Fighting Game Community - Your Thoughts On Standard Button Layouts (360 Edition)

I hate when they have diffenet layout’s for diffenet joysticks…I have all my PS1 Setup like this

^ [] L1
X O R1

Yeah MarkMan I’m glad I saw this thread.

Whatever you do, just make it so that I plug in the controller and I start doing this by default.

Punches: [Light] [Medium] [Heavy] [3P (or whatever I want)]
Kicks: [Light] [Medium] [Heavy] [3K (or whatever I want)]

It’s how it’s played in the arcade. So why deviate from that? Map the buttons so that it works like that.

i chose new layout, obviously the ex button mapping is terrible. and the hrap ex doesnt make that much more sense when it comes to the default 6 buttons.

I say, obviously, just make the preferred 6 buttons whatever layout that capcom is planning to default to on sf4 and hd remix. Whatever they are doing default, thats how I would want it.

I voted also for new layout,

On SFAC on the Xbox…There’s no L or R Button Config…

So playing it on the 360 screws up the buttons layout with the DOA4, VF5 and the SC4 Stick

Except that SFAC maps the black and white buttons’ functions to LT and RT, so those buttons are covered anyway.

thanks for the answer, I needed it here

so SFAC has that layout ?
X Y Bl L
A B Wh R
so on 360 BC ?>
X Y LT LB
A B RT RB

what about SFII on xbla ? is it>
X Y LT LB
A B RT RB
or ?
X Y LB LT
A B RB RT

Edit: a friend of mine just told me white and black where mapped on LB RB for JSRF, Panzer Dragoon, KOTOR, Ninja Gaiden…why is it different on SFAC ?

Actually, you got it backwards. SFAC’s default layout is:
X Y Wh/R
A B Bl/L

And LB and RB map to white and black on all BC games (not just the ones your friend mentioned), so on the 360 it goes like this:
X Y LB/RT
A B RB/LT

And that second layout is the correct one for XBLA HF.

thanks a lot for the clarifications ^^

so I’m gonna remap my HRAP EX to>
X Y LB LT
A B RB RT
then, it’s also almost perfect for SC4 as I’ll only need to have B(Kick) mapped on LB ^^ (I don’t I’m ever gonna use LT/RT as main buttons except for the old snk layout, so those could be in any order, I guess…)

I really wouldn’t care about whether the buttons work as default. I would be more concerned about being confused if the buttons are moved around. While fighting games let you change the button assignments for fights, they don’t let you change buttons used to navigate menus, and that’s why I think it’s important to keep at least the face buttons roughly like they are on the controller. Then, you won’t have to learn button positions differently for the menus and the Dashboard/XMB. For instance, say the game tells you (in a menu) to press A. On a pad, that’s the bottom button left of B, so if you change its position on a stick, you may press the wrong button.

So, if I had a 360 I would definitely choose something with

X Y
A B

The other two buttons wouldn’t be as important.

What would help is if Capcom could include a button layout in the options that is labeled for the “official” stick, like how Gran Turismo 5:P includes layouts for wheels. That could also kind of serve as advertising for the stick, as gamers fiddling with the options would see it and become aware of it.

I almost accidentally voted for the EX2 because I was about to vote before reading. Based on that and what other people have said, I can almost guarantee you that 99% of the people that voted for the EX2 voted based on its physical layout, not the button mappings.

It’s pretty obvious to me that the best setup would be:

X Y LB
A B RB

It just plain makes sense.

One more thing. I very strongly believe that the physical layout of the EX2 stick is perfect. There are only 6 face buttons. Those buttons are at the perfect space away from the stick and in the perfect arc. The extra buttons are all easily accessible for menu tasks, but are small and placed WAY up there at the top of the stick so that there’s zero chance of ever hitting them accidentally. In contrast, the Hori FS3 is a cramped mess. I would love to see the EX2 physical layout also become the new standard.

i voted for the ex2 layout because i play most games mainly with my index and middle fingers and the angle of the first set of 4 feel natural for it. the small spacing between the buttons and sticks on the hrap make it kind of difficult to play on the first set of buttons.

but whatever you do, don’t skimp on the rubber things on the bottom!

Just wanted to bump this thread from oblivion and say.

LOL!

YES.

Well I’m not too sure, I thought you meant more like the angles and physical layout of the buttons. But as far as buttons go, I own an EX2, and I don’t mind. I don’t get what the big dealio is about this every game I’ve played let me go into the options and remap the buttons, and my mind was always far from blown…

You probably haven’t tried to play UMK3 on XBLA with your EX2.

OK so now I’m totally confused.

The thread consensus seemed to be:
X Y LB LT
A B RB RT

So why did the SFIV sticks ship with:
X Y RB LB
A B RT LT

I know they are easy to move because of the quick disconnects but is there a reason for the layout?

(Sorry if this is discussed elsewhere but the search isn’t working.)

Thanks

That’s the default layout for the game.

Doh,

I should have thought about that. As you can tell I don’t have the game (SFIV) and I’m glad I don’t. I chose to get the stick now and the game later and I’m glad I did since I’ll be able to play plenty of other games with the stick, and the stick won’t be available forever but the game will.

Great job MarkMan, the stick (TE) came out great. I still prefer the layout described in this thread thou. I was thinking about switching them but then the art/labeling on the stick won’t match. :frowning:

Sorry for performing a ressurection, but here’s comment for the Xbox One era.

Even though the Xbox one has programmable controller reconfigurations using an app which alters the OS, despite how versatile it is, if the game you’re using does not have an internal game programming mode, then there is a game which still has a screw system depending on your button arrangements.

Using a PS2 to Xbox One adapter I could get these arrangements:. Street fighter 15th stick:

(Xbox Prime arrangement)
X Y Wh L
A B Bl R

PS2
Sq Tr R1 R2
X O R2 L2

Both of which are correct for Capcom games on the PS2 and Xbox Prime.

Using a PS2 to Xbox One adapter using “pad logic”:

X Y RB LB
A B RT LT

The Sega Genesis collection has only 2 default maps, one of which seem designed for pads and not sticks use:

Rew. FF
Z… C
. Y
X B
. A

This arrangement has Rew and FF as LT and RT.

All cross directions and digital buttons are interswappable with each other.

RT and RT can swapped with each other.

No button swaps are allowed between group A (cross+face+button) and Group B (the triggers.)

If my Street Fighter stick has:

X Y RB LB
A B RT LB

I have these possibilities marked in Os

O O O O
O O X X

How do I make “typical Genesis 6 button arrangement” (Sega modeled theirs after Capcom’s SF2) out of the above combination?

Microsoft said it’s impossible to get triggers and other buttons swapped.

I say Microsoft should have a “digital trigger mode” checkbox option, where the Xbox reads those triggers as 50% being the borderline. (Just read the grossest bit.)

(As an aside, I also have issues with no x-axis flipping of RS and the flipping of both axes on the LS, but that’s a separate issue.)
