Fighting Game Community - Your Thoughts On Standard Button Layouts (360 Edition)

I agree 100%.

To put it another way, I feel every 360 stick should be:
Jab: X
Strong: Y
Fierce: LB
Short: A
Forward: B
Roundhouse: RB

IF there are more buttons, then the LT/RT should go there, with LT above RT.

Reasons: This makes it work immediately with all Xbox BC fighters, SFT:HF, Ikaruga, TriggerHeart, all of the games that benefit from a stick.

whenever i mod a stick for 360 for someone its usually like this

x, y, lb, lt
a, b, rb, rt

whatever madcatz decides should correspond with whatever the sf4 game has as the default setting anyways so i’d check with capcom first instead of doing what the community wants and possibly finding out later its not even the same layout as the game.

I voted for the Hrap becuase I like the layout and feel of right hand side 6 buttons.

lol… if you only knew the whole story. lol.

Hit me up on irc later I’ll explain it better. I’m not an idiot, I’m putting a lot of thought into this. But with the SF IV controls aside from this. The ‘standard’ for fighting game controllers/arcade sticks on Xbox 360 REALLY does need to change. That is the main point I’m trying to get across and seeing if people agree that way.

The question I have is, what’s the default layout right now for SFIV? Or has Capcom let you guys know? OR are you guys driving that detail?

But in either case, it seems that this:

X Y LB
A B RB

seems to be the prevailing concept.

i agree. I dont necessarily mind having to change the button layout for SFIV if i have to but i rather not. I doesnt matter though because it saves it anyway.

No comment on the SF IV stuff. But this isn’t about only SF IV. By using something universal like…

X Y LB
A B RB

Don’t you think that will be better compatible for ALL fighters/games that use the 360 controller?

I think it is the best overall control setup and finally you can play UMK3 without going crazy.

lol.

oh shit, i’m real sorry about that mark man

but i think the ideal layout would be

X Y LB
A B RB

so i guess i should’ve voted for new layout

Any particular reason why triggers instead of bumpers? Bumpers are digital and easier to hack; if the ‘standard’ ended up being triggers instead, then those hacking pads for 6 button sticks would have a rougher time of things.

This is exactly how my custom stick is set up for the 360.

It works well. The four face buttons are not in a stupid position like the Hori EX2.

New layout, and like everybody else, I agree it’s got to be
X Y LB
A B RB

(Plus, that’s the default layout for SF2 Turbo on XBLA. Two birds, one stone!)

I think UMK3 is a special case, only because of the star diagram. Playing UMK3 on emulators has left me in confused about what is proper on my HRAP2…

So far I think:

HP HK BL
LP LK RN

is what I’ve got. But I’m not sure if that works for everyone else.

oh my bad, i was under the assumtion that the pcb would just have button inputs, bumbers it is i’ll edit that

I agree on this also and have the same setup for my custom stick. It’s just a lot more convenient for most fighters since I really can’t think of any game that uses the L or R buttons for basic punch and kick moves on default.

Quite afew things wrong here but I will start with my “opinion.” I say it does not matter because honestly it doesn’t as long as the buttons are not completely dumb like:
RB X LT LB
A B Y RT

The only reason I listed that dislike about the bumpers and triggers is because triggers atleast being displayed on the computer use a axis or something, really I forget but pressing both should not register because both triggers pressed is the same as if it was at rest. HOWEVER I have never encountered a program or xbox game that has a problem with this it is just a fear. But like I said it hasn’t happened so it probably won’t. Even then higher quality sticks like HRAPs make it really easy to just redo the buttons yourself.

Another problem there is not universal layout that will cover every game. I understand you can cover most of the games with a single layout but if you buy one of the fighting sticks for 360, well they made it assuming your going to use it with that game. So to bad for you if you expect it to come perfect for SF3, when the stick was made for DOA4, VF5, or SC4. Like I said before with a HRAP you can generally fix this if you wanted to easly. Also most capcom games use the standard layout of:
LP(X) MP(Y) HP(LB)
LK(A) MK(B) HK(RB)

Now alot of other fighitng games use a layouts like:
A B C
D – E

K S HS
P – D

Now when trying to come up with a “Universal” it is flat out impossible because most of those buttons would be on something like ABXY which would screw up the “Universal/Capcom” button schemes your trying to come up with. I am not even going to bother with NeoGeo and I know alot of those games are not on 360 yet but if they did your “Universal” control scheme would mean nothing.

As far as the whole DOA thing is concerned I quit DOA years ago, I only keep the name because idiots on forums love to go off on flame sprees just because they are to close minded about fighting games/video games and it wouldn’t suprise me if that also applied to the world. I will change my sig so random posts like yours about DOA can be avoided from now on.

Well the thing is.

If you use the VF5 Hori EX2 or SC IV EX2. The button layout is NOT plug and play with those games. You still have to remap them in order to play them as the game was ‘intended’… that is the main point I’m trying to get across.

I’m 100% sure that more people play these games using the standard 360 controller… only people like us on SRK and others who prefer arcade stick will actually use one. So if you were looking to buy an arcade stick wouldn’t you think it was odd that the button layout was something completely foreign to you for an arcade stick that is advertised as a stick for said ‘official’ game?

Also the DOA comment wasn’t directly towards you… lol. It wasn’t a random post either, it was a sincere post that warranted a sincere answer, not something random about your post/nick history.

X Y LB
A B RB

This is my vote too. It’s really awesome to see MarkMan asking about even little shit like this.

I’m taking this opportunity to mention that I noticed–if all involved teams continue on with their normal layouts–there’s a very good chance that the defaults will not be the same either between PS3 and 360, or SF4 and SFHD. I wrote a huge gay post about it here if anyone’s interested.

Honestly I will agree most 3d fighter players use pad, and like you said people who prefer stick which mostly seems to apply to people who play alot of 2d fighters as well do use it. I do remember when I did play DOA afew people bought the stick simply because the 360 pad sucks. I also didn’t know the VF and SC sticks didn’t auto remap the buttons, you would think DOA4 could do it why not them. Anyway I still think it is pointless because what your looking for/what most people want is a fighting stick layout for SF/SFish games. It does make the most sense but you still have to map buttons on alot of games, which is why I don’t care/say it doesn’t matter.

I vote for:

X Y LB
A B RB

If we go with…

X Y LB XX
A B RB XX

What games can’t be played using the software’s default layout?

Now. Put that list up versus a list of games that can’t be played using the software’s default layout for the DOA4/VF5/SCIV Hori EX 2 stick.

I’ll make it easy. Here are the three games that can be played out the box with the EX2.

Dead or Alive 4 (360)
Dead or Alive 3 (Xbox) *
Dead or Alive 2U (Xbox) *

*via backwards compatibility

That would mean EVERYTHING else needs to have buttons changed around.
