I think this was needed,to let people know which games were revolutionary for the fighting game genre. For example, first game with the high/lo block system, first to incorporate throws, etc, with release dates and everything.
Battle Arena Toshinden was the 1st 3-D fighter with weapons.
Darkstalkers was the 1st fighter with air block.
Yie Ar Kung Fu was the 1st fighter with commands I think…or was it Karate Champ.
Fatal Fury 2 was the 1st fighter with back ground jumping.
Street Fighter CE was the 1st fighter to have same character choosing without a code.
SF WW was the 1st fighter to have a code lol. I’m not sure.
SF WW saved the arcades from doom for a decade.
MK was the 1st fighter with fatalities.
MK2 was the 1st fighter with friendships and babalitites.
Primal Rage was the 1st fighter where you could eat your followers.
That’s all from me I’m lazy.
Yeah, thats the type of stuff we need, just gotta polish it up,and the years and details.
We need more though, like the examples I put in my first post.
I think Warrior was the first fighting game. It was 1 on 1, vector graphics, overhead view and it was released in 1979.
Warrior was the 1st vs fighting (I mentioned that, and showed the klov link in another thread)…
Here’s a short list for 80’s fighting games:
[EDIT] Short list for 70’s and 80’s fighting games:
1) Knights in Armor (76) -
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t158/A-Gobin/Game%20pics/KnightsInArmor.jpg
Alright, it looks like this was the 1st vs fighting genre. And it looks like it uses 2 control sticks (ala Karate Champ…).
2) Boxing (77) - http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=757&page=1#2910
Looks like this was the 1st fighting game to use the top view angle, like Warrior.
3) Warrior (79) - http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=10408
1st vs fighting game. (my fault, the 3rd fighting game).
4) Karate (80) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karate_(Atari_2600)
It came out in 1980, I know the characters are nothing more then stick figures.
5) Karate Champ (84) - http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=8280
1st arcade vs side scrolling fighting game (my fault, 2nd after KiA).
6) Great Swordsman (84) - http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=8006
7) Yie Ar Kung-Fu (85) - http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=10513
1st fighting game to have multiple character designs?
8) Galactic Warriors (85) - http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=7880

9) Shanghai Kid (85) - http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9505
The 1st reactive fighting game, like Dragons Layer I’m guessing?.

11) International Karate (86) -

14) Hippodrome (89) - http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=8118
1st fighter to let your buy weapon etc…
15) Tongue of the Fatman (89) - http://www.mobygames.com/game/tongue-of-the-fatman/screenshots
You could actually buy items, health, magic and a few other things to help you in the fight.
16) Last Apostle Puppet Show (89) - http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=8385
Looks like this was the 1st fighting game to use stop motion?.
There might be a couple of more 80’s 1-vs-1 fighting games?..
Virtua Fighter - first 3D fighting game.
Holosseum. Need I say more lol
Barbarian had mid-match fatalities loooooong before mk used the idea.
Well I would say Street Fighter definetly put Fighting games on the map
it was just that damn good enough to make you cut school and go to arcades and play it
(Ever saw the scene in “Juice” lol?)
they actually made the whole combo thing noticed, I believe even in older fighting games in street fighter no matter how slow they were u could execute a combo, but when SSF came out it was just like “BAM!” the way the moves would connect and then the little combo message would appear
they made the whole special moves and power meter trend become more popular
The Marvel vs Capcom series (you know all of them)
just gave you so much to explore, the tag team moves, double/triple attacks that was just amazing, and better yet it was a video game franchise and a comic book franchise together
but others have had there impact
like others mention MK had the fatalities, maybe not first, but they made it famouse keep it real, Virtua Fighter which is probably my second fav fighting game was the first to go into 3D and have the ring outs.
Battle Arena Toshinden had the weapons and ish
I dont know if this is too “fighting game-related” but Chun-Li is maybe the first greatest female character on a videogame ever, because well… nobody knows that Samus was a woman in Metroid (and, you know, she is on an armor: TITS OR GTFO) and Valis/Athena/Momoko/younameit was too Japan-only.
Wasn’t KI the first game to have some sort of combo counter?
CCCCombo Breaker!!!
You are probably right. MK1 had Stage Fatalities too, what about Blood?
KI came after Super Turbo.
You never beat the game…did you?
Uh, I think he meant no one knew until they did beat the game.
I sure didn’t.
I have a couple
- Art of Fighting (Dec 11, 1992, Gamespot) was the first game to implement Energy gauges and Supers
- Samurai Shodown 2 (10-28-1994, Wikipedia) was the first game to implement a parry system (I’m not sure if it was also the first to include hops, ducking and rolls).
EDIT: corrected the date for SamSho 2
- arcana heart: first fighting game that didnt give a shit about character designs [other games to follow: blazblue etc]
What was the first game to have supers?
