… creating teams… and asking about them or suggesting them is nigh on pointless since at the lower levels you don’t even know what makes a good team and even if you did… you wouldn’t be able to play them in a solid way.

The first time your in that situation you have to learn what your opp will do… people getting spam happy on AAA… your better bet would be hurricane kick, pause, block assist… and then you have options. Punish the assist or use your assist to nail theirs while you rush them down. Once you’ve shown him how you get around what he’s doing… either he’ll be dumb enough to let you keep countering him… or he’ll switch it up… at this point you’ve got what we call mixup!! Now you can go back to that throw option… see?

Patience and strategy will beat out the overpowered, broken, spam happy, god tier, ect… tactics you read about as long as your outplaying them… keep that in mind. What to do when someone is using the gods AND outplaying you… well… take notes…

No, using top tiers you can learn just fine. But just because you don’t see low tiers in tournament videos doesn’t mean there aren’t some BEASTLY low tier teams/tactics. For example, there are many good anti-magneto, anti-rushdown teams out there. So don’t feel bad. I know where you’re coming from, just stick to you top tiers if that’s who you enjoy playing. But you’ve got to learn solid fundamentals to this game, proper assist usage, stuff like that. Then you will begin to see how to beat the tactics your opponent is using on you.

Umm, I think your problem is in “I LOVE anything but team based fighters like this.” Maybe this just isn’t the game for you, because you gotta use assists to survive. Learn to play with your assists and learn to play AROUND your opponents assist. Be aware of what angles/direction his opponent hits. Be wary at ALL times of when he can call his assist, and train your reflexes to block the second you see his assist come in from the side of the screen.

Here is a scrub (myself) attempting to help out. I played this like decade ago, but just yesterday I picked it up again. I’m like you in that I can throw down in some regular 1on1 fighters.

Last Night I got my ass handed to me 26 times in a row. the last 5 times though i got damn near close to winning or I whooped ass for the first 10 secs or so then the guy switched characters and went into super cheese mode like he was scared of my potential lol.

I started to realize some things and I started doing things that really stepped my game up.

–PREGAME–

  1. YOUR TEAM! The fight starts when picking your team. not really power houses or anything but make sure to cover your bases. MvC2 is like ZONING ON CRACK. get some sort of vertical screen control. Some sort of horizontal. Then like a lock down or something. Dont worry about supers for now.(tho thats super important and i’ll touch on this later).

  2. have at least one speedster, an all around person, and whomever who u know can dish/take damage.

–INGAME–

  1. DONT TOSS OUT ALL YOUR FIGHTING GAME SENSE! DOING RANDOM SHIT IS LIKE DOING FLOWCHART KEN! Be Smart first of all.

  2. THIS IS A TEAM FIGHTER! Tooke me 20 ass kickings to realize i was stuck in SFIV and refusing to use my assists lol. you have no hope if u choose not to. Cover your recoveries and approches with an assist man. Make it hard for you to be touched and realize its the same for them. So time everything right and look at the whole screen.

  3. MIX UP. Man do this shit and try to do it all the fuckin time. This was done to me enough to know that its big. If you play SF do you toss Crossups out the window? No. The same is here. Get an assist like Guile with a projectile. have him fire it while you jump over the person. if you get this tactic down you’ll give people something new to think about. and lead to fuck ups.

  4. LEARN TO DEAL BIG DAMAGE. Look. I realized that sometimes it takes a miracle to get in on the cheeziness that comes in different forms. So when u finally breach the projectil, juggernautrush, sentinelcableshitstorm, youuuu better make damn sure you get in as much damage as you can cause all it takes is a push back on block and u gotta start over. SO GO TO PRACTICE MODE, AND LEARN TO COMBO A JAB OR SOMETHING INTO A SUPER.

  5. LEARN SOME CHEESE/GIMMICKS. Theres a ton of little shit to do to just make the other person say wtf. I said it alot last night. Easiest is when someone dies have an assist do a projectile while you rush under the person jumping in so you mix them up. Also you can hide behind assist moves. So much shit goes on, and can literally hide your character. just take advantage of that. Also, remember that you can recover health by switching out…just…dont wait til ur almost dead. cycle throgh your team somewhat to keep folks healthy or able to go back to 100.

  6. SAFE CHARACTER SWITCH OMG. -_- when ur almost dead either you’ll get chipped to death or the opponent will wait for you to switch out and then combo the person coming in to death. u just fucked your self like i did so many times. I don’t know how i was doing it but you can switch your character out mid combo by sacrificing a bar. so gun for a jab/combo series and then safe switch. hard to see coming from what i saw. TELL ME HOW TO DO THIS!

  7. LEARN TO TECH ROLL!!! SOMEBODY TELL ME HOW TO DO THIS PLEAZE!!! LOL! if you stay where your opponent wants you, ur screwed. period. I dont know how to do this. someone help me.

–POSTGAME–

  1. Realize what worked and what didn’t work. What characters did you like using. Who seemed like dead weight. Whose assists seemed pointless within that particular team? What sort of screen control or protection did you seem to lack? Reaarrange your team and adjust accordingly and repeat all the above.

  2. GO TO PRACTICE. After playing around with a lot of folks and getting your ground game and your mind right, you’ll find that you will see alot more windows open for damage. Time to learn to capitalize. With the characters you got used to previously or started to like, learn how to combo any single hit into a super for the most damage. then learn how to continue that super into a teammates super then into another teammates super. Its annoying to get in like 10 pokes and then lose to 2 pokes leading to 55% damage each. So learn your characters to the point where at least 3 hits is all you need to kill off folks.

  3. GO TO PRACTICE. outside of supers, learn what moves and assists sync well. learn how to exectute them and stuff. go to command list try out all the damn moves -_-. Bastards were doing shit I didnt think characters could do. I swear i saw Cyclops break dancing at one point.

Thats all i can think of for now. again, i was terrible, but i was definitely on the come up and the scrubs i used to lose to, get damn near decimated by me now lol. all it took was getting my ass whooped for a few hours. Watch some people fight and see what gimmicks they came up with (or copied off some video).

  1. There are pretty few ways to safely tag another character in. The idea is that you want something that will hit the opponent just as/just after the character lands from tag in. Spiral knives are the only non super way I know, and Charlie’s mass of projectiles super will do it too. Honestly, these aren’t very common. Other ways to try and somewhat safely bring in another character are using ‘counters’; block a hit, and while in block stun, go from back to down and high an assist button. Your point character gets out, and the character matching the assist button you used instantly is in the same spot doing their assist attack. Costs one bar, cannot be done if you have an assist on screen or recently gone off screen with the ‘ASSIST OK’ still flashing. For bonus points, if the counter in hits, you can cancel it into a super if you like for another meter, like Psylocke’s AAA to flutterbys, Sonson’s AAA to big staff super, Cyclop’s AAA to kick beam super.
Far more common is to do a safe DHC. Have the point character super, then DHC to your second character’s safe super, like Storm’s hail or Sentinel’s HSF. Costs 2 bars. This is why you see Storm as the second character often.

  2. Roll the stick back to down before are right as you hit the floor.
