Fooled into Believing the World Has Ended

Channel 4 just aired Derren Brown : Apocalypse

For those who don’t know who Derren Brown is, he is mostly known as an illusionist/hypnotist from England. His shows have an emphasis human psychology, society and culture rather than the usual mind control tricks you tend to always see.

Anyway, the premise for Apocalypse is to trick someone into believing the world has ended with the aim that at the end of the show they change their outlook on life for the better.

Without spoiling anything, in this episode Derren fools the subject into thinking Great Britain has been hit by a major meteor and that those that didn’t perish in the flames were infected by a virus carried by the meteors.

Some parts seem so cruel, but then in other parts when he him change right before your eyes makes it seem worth it. If the previews are anything to go by the series looks really entertaining, I’m blown away by how much work went into this.

episode 2 airs next Friday

The Mayans have been working on an Apocalypse trick too.

Westboro Baptist Church pulled the same PR stunt too.

My prof pulled the same stunt with my grades too.

Watching it now. So far what annoys me is they picked a damned 21 YEAR OLD! Dude is still a baby practically, trying to find himself in life and decide what he wants to do with himself. Of coarse he takes so much for granted, its not like he’s had a ton of life experience yet. The parents are just as full of crap if they seriously let their son carry on like that with such poor manners. Its obvious the poor slob is just wallowing in confusion and really needs that guiding hand in his life to show him how to put his potential to good use, and those two dolts aren’t exactly doing their job.

I’m sorry but this just annoys me. They’re billing it like its supposed to teach some lost the soul the importance of life, and they just picked some immature young’in who was bound to go through this phase anyway. What a waste.

I want to see a late 20 or early 30’s guy still screwing up badly. Because then its obvious at that age that he really has fallen through the cracks, so to speak, and is in need of a wake-up call.

Edit: Furthermore, again this immature dolt is only 21 and likely naive as all hell. Fooling someone like that would NOT be that big of a feat.

Does the Guile “I’m not impressed” arm gesture

Does the UK have no privacy laws? in the U.S if someone places hidden cameras in my house and hacks my phone you better believe I’m taking there ass to court and milking it for every penny they have.

i’m into it

I agree and disagree. It would be good to see someone older, but at the same time this might be one of those “get them whilst they’re young” things. It’s also not as if he has bad parents his older brother is doing quite well for himself, and the subject hasn’t made the kind of life decisions that would see him fit for an episode of World’s Strictest Parents.

I think they’ve made a good choice, he isn’t a bum (he has a job, and goes to work everyday), he is just a typical guy stuck in a state of arrest development, he is more relatable than a full grown man child IMO.

Yes, that’s why they had full permission from the parents and brother.

He’s just too young and has not yet developed that ummm, “appreciation” about life. Its only natural. Do they expect every 21 year old to be fully responsible, mature, productive adults with their sh*t together?

When i was 21 i was screwing up a lot worse but then i kinda had the same problem this guy had: Two foolish parents that left me to my own devices, even when it was clear i was wallowing in my own filth, so to speak. Not unlike this guy.

I think it boils down who would be more relatable. Personally I think a 30+ man child is an extreme, most people at that age have their shit together, however lots of young adults are still finding themselves like you say. It’s better to have an intervention at that age rather than letting another 10+ years go by wasted.
Also from the viewers perspective, I’m going to make the assumption that watching a 30+ year old man behaving like a teenager doesn’t make for good television and you certainly won’t be rooting for him, but then I do wonder why Hell’s Kitchen & Kitchen Nightmares US keep getting renewed…

In the UK the individual being filmed doesn’t need to give his/her own consent to being filmed on private property and have his property be tampered with? damn lol.

I don’t know the exact law, but it probably differs because he is still being looked after by his parents. Plus we haven’t gotten to the level of the US where people will abuse the legal system for financial gain, we don’t tend to sue our own parents for embarrassing us lol.

BTW do yourself a favour if you are enjoying the show, don’t do any internet research just keep tuning in each week.

