Fight game communities

I was interested in KoF, but it seems the online activity isn’t doing so well. At least for consoles. Is that right? I have the demo and I like it a lot, but there is no one to play with so I can get a better experience. I’d be willing to learn the bigger combos. I’d have to with whatever game I choose to eventually be any good. Is KOF 98 active or a ghost town?

What is GGPO and Supercade?

Side note:
I actually love Smash and won two tournaments in my day and I love Megaman, but getting a WiiU and that game for mainly that character when it comes out would be dumb of me. Curse these prices and economy.

You have all been so awesome helping me find my niche in fighting games. I’m very thankful.

if you can use ggpo supercade, than your set in that regards as most game game have active community and netplay is clearly better than anything console wise. but you will need to know port forwarding.

If you enjoy 2D fighters, definitely learn how to use GGPO and Supercade, as well as port forwarding.

KOF 13 is great, though I think it might be more of a hassle to get a wireless controller working than a wired controller but don’t take my word on it.

You seem really picky about what game you want to play - are you sure you’re not just bad at the games you’ve tried and didn’t like?

Jokes aside, you should re consider Street Fighter 4. Probably one of the most active games right now and with Ultra releasing its gonna be great. Its 3D models but plays like a 2D fighter so I’m sure you can get used to it.

Also, I’m curious as to how you were able to afford a PS3 but not able to splurge a bit of money for a few games…

I looked up GGPO, Supercade and port forwarding. I’m not sure I understand it but it’s all PC gaming emulation stuff right? It seems complicated and will take time for me to set up especially since I’m not a PC gamer, but I think I found a good site to help me. Then I have to figure out how to hook up a controller which I have no clue and searching yields sketchy results. Idk, I don’t want to break anything. I’m not that great with computer things that aren’t plug and play. Eventually, I can do it; I’m just partial to physical discs or cartridges for simplicity.

You play KOF13 on PC then? How is that and the community? Is it tough to get into many matches?

Wired controller? Like a special PC controller? Again I don’t have a lot to spend yet. If a simple PS3 controller will work pretty good than that’s what I can do otherwise I have to wait until I can afford a recommended PC controller. I’m poor and it’s sad, but I have to deal with it.

I’m picky because I’m limited and I just want to make the right choice for me. I work and go to school and a bunch of other things that are legit important for me to get done so time and money are scarce.

I have had a decent amount of fighting game experience when I was a bit younger and I’ve been playing and breaking down games all my life, so I have a decent eye. I think that I’m slightly above average. I really try to give a game a legitimate chance and spend a fair amount of time with it. When I complain, the game just isn’t for me and not a true sleight against the game or anyone who likes it.

I am reconsidering SF4, but which version. I’ve been recommended Super Street Fighter 4 and not Arcade Edition because of balancing stuff and netcode.

It looks like I am deciding between that or Blazblu or waiting for the new Guilty Gear. I have a friend visiting this weekend so maybe we’ll pick one out together.

I got a PS3 years ago man. Times change. I’m lucky to have it. I had more money back then, cheaper expenses, less of them in general etc. Point being I’m just trying to find my niche fighting game to enjoy. It looks like it will be one of those 3 or if persona gets strongly endorsed.

Someone recommended you Super Street Fighter 4? No, go for the most recent version in fighting games because no one will be playing old versions, AE is the one that everyone is on. Same with Blazblue, if you want to play that then you should just wait a month for when the newest version (Chrono Phantasma) comes out. And by the new Guilty Gear do you mean Xrd? That’s not coming out on consoles for a while and especially not in the west for at least a year.

Yeah, I’ve seen a few reviews too that say get SSF4 instead of AE. It sounded like that I could play with them regardless of edition. So if I get Super SF4 that means I couldn’t play with most people or people with AE?

I failed to account for when these titles came out and how long they’ve been in circulation.

Yes I meant Xrd. I thought it was slated to be soon. Whoops. Thanks for the correction.

I’ve seen more bad reviews for SF than I have for Blazblue so I’m leaning more towards that. Do you think Chrono Phantasma will get an “update” soon after? I don’t want to save for CP if it just gets replaced a short time later.

On wikipedia, it seems they come out with one per year. Is that normal? I don’t know much about that company and their policy on releases.

AE is the newest version of SF4, it’s the one everybody plays. There’s no point in buying an old version after a game has been updated.

BlazBlue tends to be about 1 1/2 years between versions, I think. There’s a free balance patch coming out for CP, but other than that, no new version is planned at this time. Considering ArcSys is working on so many other games right now, it might be a long time before we see CP2.

Yeah what Celerity said, always go for the most recent release because no one will be playing on Super.

