also the MP headbutt when going up beats that J.HP. It’s more effective than the HP headbutt IMO.
Just started coming to this site, because of all the information and decided to register. I am trying to be a serious Zangief player and wanted to get advice on how to become better. Here are some vids I did for fun if anyone can give me any tips I would be glad to hear them.

I noticed during your first chun li match that there were opportunities you missed to do your ultra.
For example at the end of the last round you exgreenhand and then get cr.HK’d
you could have pulled out your ultra then, it would have beat the cr.HK and give you the win.
That’s not called missing an opportunity. Missed opportunity would be if the other person did something punishable and you didn’t punish. Or if you didn’t take full extent for punishment like if you AA SRKed someone with Ryu and didn’t tag them with an ultra after wards. Those are missed opportunities. You should never depend on whiffed EX hand into ultra. Even whiffed lp GH into ultra is pretty iffy. Good people will never fall for it. They have a million years to react. It’ll only work if they’re sleeping. They are gimmicks people try when they are desperate.
ok, but im just saying, sometimes doing the ultra can actually work and that doing a random one should never be totally abandoned tactic, sometimes it can seem so unorthodox that it actually works.
bigdave629: Try and not to jump too much and learn how to poke with s.strong. I notice that your first move for most of those rounds was a jumping roundhouse - don’t do that and just stay grounded. You also might want to use lariat more for anti-airs against that jump happy Chun-Li (I only viewed the first Chun-Li match so far). Also you may want to learn his BnB’s like c.lp, c.lp, s.lp, s.mp and c.lk, c.lk, c.lk, EX hand or c.lp, c.lp, c.lp, s.lk, ex hand.
I ain’t using Gief anymore but he used to be my main when SF4 first came out at the arcades down here and even I didn’t jump that much. Nice start though! :karate:

I mash hard and guess a lot. That’s why I started playing Zangief in the first place though.

really good vids here I hope to get some vids of myself playing soon to post here…
I recorded myself playing some G1 Championship mode matches yesterday. You can check them out here :

The first video is just there to show that gimmicky FA + Ultra retaliation that I did on some poor Akuma. The other videos are okay.
Dude, what’s with finishing with EX Hand when they are obviously blocking? Then you went and tried to throw when they were obviously getting hit! You got it all backwards!
Ever heard of tick throws? If they jump back/try a reversal move/backdash, the end of the combo will hit. I gambled on it and lost a couple of times, true.
My point was you usually tick throw on blocks, not on hits. You finish the combos on hit. And you don’t end the combos with EX Hand when you see that they are blocking. Not saying you can’t tick throw on hit. It’s just that usually, it’s more worth it to get the guarantee knockdown rather than take a gamble. And you definitely don’t want to finish your EX hand combos when you see that they’re blocking unless you are trying to bait with a DC.
Even FADCing a blockstring is pretty useless.
When I feel that they are not going to do anything, I might try a SPD/EX-SPD reset for more damage or better positioning (with the EX one). But I agree with you, that’s something to work on. I just thought you were totally unaware of what I was trying to do.
I am also aware that those matches aren’t that amazing, I was really just testing my camera and tripod setup. Anyway, I am posting these matches to get better, so all the tips and advices are welcomed.
FADCing a blockstring works, but will only leave you safe with certain characters. I wouldn’t spend 3 EX bars for that kind of strategy really.
I still do EX-hand on reaction from footsie range when I can afford to cancel it though.
Yeah that’s what I meant, its a waste of 3 ex when you know the guy is already blocking.
On a side note, JWong is coming to Hawaii, so I might be able to get some games in with him. Expect to see some vids.

Me against Justin Wong.

Interesting match. I am wondering what was your gameplan in that fight video. I would have personally tried to get in, but it felt like you did not want to risk it. Am I right?
That was the second match. This is the first one. Once Rufus has meter, you pretty much can’t jump…