Show is hilarious.

We are going to teach him divergent thinking and creative problem solving.

Using only this empty bottle and slice of cheese, he is going to have to escape this locked room. He will need to take this length of string holding a window shut, at which point, the room will begin to fill with raspberry jelly. he will then need to use the bottle on the jelly, and catch a bee. Then, using the cheese slice, lure a mouse out of the wall, and tie the bottle, with bee, using the string from the window. He will then hurl the mouse/bottle/bee through the window at a nearby sleeping bear. The bee will sting the bear and its panicked rage, smash a hole in the wall. This is but 1 of over 40 puzzles he must solve.

They should have given him a gun with no bullets and a flashlight.

lol this is why gamers are more likely to survive a zombie apocalypse than any other type of person

That is some high level yomi right there.

ElderGOD would not go through all that.

ElderGOD would hit the wall with the Elder Uppercut and send one side of the wall that decided to get in ElderGOD’s way flying to the moon. The bear would kneel as ElderGOD leaves the locked room in search for a strawberry sundae, because strawberry sundaes are awesome.

One would think that, but then you see the dumbasses who are even older on MTV, and the ratings they pull…

Anybody else find it really weird that this show displays on national tv:

a) a hacker that is employed by “big business” to hack into someone’s phone which breaks all kinds of laws including the carriers’ ToS and the user’s privacy? Sure, the privacy thing may not be an issue but I personally have all sorts of shit in my phone that I don’t want that level of “hacker” to be anywhere near. I’d flip the fuck out once I found out that a hacker was left alone with my phone. Especially one that can do a “man-in-the-middle” and also hack the shit out of all my apps. Oh, on that note, said hacker also hacked his apps (including the BBC News app lol) as well publish fake stories from nasa and other “credible sources”

b) This TV show actually employed seriously expensive hackers as well as multiple other mother fucking TV SHOWS. I’d love to know he broadcasted a TV show to only HIS tv.

c)

This. It’s really weirding me out how this hoax is being pulled over this guy for everyone’s entertainment. I’ve seen weird TV shows but this takes the cake. I’m not saying all of this to sound like another annoying conspiracy-theorist. I just can’t help but wonder how many people are susceptible to something like this. Everyone in this thread is talking about how some lazy-ass 21 year old was the perfect target for this experiment but I doubt they’d have to be that selective to find someone they could fool with that hoax…

PS: The only thing I don’t actually like about this show are the stupid static noises they play whenever Derek Brown is explaining his shit. Besides that, it’s a really interesting show

Hahah lol. You have to be really naive to belive smthing like that.

By that age you should already have a base of what you want to become and do. Or at least have some sort of self growth. The guy is just a 15 year old boy in a 21 year old’s body.

Edit: And come on… not knowing when the people you have lived with for your whole life are acting just means your plain confused even if the world isn’t ending.
Edit2: How did that guy put him to sleep by touching his mouth with his bare hand on the buss?
Edit3: Sorry but you have to be mentaly retarted to believe a zombie apocalypse is possible, this show is fake as hell.

#1 Got to remember how much prep went into this, not as if Derren showed up on their doorstep that morning and said, lulz lets troll your son.

#2 This is a thing Derren has been doing for awhile now, when he first hypnotizes them he leaves something in their mind which allows him to still have control over them at a later time.

#3 lol yeh I thought the zombie thing was a step too far too. I reckon if that were me, I would instantly realize the whole thing was bullshit, it’s just too Hollywood (waking up in a hospital after the world has turned into zombies was done in 28 days laters and Walking Dead). However being dripped those news stories for an entire week maybe enough to make me a believer.
They should have just kept to the killer disease without throwing in the zombie term and zombie like behaviour, that to me would also make it reasonable to not run anyone over during the getaway.

It’s weird that this comes up, because yesterday morning I had an apocalyptic dream. Which made me look a few things up. I’ve had no knowledge of this show till last night reading this thread. I don’t watch television so it’s not something that’s just leaked into my sub conscious
