For those of you who know Moosehummel

I’ve known Billy “Moose” Hummel for about 8-9 years now. I met him playing CvS2 at the arcade in Virginia Commonwealth University. Through lots of sessions over about 2 years, Billy went from an S Groove Terry Rock Ryo pad scrub to an elite CvS2 player, winning tournaments in VA and North Carolina as well as being a rival to the strong Baltimore CvS2 scene.

My favorite quote to describe Moose is that he “talks slow, but thinks incredibly fast.” He is a very patient gamer who manages to stay cool and clutch out wins in almost impossible situations.

Real life stepped in for Billy after he graduated college, he moved up to a manager of his own Gamestop store and got married to a wonderful woman who shared his passion for games, Amanda. They had a healthy baby boy, Elijah, a couple of years ago.

Moose’s talents have stayed sharp however. When Street Fighter 4 released, Moose challenged the winner of his Gamestop store’s SF4 National Tournment event and won handedly. As a manager, he couldn’t participate. His Balrog quickly became recognized as one of the best on the entire East coast, taking 5th at the first East Coast Throwdown and 2nd at NEC10, despite not really getting much practice outside of the occasional Xbox Live battle.

Recently, I had to convince Moose to enroll into the Online EVO tournament.

Time for games had dwindled as 2 months ago, Billy and Amanda welcomed their 2nd child, Caroline Rose, into the world.

However, tragedy struck as Caroline Rose passed away last week… one of the many infants every year who succumb to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS.

When I spoke with Moose, he said he’s “hangin in there” but his wife is devastated.

When any friend is in need, one immediately thinks of how they can help.

An idea came to me to run a memorial fund-raiser Street Fighter tournament to help the family as well as to donate to sids.org.

The tournament will most likely take place in December in Richmond, VA at Strange Matter. Details will be forthcoming.

If you’re a friend of Moose’s, an online competitor, or simply want to extend a compassionate hand, you can:

  1. Come to the tournament in December
  2. Make a donation to Sids.org in the name of Caroline Rose Hummel
  3. In leiu of flowers, you can make a paypal donation directly to the family to help @ moosehummel@hotmail.com

Thanks for your time and compassion.

Very sad news… I will definitely contribute and help out as much as I can. My prayers go out to Moose and his family.

Robin its your boy Burley. As a member of the MD/VA community, a friend of Billy’s and as a father of a 10 month old I will try hard to make it to this. Tell Billy that his family is in my prayers.

Tell Billy man if he to talk or anything hit me up Robin. I will make sure to come to the event, and see what I can do on my end for Billy.

Very sorry to hear this, that’s pretty devastating. I will try to support as much as I can…

Edit:

I’ll learn to read next time, but I’ll be able to donate by next month. My condolences to Moose and his family.

Thanks to everyone in advance for the support. Her burial and memorial will be within the next few days. The hardest thing I will ever have to do in my life is say goodbye. All of SRK has been like a seperate family to me during my college years. Even now, still amazing. One day I hope to have strength to come back and compete again. Keep your friends close and don’t forget to say goodbye to your loved ones you never know when it could be your last

My condolences man. Hang in there and keep your head up.
