Fighting Game Question

base the game on kof entirely

like if kof 98 and kof 2002 had a baby

because kof XII is not looking like it

The only thing I’d say is: keep the universal systems to a minimum and try to make every character as unique as you can without using some catch-all system that ends up being too dominant or a ton of systems that alienate players.

i’d like to suggest the opposite of what others are saying about universal stuff and say:
no, DO add many universal things.
it makes the game easier to balance, hence leading to more interesting gameplay.
also, once you have a very nice universal framework, suddenly you can add a shitload of ridiculous stuff because the universal framework helps to prevent issues with balance

and makes it boring as shit, so no.

Yeah, fuck universal framework. We TOTALLY don’t need things like walking, jumping and blocking.

That’s not what I meant, and you know it.

Imagine if every character had the same shit… oh wait… Psychic Force… go play that, and you’ll see why Universal Framework is garbage.

basic things like what you mentioned are just assumed to be in the fighter (once again, psychic force fails here, as there’s flying, ehrgeiz fails because there’s running - much like power stone, and one of those doesn’t have blocking)

Power Stone is not a fighting game, so I don’t even know why you brought that up. It doesn’t matter whether a system has flying, floating or running, etc. All that matters is that its implemented into the system well enough so that it feels natural and allows you to do base-one strategy. But those games you cited didn’t do this well, so…yeah.

Yeah jumping, walking and blocking are the same as Custom Combos, Parries, Guard Cancel Front Steps, Just Defense, Roman Cancels, Bursts and other similar systems.

WOW! you’re dumb. That wasn’t even close to my point.

I brought that up because SRK likes to be technical twits about EVERYTHING, so if I said “every game has walking”, I GUARANTEE some dumbass would have been like, “oh there’s power stone”…

The only game that I meant to relate to the universal system is psychic force.

I mean…

Cronopio’s post is PROOF that people on this site don’t know how to NOT take things so seriously. Kayin was obviously joking around, but Cronopio has to take the shit seriously like Kayin’s all sorts of dumb.

Actually, I’ve seen people make some okay arguments for citing Power Stone as a fighter, much like people argue Smash is a fighter (not going to get into that one), so quit throwing personal attacks at people. If you only meant to relate to Psychic Force in your post then that’s all you should wrote in your post, but you lumped all three together in the same sentence. Its not other people’s fault they misread the intent of your post.

Mixah:

Uh, why are you jumping on me when I’m not even arguing with you?

I’m making a point. Who’s jumping in any bickering that you and Kayin might have. I’m just on the side, commenting that you made an attack on a joke, which proves that you’re a dipshit.

EDIT:
better in your own language then?

Usted es estpido

I don’t understand what the fuck you are talking about but OK.

Sooooo

back on topic:

Universal systems = bad
Variety of combo systems = great
Let all characters delve into these systems, but don’t make it solely based around that system

for an example…

universal systems are like Psychic force, where it’s really just, pick whoever, spam fireballs… no variety. game’s fun, but gets boring by match five.

variety of combo systems, much like capcom vs snk 2. you have 6 completely different styles to choose from. each character chooses from these… but because you can only use one in a fight at a time, it becomes a match where you have to counterbalance each other’s grooves. Blanka, for example, can be deadly in 4 of the grooves, whereas Sakura is best in A and Decent in C. This still keeps all the characters different though.

What Psychic force did wrong is that every character is essentially the same character. Try playing Street Fighter 2, where everybody only picks original sagat… What do you get? Marvel vs. Capcom 2…

Please, we have one… don’t make another MvC2… Thanks.

Well Antoine, I hope you’ve learned something, i.e. why never to ask SRK about anything. If you’re making an independent fighting game, don’t worry about putting in grooves and stuff, that’d be too much of a pain to balance, unless you’re into that kind of thing… SF or KoF are great series to look at for examples. Keep your systems (relatively) simple, and let the different characters differentiate themselves.

Well thanks Mom lol. Anyhoo, I have learned alot from all of this and I just love it. Through the bickering I learned what are peoples likes and pet peeves (at least about games)are. This is still pretty good info that some are giving me. One day I would like to connect with some of you and play some 2D fighters (and get owned)I really appreciate the time you guys took to give me your two cents. Just keep it coming.

Well I’ve started a blog about my upcoming game project on the XBOX community games named Dead Plasma. Here I will show character art and other tidbits as they gather. Right now I just have an intro post added to the site. The two confirmed characters are almost done and will be posted in about three weeks. Right now the engine is being tweaked before I submit any gameplay vids. Thanks for your time and patience.

Hey, glad to see this is on track. Good luck.

That’s Eddy From Tekken.

Good luck on this, I hope this does good.