And honestly I wouldn’t read/watch most reviews on fighting games because a lot of them are just by people who only play story mode or mash buttons with their friends for a few days then they’re done with the game. I think watching a few tournament matches then seeing which looks more interesting would be better.

not true about super, when I go into lobbies there will be folks playing both, BUT everywhere I see SSF4 and AE costs the same so just get AE. Gamestop has is used for less than $20

Cool, I guess I had the wrong impression. I thought that people who had different copies could still play together if they used the basics. I did watch a few Evos to help make my decisions.

Thanks a lot guys. You have all really helped me out. I’ve learned a lot about fighting games and I think I found my niche.

I’ll be saving to get the new BlazBlue when it comes out in March. I have a friend visiting this weekend and maybe we can pick up SF AE or TTT2 together to try it out if I can find it for 20 or less. I got a tip from a coworker for a particularly hard day so I have an extra 10 bucks to spend which helps quite a bit.

I’ll connect with you again Celerity if you’re still willing to have that Skype session then.

@normalguycap Hey, just wondering did you not try persona because of the 4 in the title, because Persona 4 Arena is the first persona fighter and plays similar to blazblue since you like that, if you do want to play with me, I have a PS3 and my PSN ID is AlmazvonMao if you ever feel like playing online and just so you know I am from south Florida so sorry if there is lots of lag, hope to see you online someday.

Oh I would love to try Persona! It does seem appealing and yes I know the similarities between it and BlazBlue.

I just don’t have the game and there are no demos. I could only pick one fighter and to me it seemed like Persona 4 may be slowing down in activity. With the advice I got, I figured I would get more mileage out of the other games. I have nothing against P4A.

The games are so cheap now since they have been out for a while, no reason you cant get a new game every few weeks. If you look you may find there is an established scene in your area. Even if your scene is just a casual scene without lots of tournaments, you can always show up and run $2 buy in tournaments and have fun on a smaller scale. Even if your tourny only has 10-16 people it is still a blast and gives people a reason to want to level up, esp if you record the matches for everyone to watch later  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEpFvJjE_XU#t=149

And you can buy a digital copy of AE for less than $10 now on xbl

@normalguycap well, yeah, forgot P4A2 was coming out soon sorry, but glad to see you’re finding a game and again, hope to see you online

Well, the store I went to only had one fighting game and that was Super Street Fighter 4 for 13 dollars. I’m going to return it soon. I didn’t have trouble getting online, but what was irritating was how it played.

I started out in practice. I chose Guy, went through his moveset and normals and then went into trials. I hate Capcom’s barebones approach to training. I could not complete trials for any character. What follows is my experience which was mostly negative so I’m sorry if it sounds like I’m bashing a game you like, but I am a bit angry.

To preface, I completed all trials with every character in Marvel vs Capcom 3. I think we can agree that those are harder and much more complex than SF4. SF4 is very restrictive on movement and button input in comparison. I think I’m pressing the buttons too fast so the timing is all wrong.

What I found difficult was that there was no indication on when to input moves for their desired effect. Even a simply trial like crouch punch into standing punch was hard and yet I completed a later trial that had 5 input and ended in a super.

For that one small combo, I tried every type of button press. I buffered it everyway I could and even mashed it and the combo still didn’t connect. There is nothing to teach me the proper timing I need to press these things and I don’t believe doing trials is accurate because the computer blocks better than any human player could, but I don’t know how I can overcome this block or improve myself when nothing connects no matter how I press the buttons. Even when practicing and doing the same thing each time, it seems to drop my input anyway. I have the input display on so I know I’m pressing them right.

I don’t know. I’m just very displeased with Street Fighter today.

When practicing a focus attack combo, I was clearly hitting the training dummy. There were being juggled and my hand goes right through them doing nothing. This is repeatable and one of the trials too, but there is no way to figure it out unless I look online at someone doing the trials themselves, but still. I find this a bit ridiculous.

I am highly awaiting the new Blazblue. I think I will enjoy that immensely. Sprites , I think, are much better than 3D models.

Played it a bit longer. Yeah, Street Fighter is not for me. I have more fun with Third Strike. Hell, I’d go back to MvC3 over this. I have a new appreciation for Tekken now too. I hope I can find that game at the next store I go to tide me over for BlazBlu and eventually GGXrd.

Does anyone play DOA or VF? I’m curious about those games, but the learning curve for the DOA I played was ridiculously steep.

That’s because a lot of combos in Street Fighter are timing based links and not chain combos like Marvel 3, doing combos in Street Fighter most of the time is harder than Marvel 3 combos IMO. The computer in trial mode is on auto-block too so any dropped combo that you do will get blocked also, and a human player could definitely block like that. Also the character trials are ass and don’t teach you at all about your practical combos in the game, I don’t really know if I would return a game over not being able to do some of those impracticable combos and especially when you’re starting the game off as using Guy, I mean it’s not like he’s top tier now but in Super he was even worse than he is now.
