"For Mother Russia!" Zangief Video Thread

Probably you already knew about this, but basically you can stun hugo with 2 hits, i just made a quick video about it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GL-slXyfqMw Except for one really lucky round(on both sides really.) This is nice for the people who asked how to fight vs. Chun. You see how c.lk is really good vs. almost every poke except for Sweep, which is easily tagged by s.lk. Sorry about my friend in the comment sections in the vid :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey man, I was checking out your video vs Phenom and I was wondering, why do you pick U1 vs Bison? also, you shouldn’t try jumping and pressing buttons in the corner vs Bison so much, cr.MK works decently both to whiff and do SPD to get out (then you do splash > cr.LK while buffering U2 in case that he does EX DR or Headstomp) and to stuff scissor kicks, st.MP works decently too but outside of that, blocking should be your to-go option. I also like Lariat in footsies to deter the regular options of st.MK, scissor kicks and some st.HK’s if pressed early, you eat the same punish that you would by pressing a light or mid so I don’t think it’s a huge risk.

Anyways, I’ll check out your video tomorrow morning, thanks

Hi Guys, first time posting in the Zangief section. I was a Hakan main a while ago and now switched to Gief to try something else.

Well, I will post here some casual matches I had it against Keoma (really good Abel).

Hope you guys enjoy, beside the discrepancy of level between him and me. Some tips would be well received. Thanks.

You are right I went a bit nuts in the corner. But this was our third meet in 2.5 weeks.
I beat him 3-2 in Norways WC-Qualifier(Azerbadjan.) and 3-1 at DHS losers semi, but you are def right when we get to the corner I often get too impatient and give away dmg/rounds :3 I hope that Dreamhack will upload their videos soon

  • Work on hit confirms into the LPGH game, which gives you the chance to do damage. Outguess Abel and counter his tornado throw with back dash or neutral jump into SPD/U1. Use a jump cancel SPD to beat tornado throw and falling sky.

  • I recommend you work on this hit confirm: cr.lp xx cr.lk. Far MP. st.lk xx LPGH. Should work on Abel. Otherwise something practical like cr.lp cr.lk xx LPGH. or cr.lk cr.lk xx LPGH.

  • Don’t forget Far MP. st.lk xx LPGH - wonderful footsie/spacing combo. Now and then mix in tick LP SPD off of Far MP.

  • Lack of usage of walking LP SPD. Countless times you could have grabbed but didn’t want to pull the trigger.

  • Lack of usage of cr.lk or cr.lp to stop Abel’s advances, especially with step kick. Could work these into an EXGH option select

  • From your play-style, work in 1-hit tick into HP SPD. When Abel has Ultra, I recommend you tick into regular throw, so you don’t lose to back dash Ultra.

  • Stop doing random EXGH FADC backdash, which ends up costing you 3 bars. Thus, you virtually play meter-less, so you never have the chance to hit confirm into EX Red Hand.

Hi sir. Thanks for the tips.

  • I actually think I have a decent hit confirm but I messed up a lot of combos, but will training that, definetly.
  • I can’t do it the SPD jump cancel, some tips to pull it off?
  • Yup man, I need practice walk and SPD, I dont know if I am slow or dont have confidence to use it, will work on that.
  • Man, I dont know, Step Kick is so opressive, this move is godlike and beat a lot of stuffes, I hate that thing lol.
  • Definetly, I have a poorly meter management, will look for that as well in the next time.

I am having a gret time playing Gief, I love fundamentals e whiffpunishes, I will try post here more often. Er… sorry for the english mistakes by the way.

I made a stun combo video that apparantelly nobody liked except snake eyez :/.
Btw, ill just leave it here. Hope you enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKLFSUygEIY

It’s a good video. I like the music. Great music. I can see you did a magnificent job. Well done.

The problem I find with combo videos such as Rickwa’s, even Desk’s awesome combo videos is, “Will it work on my opponent” I’m always gearing my strategy for high level play. I can’t assume my opponent to be brain dead, even if it were so. Alas, I’ve got to RESPECT them.

The stun combo on Akuma looks like it will never see the light of day, even at a very basic low level. I need to test to see, if it will work as a predictive counter to Akuma’s far double HK. The ONLY situation I could imagine, where the Touch of Combo would be useful vs Akuma.

Well, you know, its better know all this than not :p.
Even if you don’t pull off these in any matches, you just never know.
Glad you like’d it.

I just want to comment about Snake Eyez (Zangief) VS Fuudo (Fei Long) at EVO 2014 Top 8

I think that ultimately, it’s about taking risks, making the right reads.

