people shouldnt call it a fighting game. For Honor is above and beyond that genre. Call of Duty, Overwatch and FIFA aren’t fighting games and they sure are as heck more relevant to the mainstream and sell more and played longer than all the fighting games in the world combined.
so For Honor fans should refer it to a fighting game just to try to get some acknowledgement and interest from fighting game communities, it actually is an insult to the game,
because For Honor aims for a more real and organic level of combat than what fighting games allow, due to the fighting genre and its purist fanbase having a delusional strict and uniform demand of the framework to how a “fighting game” is designed,
and they only will make exceptions only if they are paid a lot of money to call it a fighting game (SSB)
it really is illogical trying to appease the fighting community, when there are larger markets, communities and genres for competitive gaming, that also involve fighting.
Big issue when talking about fighting games is that it seems to me that there are basically two ways people look at the term and they are mutually exlusive. If you’re like most people on SRK when you hear fighting game, you think of a very specific kind of game. There’s frame data, buttons, specials, arcane terminology and a 30 year history. On the other hand you could jus tbe someone who sees a game about two dudes dueling and (pretty understandably) call it a fighting game, after all, there are people, and they are fighting in it.
I still think calling this game a “fighting game” is pretty misleading in the same way that calling the Soulsborne games RPG’s is misleading.
Ulitmatly I don’t think it will matter, as far as I know for honor doesn’t have local VS mode, which kills it’s viability as an FGC style game. As much shit as Smash gets it still has a community and local style of play that is much closer to traditional fighting games than what for Chivalry/M&T/For Honor style games do. We’re not gonna be seeing this game at tournaments, let people call it whatever they want.
Raider is for throwing people off of shit I think. If Shugoki’s gimmick is armor into one hit KO grab, Raider is supposed to toss people into spike walls and shove them off of cliffs. Seems like they built him around that idea.
Speaking of ring outs, some of them in this game are absurd. I got knocked into ankle deep water and my dude instantly died.
The problem with the “throw people off shit” plan is that once you get used to it, throw teching in For Honor is extremely lenient. Not to mention that depending on your character, outright dodging them is super easy. This goes doubly if all you do is hang out by a ledge all game, since I’m going to go in prepared to tech. Without reliable attacks he can throw out, the Raider has no way of keeping people on their toes. Since all his attacks are highly reactable and he can only get his big damage off throws under very specific circumstances, all you really need to do is remember to tech.
Shugoki’s command grab is actually one of his more ass tools. Unless your opponent is so goddamn stupid he commits to a frontal attack when you’re sitting on armor (and he isn’t a Warden or Peacemaker, who will just blow through your armor even if they commit), he’s going to dodge it. Hell, you can’t even get command grabs off guard breaks or parries. You can’t even get them as whiff punishes. Not to mention a whiffed grab takes away a third of your health and damage taken increases drastically once you’ve lost your armor, because fuck you for wanting to play a big guy. Shugoki’s more about slowly whittling the opposition down using his headbutt or the baseball swing (which also incidentally may be better than the Raider grab at punting people off ledges, gives you your armor back and will always connect after a parry unlike the command grab).
The more I fight the Warden the more blatantly apparent it is that this character is fucking cancerous to fight and requires little to no invest in time to understand the most effective playstyle.
Use top light
Use zone attack
If top light hits, shoulder charge mix-up forcing a backroll
I love every character barring him, he’s stupid to fight.
The down time between matches in this game is awful holy shit

It’s like I’m playing SFV
I don’t want to go all mustard race but I get the feeling that all the menus and unnecessary shit between matches is just there to pad out the loading times for the consoles
More or less what I figured. Icelandic is the closest we have to Old Norse still in existence (I’ve heard it said Icelandic people can actually read the old Viking sagas in their original language and mostly understand it, though clearly not in rune form). While I don’t speak the language, I know enough that I can tell that’s not actually written Icelandic since they use a different alphabet, which would clearly lead to issues since you don’t even have the same pronounciation between what’s written and said. So the vikings still use three separate languages (not counting the in-game runestones, which are a whole other can of worms entirely).
had some time playing this game, how do I perform special moves in for honor?
commands say press L3 and R1 or L3 and R2 at the same time, but nothing special comes out?
The only poke that comes out is the same when I only press R1 or R2 on the PS4 pad.
I was a bit confused at first too. The prompts are just poorly written. Generally it’s not L3 or R3 (with the exception of sprint moves) it’s push the stick in a direction. For example, the Nobushi’s dodge poison thingy is A+any direction but back and then RB. In other words, dodge and attack. It’s hard to say without knowing the specific character, but if you watch the How To videos for your character it should be easier to parse out what you need to do. Also, remember that the attacks that require you to press L3 are sprint attacks and require you to not be locked on to an enemy.
My problem is with the matchmaking. The matches themselves run from great to excellent, but fuck me if that matchmaking system isn’t Capcom tier garbage. Sometimes it seems to randomly freeze and force me to restart the game without telling me. Sometimes it decides not to find anything for minutes, only to find a match in three seconds when I quit out. Sometimes it can’t find any players at all regardless of connection and skill level despite the fact that I know there are thousands and thousands playing. I’m taking a big gamble here and saying it’s probably uPlay, because fuck uPlay.
Seriously, why the fuck is Steam and GoG the only digital gaming clients that actually work? Origin is garbage, Windows Store doesn’t fulfill the purpose of a store half the time since you can’t actually get the product you paid for, uPlay manages to fuck over my recently upgraded beast of a PC when I’m playing fucking 360 ports, Rockstar Social Club is fucking cancer, though I guess it’s not a store.
Considering PC uses uPlay and the game has no dedicated servers, that wouldn’t surprise me. That shit is about as stable as a hundred year old man on stilts in a hurricane.
Raider and Shugoki are so much fun just to dick around with, my W/L has completely tanked but me and a friend have been messing around in 2v2s doing dumb shit like ledge kills only or Shugoki bear grab kills only.
I can’t stress how badly I want the Warden nerfed though. Don’t give a fuck if it’s day 2, he’s dominating the meta atm and it’s not gonna change until his top light gets slowed down and his shoulder charge mix-ups either get adjusted or go.
Oh someone asked me for a new tier list -
Tier 1+ -
Warden
Tier 1 -
Warlord, Orochi, Valkyrie
Tier 2 -
Kensei, Peacekeeper, Nobushi, Berserker
Tier 3 -
Shugoki, Conqueror, Raider, Lawbringer
Anything between tier 1 to 2 is a small gap in viability, big gaps between tier 1 and 3. Giant gap between the Warden and everyone else.
Only character I’m not sold on is the Lawbringer, but I think he’s not good. Could have some potential but I can’t see it.
Conqueror is cool as fuck, but man does he suck. Like, at least with Shugoki I feel like there are match-ups where he’s really solid and I can get in my opponent’s head. I’m not even sure what Conqueror is supposed to be doing to get his damage. His light infinite chain is unlikely to get enough hits in that it becomes fast enough to wreck someone and I’ve had trouble consistently getting high damaging stuff off his shield bash. I guess he’s more built for Dominion play where he can just turtle zones?
He has superior block on his regular block. Regular blocks = free guard breaks(inconsistent across characters). Me and a friend tested it and when blocking the Conqueror doesn’t get guaranteed guard breaks from every attack, only some will give him a guaranteed guard break follow-up. His design is the most simple in the game, he’s the easiest character to play.
Can’t feint though, so he’s bad when attacking and has to play entirely on defence at high level. Mix that with slow attacks and a slow unbreakable attack(shield bash) and you have yourself a worse version of the Warden.
