Flying While Intoxicated: The MvC3 Iron Man thread

I dunno about super jump height. Wishful thinking, but maybe they’ll make his j.:s: into a ground bounce eventually. That would help him alot and god knows he needs it more than Derpinel ever did.

I am really digging Iron Man’s Magneto-like flight canceling into a 50/50 high low situation… I need to implement this into my game more.

Tri jump M, cr. M, flight… you can either go for a flight S for overhead, or cancel flight right after it was activated and go for the cr. L, cr. M, S into aerial combo of your choice.

To add another layer on top of it, for my team especially, I can go into flight, call viper OH assist, cancel flight into cr. M and get an unblockable out of it… although I am having troubles trying to follow up after it hits. I might try and do a repulsor blast to suck them in for a launch.

Im sure you could do the same for a low hitting assist unblockable. Activate flight, call low, flight. S… BAM!

I know this isn’t “breaking news” by any means. But im in my baby steps with my IM so I just thought I would write down my thoughts and see what everyone else sort of thinks of this. Too laze to look back at 400 posts to see if this has been discussed before lol.

So yea last week was mainly getting my execution down with some basic flight BnB’s because IM’s execution is definately one of the tougher in the game. Now im looking more into set ups for opening people up.

Also is Cr. H good for keeping Ammy out? I was thinking just spamming that over and over and then when she goes for her string bean approach hit repulsor blast and if it hits follow up with a combo and if it doesn’t then do Repulsor spread to back her off. Haven’t tried this out yet but what are everyones strat against the dog?

EDIT: The reason why I wrote down what you can do for his flight cancel mixups mainly was because I wanted to know if there were better approaches than what I am currently doing. Thats why I jotted that down. So yea if there is a better way to do it then that help would be appreciated! In no way was I trying to be like “Dude check out what I found with Iron Man’s flight cancels!!” lol

but i’m starting to put some flight in off the tri-jump m and flying really low to the ground so i can hopefully have a tricky overhead situation, but i find it almost to be just straight up too slow - but having more options is always a good thing!

i’ve got the modified krispy down well enough where I’ll be going for that on my hitconfirms this upcoming Saturday at our tournament. I’m excited to play again now that my iron man is coming along and my hulk got way better.

the flight stuff off a overhead is because you can get a tripple overhead , or go for a fake overhead , which so far nobody has been blocking

due to cold star I get 3 mix up attemps to open them up and I try to throw a lot of shit in that time

Yeah I was just fiddling around with this and figured out a few ways. They’re not super easy, but definitely feasible in a match with a bit of practice. They mostly take the form of the potential BnB from a while back, but with a few differences.

Honestly the more I play iron man… I really think rush down is among the best in the game. I would go as far to say I wouldn’t be surprised if IM was top 15 or even 10. People think he is ass mostly because they can’t seperate “hard to use” from “bad”.

My IM is still horrible but I am getting success oh his basic tri jump/fly cancel offense. Still need to get better at hit confirming though.

Once I get my niche and feel for the character I can finally start to implement the more advanced combos for maximum damage.

Oh yea and is it just me or is repulsor blast like ridiculously good?

You are completely right. He is kind of like a different version of Magneto as far as mobilities and ways getting in. He just hits a bit harder but lacks the loops. He is just so damn awkward, its totally unnecessary lol. Eventually though he’ll become a lot more viable, especially because of his assist.

Iron Man is a great character that is only looked down due to the difficulty of playing him. He can rush down, but I prefer to play him as a battery. He’s got some great zoning tools like Unibeam H and any version of Repulsor spread.

I’ll need to practice Iron Man more than any other character…my execution is still sloppy with him and I’m still learning to incorporate flight into combos.

I play him alot too guys and he’s simply not that good. Not terrible, but certainly not good.

He just doesn’t have the speed and versatility of Magneto. Magneto has better zoning tool, faster, better mixups, a much better lvl 3 and DHC glitch. Iron Man has the look :slight_smile:

i say repulsor blast to repuslor >spread is good if they like to push buttons when the oncoming characters is coming from a dead character in the corner.

Also im loving his repulsor spread more, for example, if they block my blockstring like , cr a, cr, M, I do a Hard repulsor blast>spread, sometimes it catches them advancing guard, they might get hit by it or if it block, it be safe anyways.

Will you explain then why you don’t think he is good?

while he wont ever be the best in the game , he’s still solid , fast , and mobile , he has great normals , good mixups (alot of them are not being used by anybody) and he hurts

you just have to play perfect with him 100% with somebody like magneto if you fuck up you can either fix it on the fly or get a os throw into more bullshit
his launcher is not great , and spacing is a huge huge issue

so iron man in this game is pretty much the same as iron man in the past one?

He was much much better in Marvel 2 actually.

I dunno if I need to run down the list of why he’s not great; it’s already been done to death, but here goes:

Terrible dash for a supposed rushdown character. The fact that he can’t cancel it into normals until something like the 11th frame is ridiculous. Not only is this bad for his offensive game, but it also makes comboing into Proton Cannon even more inconsistent.

Unreliable, spacing dependent combos that only inflict average damage. Yes, 750k is not that great in this game considering his other weaknesses. Comboing into repulsor blast is not much of a solution because it kills his damage even more. It’s not so much the execution requirement that makes them bad, it’s just that you need to be able to spot the correct spacing before starting them, which is something they basically did away with for everyone else after Marvel 2. How often do you see other characters whiff parts of their chain in the scrubfest that is MvC3? Which brings us to…

Probably the worst launcher in the game. If it was only terrible on block or had awful range or was slow as shit, it might not be so bad, but the combination makes hit confirming needlessly difficult and you often end up whiffing it. If you get it blocked, prepare to die. Against most characters like Wesker who can just fire and forget, flowcharting their way to a win; it just becomes that much more apparent how much of a liability it is.

He has a subpar tri-jump. Honestly almost no-one in my scene gets hit by it anymore, it’s that slow. Canceling into flight to mix it up is a gimmick, only it’s slower than Magneto’s fly into S and I rarely see anyone get hit by that already. He can’t even really OS into throw off his airdash because his airthrow combos are very height dependent and usually require you to still have the airdash available.

Unibeam is not a good projectile when stacked up against the likes of Task’s arrows, Magneto’s disruptor, Wesker’s gun. Plasma beam, Trish’s low voltage, Deadpool’s guns, Modok’s psionic blast, etc etc.

He loses to runaway.

He can’t start or end (apart from whiffing a level 3 and even that’s difficult) the DHC glitch.

His smart bombs are practically worthless as zoning tools since they only have 1 arc.

iron man’s flight s or fly unfly m is faster than anything magneto can do with fly and about 10 x less obvious which is the most important bit

also if timed correct it stops you being pushed
blocked

I don’t think its fair to call him a rush down character at all aswell , imo he’s more like taskmaster as in can do borh then forces a mistake then puts on the gloves ,
