Fighting game cliches

Did he? O_o I played only second game with awakened Kaede who used lightning…
Speaking of hydro characters, who else can you remember? There are very few to my knowledge: water ninja from Samurai Showdown and his demonic character-clone, old fisherman from Last Blade, Rain from Mortal Kombat, Rikuo from Darkstalkers… That’s it pretty much.
Compare to crapload of fire- and explosion-based characters >_>

does colossus from x-men count?

So the difference between this thread and the other one is that the premise here is the actual games and not so much the characters. Aight then…

  • Green-tinted lifebars; Yellow used to be the standard.
  • More Japanese characters than any other ethnicity.
  • Perfectly acceptable to have no black, indian, hispanic or native american characters in a fighting game.
  • Power gauge for super OMG-that’s-so-badass attacks.
  • Vs Mode Handicap. Don’t know why this is needed.
  • Arcade Mode, even when the game’s never been in the arcade.
  • Alternate version of an existing character that uses a different slot.
  • Back dashes.
  • Juggling.
  • Trials.
  • Guest characters. Maybe not so much now, but developers are starting to see the money in them.

Yeah, in LB1, he used water. There’s even a code in LB2 that allows you to play his LB1 version.

It makes sense that so many use fire, though. It’s a symbol of destruction. Water is a symbol of life.

No offense but I really hate your avatar. I think that was drawn by Falcoon but I can’t be sure. There’s a lot of great art of Gato and that’s probably one of the worst ones and it shocked me that it was official art. It looks like a Rob Leifeld drawing where the body is huge but the head is wildly out of proportion. Gato looks like a pinhead in that drawing.

Sorry for off topic.

Fighting games are built on stereotypes hope this helps

here is the plot of nearly every fighting game: the main character, trying to become the very best like no one ever was, joins a mysterious world class fighting tournament that has no real regulations on who enters with what powers or weapons that is run by a shady organization that enjoys brainwashing, ruling a corporation/country, and runs an evil science laboratory. They are led by an someone with super awesome powers who wants to TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!

VS mode handicap is good for playing people who aren’t in your skill level

Why it should be unacceptable? O_o

Hmmm… Maybe you’re right actually. Let’s see if I’ll cut something better.

Yeah, this is good one =]
Most amusing part is that in SF you have all this but guess what - main character don’t give a shit about that organization. So Guile and Chun-Li should blow up Shadaloo again… and again lol.
That’s one of the reason I wait for SG actually - it seems to discard great amount of cliches in story, characters, gameplay and engine departments… Although there is evil science laboratory (but it fights against greater evil so to speak), country ruler (but she’s actually good… kinda) and brainwashing (one character is being completely under control of spooky psychic).

Yea the only obvious cliches in that game is huge titties and a cat girl…but im fuckin homo-sexually biased for that game so i don give a fuck!!

Ahh…

  • Schoolgirl/Flapper (Filia+Samson)
  • Movie Star/Flapper (Cerebella)
  • “Oujo-Sama”/ Mistress (Parasoul, complete with competent henchmen that double as soldiers and fanboys)
  • The Fool (Mr.Fortune, triple threat with also being its brother roles, the Trickster and The Thief)
  • Just a gigantic cluster of Prohibition era cartoon cliches (Peacock)
    et cetera
They don’t discard them, their ones are just culturally outdated in real life.

But it also (will) have huge muscular masculine manly menZ so it’s even ^_____________^
And yeah, that catgirl is nothing like your average catgirl (despite me know nothing about what “right” catgirl should look like =])

Well, okay you got me. They didn’t discard them (in terms of characters and story). They laughing at them. In most cases it’s actually a parody. When you see characters taking those cliches up to eleven instead of playing straight you can’t really take them seriously. What’s up with soldier you can command to literally take shot for you? Or dropping pianos? Or punching coal into diamond?

Well, why shouldn’t it be?

Maybe so, if I was playing my little cousin or something. In that case, It would probably be better to show him how to play and let him get free damage learning combos than to butcher my lifebar, preventing him from learning any devastating bnbs because my vitality is at %20.

Because there isn’t any good reason. You said it like it was something bad without any reasoning. If you see any problems with it you should explain your point, aren’t you? O_o

But that’s exactly playing them straight in the age Skullgirls itself in, right down to Parasoul looking like a long lost sister to MGM’s and Warner Bros’ harlot and female spy designs. Everyone was so focused on satire that satires themselves turned into cliches.
You can’t go an anime season or Looney Toons collection without someone hamming up those exact kind of scenarios.
I’m surprised anyone doesn’t know the accidental piano drop gag.

I know it’s a gag. Peacock is doing it with her powers. And after that (at least story wise) people are you know dying. Like for real. It’s not cartoon violence. For SG universe it’s a real violence coming from little psychotic girl killing people with cartoonish stuff. I’d bet it’s not very slapstick funny for those who witness such piano drop IRL. It’ll be really creepy for them. And Peacock doing it for lols. Because she knows that piano gag too haha. I think it’s not quite the same thing that Buggs Bunny does >_>

I never said it was a problem though; I just mentioned that people are ok with it. Whether someone thinks it’s an issue or not is subjective; some do and some don’t. Either way, it’s still a fighting game cliche.

But slapstick is exactly that to a point. Scot-Free Dark Comedy as long as it stays comedy.
Marvin The Martian gets vaporized when we don’t know what it does? Funny.
When Bugs risks it without knowing how to be reassembled? OH FUCK.
I’m not even saying that’s a bad thing, just that its only original because its before our generation.

EDIT: Heck, cliches aren’t bad things, everything is one if you’re informed enough.

He-he can’t really argue with that. And cliches being before our generation thing is good IMO. Because devs using stuff they love instead of stuff that popular right now to cater for audience or just because they doesn’t want to invent their own.

Culturally outdated is just another term for “classic.”
