Where is Predator? Terminator? Alien? Deliverance? Good Will Hunting? Bambi? Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs? And the like? QUALITY. GENUINE EXPERIENCE. I am OFFENDED to go to the movies today and be put through two hours of artistic torture that satisfies the half-soused rabble who lap up these inane “films.”
Movies today are essentially Cliffs Notes concerning morality “with major plot twists and developments and character deaths tossed around in a matter of a few lines” and make the viewer do a “mental recap to remember who died and how.”
To be honest, I haven’t seen anything nearly as good since then. Dat Scorcese. American Hustle came out in the same year, but it was pretty mediocre in hindsight. Bale was great, but most of the supporting cast was garbage.
It’s the era of franchises, interconnected universes, and just plain marketing to China by shoehorning something anything at all China-related. It’s only gonna get more obvious from here. You can always dig up the classics or discover old gems that you never heard of.
EDIT: A lot of similarities to the “AAA” trend in videogames, trying to please all audiences in several markets for max revenue.
To be honest with you, I thought Wolf of Wall Street was great! Just seemed like the 80’s and 90’s had insane blockbusters every year that were actually…GREAT!
Not like the constant run-of-the-mill crap that gets thrown around every second today and is then heralded as a masterpiece.
The teaser trailers of yesteryear rape the actual movies of today:
And don’t even get me started on CGI…OH MY GOD IS THAT REAL? IT’S SO DETAILED OMG IT’S REAL!!!
But, it’s obviously not.
BUT IT’S SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DETAILED.
I also love how the actor’s emotions/acting/body positioning/facial expressions “SORT OF” match up with the CGI.
You want me to “suspend my disbelief” with CGI…kind of hard to do when it’s a constant bombardment of it.
Nah ha! You’re old!
The things you like are no longer culturally relevant and no one cares!
All that’s left is to come to terms with the fact your time has passed and that a younger generation is in charge of pop culture now.
Let go and watch your tastes fade into obscurity like your parents and their parents did before them.
I also talked about how I hated modern CGI VS stop-motion animation or the way they’d “cheat” visual effects by creating actual, detailed models/costumes that they’d used to use.
