Just a warning about the netplay though, it’s only good for short distances and low pings. Basically I only play it against people on the East Coast, personally. It’s works great for low ms, but it’s horrible for long distances.

Huh, I never even thought of trying to take Versus mode seriously in that game. It kind of looks like those arcade Gundam games or maybe the Virtual-On series. I suppose these aren’t very “shmuppy” though. They’re definitely arcade-style games to me, but they’re also certainly a step closer towards “mech sim” games (like Armored Core and Mech Warrior) than they are to shmups or fighters.

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Shred Nebula yet! It’s made by the guys who created SF2T/SF2HF. Recently released and looking very cool. There were two threads about it:

By the looks of it, though, it’s probably more akin to a competitive shooter game like SubSpace than any actual fighter-shmup hybrid.

I thought I was the only one who cared about Fighter Shmups. Subscribed. Also, for anyone who’s interested, Twinkle Star Sprites is one of Gametap’s free games. I’ve got it there, and my user name is the same as it is here.

I thiiiink that the latter is a sequel to the former. They’re both fighters but they’re so heavily projectile-based that they end up looking very shmuppy to me. The look is super-anime-loli but gameplay seems unique and interesting. I’ve been meaning to try them out for a while.
