For pad players: Your gamepad of choice

I find it extremely hilarious how this guy thinks the Gamecube had a better D-Pad than the PS2. Because of the shape of the controller (or maybe it’s just my thumb) it’s a strain to reach and use for extended periods and because it’s so small, unintentional direction presses aren’t uncommon. The PS series controllers might have an unorthodox design, but in no way are they as bad as the Gamecube’s. Frankly, the ONLY thing I agree with him on is the awkward and poorly suited shape of the PS series’ D-Pads. But that’s just me.

Yessir, GWED was the Japan-only Gundam Wing fighting game for the SNES. It’s the best fighter for the SNES in my book. Fast pacing, has projectiles without having the metagame entirely based upon them, tiers don’t really matter too much (save in the case of Epyon, who is just too good), what more could you want? It even has aerial grabs and guards too!

I’ve been wondering this, but has anyone ever tried to use an N64 pad with an Adaptoid with a PS3? Just curious to see if this works.

ps2 dual shock with the pad claw thing taken out, it makes diagonals easier to hit

Ordered one of the PSX ones on ebay, will have to see for myself.

I go for the Saturn & PS2 Saturn Pads as well as the SNES Pads

My favorite pad actually is the DualShock2, but I haven’t used the one he mentioned though so…

Some of the arguments against the analog stick on that page are ridiculous. Not enough “speed ratings”? What the heck is that anyway? Its analog, so the distance is read and programmed by the programmers. Whatever they decide to put in, they put in.

I actually love the position of the analog stick. Its not the greatest for fighting games by any means, a version with L1 and R1 on the face would be nice or something… but at least the analog on DS2 blows that crappy Gamecube stick out of the water. Hate that thing.

And the X Box controller is just way too uncomfortable for my hands.

Might I add, Genesis 6 Button

This is mine. Pretty good.
Although now that I’m using Vega (Claw) in ST, the cross is getting sticky because several “charge” times.

I was gonna bid on a NeoGeo (6 button) pad I saw on ebay a good while ago, but the bidders pushed the price up too high (around $90-100 IIRC). That was first time I ever seen it too, it looked like a cool alternative to the PS2 Saturn pad I have.

I remember seeing Ascii pads similar to those, but for PS1 along time ago in a gaming mag. The ones you posted are sweet. Where did you get them from and how much were they?

Saturn pad

Although i build sticks, i use a pad for fighting games (CvS2)
i use PS2 pads cose thy’re quite comfortable and make you use all your fingers efficiently.
I have to admit that fighting games aren’t made to be played with pads … my hands often hurt and my thumbs skin has been hard enough lol

Sega Saturn pad. I prefer to use my actual Saturn one, vs the newer USB one. Easier to do EX moves on the original Saturn one. But even the USB one is still better than anything else out there.

well I got them pretty much when they came out, the SNK blue DC was like 40$, and the Cap vs Snk 2000 Pro was a bit less (keep in mind I live in Europe where importers charge like crazy)
(for some reason the Dpad gameplay feeling was much better on the DC one, so I took out that Dpad and put it in the ps1 one, controls got a little beter but not as good as to how the DC one felt :\ )

the NeoCD pad, I got with the japanese KOF94’Rebout bundle when it came out (I preordered form a french importer based in japan http://www.japanpa.com/ so it was pretty much the japanese price, I don’t remember how much though)
it’s a good pad, but the buttons are kinda small. (but it’s the only SNK console thingie you’ll find with 6buttons of the same size, I think.)

I also got a neo geo stick for ps2 (first one) form the same place, I actually didn’t play it much at all, I’m thinking of modding it for 360 and selling it some time…

Cool, thanks for the info.

I’m pretty much done with buying pads at this point (maybe w/ the exception of the SF4 pads) ever since the Saturn usb pads started being sold on ebay.

I did see the KOF94/NeoCD pad bundle you mentioned on ebay which was $89.

I never got to use the superpad 8, but I used a 4 button pad from them that looked similar. I think it’s buttons were visibly different, and annoying IIRC, but the d-pad on the 4 button one was great. That was a really old pad, I played COTA for PC when it was new on it! I’d love to try the superpad 8 some time.

I stick with a DS1 or DS2 pad for pretty much any game that doesn’t rely on 6 face buttons. I don’t have a good pad to 6 button games on. I’m hoping to snag a Saturn pad because it seems like the most natural choice. I remember playing an PSX ASCII pad a long time ago that had 6 face buttons and 4 ultra thin shoulder buttons. I enjoyed that one but imagine the Saturn pad beats it.

Yup, that’s one I was talkin’ about. I was starvin’ for that shit when I was younger but never got it lol.

Yea I used to use these, they’re great feel but they break easily - I remember going through three of them in as many months

I also use this Logitech Precision controller and think its pretty good. I love the rounded d-pad. However, the d-pad gets worn out easily which causes it to stick. I thought they were just dirty so I opened them up and found both had ripped d-pad rubber holder thingamajigs.
I have 3 of these and prefer it to my hrap3 (or at least I don’t get owned as much using these ).

To those of you who own a Sega Saturn style controller for the PS2, which would you say is the better quality one? The Nubytech Limited Edition Street Fighter Controllers or the ASCII Arcade Pads? My friend’s been yearning for a controller with a D-Pad that’s compatible with his PS2 right out of the box as well as having a D-Pad that’s as comfortable to play on as his SNES’s D-Pad. I figured the ASCII or the Nubytech would the the right choice, but which one is the better option? I’d like to know as well since I want to get one for myself too since I’ll be getting an inPin from laugh hopefully soon.

I can’t speak on the ASCII Arcade Pads, but I do own a Saturn PS2 controller and SF controller.

I owned the SF controller first. The only problem I had with it was the placement of the start/selects buttons which are right above the triangle button. I accidentally reset and paused my game a few times, but nothing major. Compared to the size of the Saturn controller, it’s a tiny bit wider, but you’ll notice the SF controller being more thick right away. That wasn’t a problem for me though, it still felt comfortable. I really like the D-Pad on the SF pad. I had no problem pulling off moves.

Once I got a PS2 Saturn controller, I switched back and forth for awhile until I eventually stopped using the SF controller altogether. It feels a lot more comfortable than the SF pad due to it being flat. The thickness of the SF pad just felt awkward after getting used to the Saturn pad. I thought the small X-Y-Z and big A-B-C buttons would be annoying on the Saturn pad, but the size difference doesn’t bother me at all.

I actually used the SF pad the other day just for the hell of it. I wanted to see if I could use it on regular again, but I just couldn’t go back to it now that I’ve gotten use to the Saturn pad.

If you can find a PS2 Saturn pad definitely get it. If not, the SF pad is a good alternative. I hope that helped.

No no, Iron Claw, that helped out a really huge bunch. I think my friend and I are basically sold on the Street Fighter Pad since we can find that one for considerably cheaper than the PS2 Saturn pads. I found only one for sale on eBay and based on the bid pattern so far, I think I can say it’d be cheaper for us to go the D-Sub route with project box since I have a feeling that’d be much cheaper than trying to buy one that isn’t even new. I’m gonna just wait for somebody to say something about the ASCII Pad before I make my final decision on this, but my friend, that overview helped a bunch. Thanks!