Snake Eyez was only able to get himself on the scoreboard, when he demonstrated to Fuudo that Fei Long’s back dash is not an entirely safe option. In the prior games, Fuudo practically back dashed to get out of jail “for free” He was able to win the 3rd game when he chased down the back dash with LPGH. Especially after EXGH+1, LPGH I believe is practically unpunishable against jump back, save from an early instant jump back (but they lose momentum, can’t combo)

I think that when you have Super, especially against very strong opponents, if opportunity knocks, you take it and don’t look back. How many chances will you get? Empty the entire bar with EX Red Hand into AS. And work on that post knockdown mix up, to create more opportunities for damage. Press on that advantage for the win. If Snake Eyez had opened that door, he could well have taken one of the earlier rounds or games.

In the first game, jumping towards the end of the round, is a horrible tactic. If Zangief is desperate, he needs to taxi over with LPGH into LP SPD or Ultra 1.

Ultra 2 is definitely the game changer VS Fei Long. You want him to know that Flame Kick, EX Flame Kick, jump and back dash are options that can all be countered by Sibberian Blizzard after EXGH and SPD-MPGH.

Also, I feel Snake Eyez did not capitalize as effectively as he could have, on the LPGH o/s pokes. Sure you will lose or trade with some exchanges against Fei. But for the times you connect, you do significant damage 150 and more importantly you get in and for the guessing game that is in Big Z’s favour. Maybe Snake hadn’t adjusted to the new LPGH o/s, as there were countless times where he could have converted and changed the outcome of the match.

Great read, as always.
Thanks Evans.
Im leaving this (i think) character specific combo on DJ

just another random thing that probably you already knew but i didn’t. focus lvl1 into u2 (on CH)

This Zangief from China does well vs Luffy, interesting shit

vs. Blanka

vs. Chun Li

@Veggey I think you’re an overall better player than this Blanka and it bugged me when I saw you lose to him in tournament. There are a few things you aren’t doing that you could be taking advantage of. I saw you won this set but I think a small bit of optimization would pretty make it not possible for him to beat you without leveling up.

want some tips?

I would like to hear those tips, to be honest.

Anyways, first of all, I’d take U1 out, for me U2 is the superior Ultra in the matchup with the added benefit that FA > U2 works on Blanka. Also, crouching Blanka gets hit by Red Focus, I think it was on game 5 or 6 that you had the chance to go into red focus to end the round and didn’t do it, could have been a personal decision though. Blanka’s cr.HP is -10 from point blank range, there was a cr.HP that you blocked in game…6 or 7? it looked quite punishable.

Overall strategy, it felt a lot like you were being patient and then as soon as you lost the lifelead you tried to green hand your way in and fuck him up, but then sometimes when you were winning by 400 or 500 health you started to jump a lot too. In general my only advice is to stay patient like you do when the game starts, you do great at punishing his dashes and forcing him to throw bad balls that can be punished, but then lose that patience as time goes by, just keep the mindset that you have when the round starts and whiff punish more of his buttons. Hell, I’d go as far as saying that you gave him those 2 games he won, he didn’t do anything too crazy or show good adaptation, you just lost your patience and ran into buttons/balls.

Yes please! I had the worst tournament experience in a long time, I played so weird. Just like MachoRhombus said, I was going in for ever against everyone. Doing crazy Online-Style-Play. haha Im still very sad!

@MachoRhombus‌
I think you are right about the s.hp’s. Something I should look in to, do you punish them consistantly? I think you are correct about the whole how I lose my patience at time, and just straight up GIVE away games. I think youve pointed to my personal biggest flaw as a player, I know what I should do. But I just sometimes DONT do it, even though I KNOW I should do thoose things. Honestly, I think people whining about LPGH, and the talk around it had me convinced I should try to “SECURE” free dmg, and that ultimately made me loose.

Rhombus, when are you coming to dreamhack? D:

I honestly don’t punish them that much since I tend to corner myself due to forcing myself to stay out of it’s range to counterpoke it. When I block it it’s in max range so I don’t think it’s punishable.

The thing that worked for me to kick out that habit was to force myself to do the right things even if it costed me games in casuals, in order to actually learn the matchup and not the player and not get wrecked once I start to go overseas. I would be lying if I told you it doesn’t happen to me ever though, it happens specially vs some players in particular and I need to kick it out.

Dreamhack sounds mad fun but my plan next year is to go to EVO, I just need to tweak some details and in one or two months at most everything should be ready for me to get my visa and just get everything done. 2016 though? could work, I want to go to Europe anyways.

I wrote some stuff up but the forum was fucking up.

Key points were punishing cr.hp and either checking balls with jab/lariat, and identifying mp ball on block to punish because of the large boost in offensive momentum.

Also just not caring about ex upball, but making sure you cover backdash and ex rainbow.
