Zero, but from what I’ve learned and read the FGC has room to grow but clearly needs business savvy representatives to get it going. MrBGuy seems knowledgeable and a perfect person to help represent this sort of future progress to grow fighting games as a huge eSport.
Okay, people are coming at you pretty hard so I’ll give you one more chance to prove to everyone that you aren’t complete moron.
**Here are some actual known problems with a random select tournament, how would you fix them? **
They are incredibly boring to watch, not even as a stream monster, but standing right behind the players, because you know that you aren’t watching top level play or the best that these players can offer.
The inevitable match where both players get a character that they are completely unfamiliar with. Nothing like playing in a tournament where you have to figure out a character’s normals on the spot; it may be fun to do at someone’s house, but not in a tournament where you had to pay to enter. And again it is absolutely horrible to watch.
The also inevitable match where one player gets their main and the other player gets a character that they know nothing about. Unless there is a HUGE difference in skill between the two players this match will always go to the player who got their main. Nothing like seeing a great player go out to someone clearly worse than them due to a random event out of their control to add legitimacy to a tournament.
The also inevitable match where random selects a 7-3 or 8-2 matchup. How fun is it to end up on the Gief side of the Zangief Sagat match up when you don’t even play Zangief. Sure a Zangief master can make this fight managable, but if you are only slightly familiar with gief you just got handed a loss due to something completely out of control.
Grand Finals usually have a complete lack of hype, because everyone else is super salty about the BS way that they lost.
People don’t respect the outcome of random select fighting game tournaments and if you’ve ever played through one you would probably already know why.
I think he said he gave up on the random select idea. Instead he has been suggesting banning characters who are “cheap” and “overrepresented in streams” and now he’s just asking for advice.
But that’s just as dumb. That’s what patches/sequels/expansions are for, so we don’t end up with Hildes everywhere. Besides, what’s considered “cheap” is subjective. Imagine going to a VF tourney where Akira is banned, but not everyone feels he’s cheap/overpowered. We can’t start banning characters simply because a player can’t get around something. The only characters who should be banned are the ones that break the game.
The guy just admitted that he never was in a tournament, yet he’s here to give suggestions. That’s like asking me to give suggestions on how to make the San Marino football team play better at the Euro Cup, despite the fact that I’m not good at football, never coached a professional team nor do I even live in San Marino.
I did not say new players have to stay out, I said changing the rules to make new players happy at the cost of old players is unacceptable. Basically I’m not okay with new players jumping in the community and telling everyone how to run things or how it should be when flat out they don’t know. Building a community is nice, destroying your old community isn’t. What new players have to understand is that no one is more interested in what will keep the community growing and getting bigger than the people who have been supporting it for half a decade or longer. Along with that is maybe new players don’t exactly know what is of the best interest of the community at large. And no personal attacks against anyone, but it is also often the case that new players don’t see or understand their scrubby mentality clouding their judgement and making them want to argue for things that are not in the best interest of the community, but instead their own interest. Forcing people to effectively not have a main character does nothing but help people who can’t beat someone’s main character. You can argue that it helps diversity, but that’s not something the tournament community wants, it’s something the casual audience and stream monsters want.
I just want to say that the only games that run worse on PS3 are the SF4 series and MVC3 series mostly because capcom can’t put their act together, all the others games run equal or better in some cases on PS3, you are also forgetting the benefits that the DLC can be shared on 2 consoles (it was 5 before), so you spend less on DLC characters for example than with the 360, or how the 1st generations (even the current ones) have a greater failure ratio than the ps3 have.
Finally, fuck Xbox and fuck microsoft
Edit
Another thing, PSN+ can end releasing those games for free
I agree that the community needs to grow, but how do we get more competitive players instead of more stream monsters and mindless fans of maximilian/gootecks/whatever ? Because that’s what the route has been so far, and that’s what the LoL route will keep bringing.
