Fighting game with the best (performing) online mode?

For some of us, getting rollback netcode in every single fighting game isn’t just a calling, it’s a crusade.

In any case, if I recall correctly, BlazBlue uses a 5 or so frame buffer for online. It works, but it’s not exactly the same as offline.

Thank you sir! I don’t know why the world is sleep on HDR’s netcode. Best I’ve ever experienced outside of GGPO on the PC.

BB’s netcode is “good” but is significantly overestimated IMO

i would not put it above PC GGPO like narcowski did, and not above SC5 like d3v and swedish chef did

putting sc5 in the same tier as sf4 and mvc3 is silly, you overestimate how much the buffer is needed. BB has a similar buffer anyway.

If you hold a button down, you get the same input for 5 frames. This system exists online and offline. Also, I’m not sure if the ASW netcode is rollback-based or not, but it works very well with AH3 too, and that game has no such buffer.

i only know that ponder was a consultant when they were developing the netcode, at least from what the posts of the Aksys rep on 2009 implied by that time

Why is SCV so low? Its about on par with VF5FS

I think bb has the best netcode

This. Fucking this right here. That is hands down the absolute worst netcode I have ever had the misfortune to experience. Everybody should forget about MvC3/UMvC3, MK9, and KoF13. If you don’t live within several blocks of somebody, then you’re going to get lag, and a lot of it. What the hell was French Bread thinking?

I tried netplaying MBAACC over a LAN once, just to see if it was capable of delivering passable performance under optimal conditions. It was still terrible.

hdr and mvc2 online are the same, there is no difference from what I remember. Same design team and same net code style

the main problem with games online is that the game itself has to be slow enough to not be affected so much. Its why even though mvc2\hdr are the same, hdr works better. hdr\st is slow enough that its not as affected as much as mvc2 is. Developers are starting to take that into account more its why BB is pretty decent online as well as skullgirls. The developers took online play into account FIRST, then they designed their game around it.

Of all the games i’ve played online GGPO on PC then skullgirls is a very close 2nd. When the games are being ran under proper conditions, both of those net codes go above and beyond what capcom has ever done on their own. which is kind of sad honestly. When someone can homebrew something and its 10x better than what capcom has done in a decade, their is a massive problem they refuse to address.

It’s more than just latency/lag though, make sure the game you pick also has a good matchmaking system, or at least good lobbies and alot of players.

PC GGPO is a really great pure experience, but it can be hard to get players or match variety with some games, so that limits it.

In the same way, the lack of real lobbies can make getting a match in skullgirls an exceptionally frustrating experience.

Best overall online experiences for me were BB and HDR hands down, they don’t have those problems, and still play silky-smooth usually.

People who are saying HDR, I’m guessing it’s 360 version.

for me anyways yes, is the PS3 ver bad?

(also I checked, guy has an xbox and xbox stick, so we’re safe :D)

man ive played them all and in my honest opinion

Blazeblue, Skull girls, and SC5 take the cake.

Followed by SfxTk, SF HDR and 3SO

edit: SF4 AE

its not as good as some people would like but i blame the idiots who run their ps3 wireless more than anything, since the game can be a hit or miss

After whatever patch, it got pretty buggy like lobbies and invites have problems and rollbacks happening more frequently.

I’m going to pick up BBCSE for the 360 and Skullgirls for steam whenever it comes out. I actually already own HDR but haven’t played it in forever, and my wife bought SCV a few weeks ago (she really likes going through the story mode on those games), and I have VF5 free from my PSN subscription, haha. So I have a plethora decent online fighting games and didn’t realize it.

What’s sad to me is this product description of KOF on Amazon (it’s “from the manufacturer”):

What a straight up lie. o_O

It’s cool there’s kind of a renaissance of fighting games going on at the moment, but I don’t think that’s going to last if leading companies like Capcom can’t support stable online play. I feel like the number of people who have access to friends who can play locally at consistent times has to be a relatively small population compared to the number of people who would like to play online.

Me for example - Atlus and Capcom both probably lost a sale due to it.

Just to remind everyone, 3SOE is getting fixed in a patch soon which should bring numeric ping times and Skullgirls style regional matchmaking. It won’t make up for the horrible interface, but it’s a start. The same features are are also going to be in MvCOrigins.

HDR XBL is def top tier

IaMP with Rollcaster has the best netcode.

On console the best netplay I’ve experienced is VF5FS, it plays way better than skullgirls as it seems to be carefully designed around the frame buffer inherent in VF as far as I can tell. I’ve yet to drop a combo I wouldn’t have or get hit by a move I wouldn’t have.
